In this video I remove the expansion tank to clean it and I end up discovering that it cant be cleaned properly but also that the floater inside the tank isnt working properly and therefore causing a the low coolant message in the car.
9 times out of 10 the foam in the expansion tank is caused by the oil cooler under the exhaust manifold. Replacing the seals will fix it. However, it can also be caused by the head gasket blown. A TK (block ) test will sense exhaust gasses at the expansion tank and tell you where your luck lays.
In my Astra J, there is little plastic drain tap (finger operated!) at the bottom, driver side of the radiator. You can slip a tube (about little finger in diameter) over the tap outlet to collect the coolant in a container. Don't do this when the engine is still hot! Leave at least 30 mins or more before doing this and crack the coolant tank lid open to relieve any residual pressure in the system. I've got mousse or mayonnaise in my coolant bottle as well. Is this a common Astra J fault?
I order the part and it was the wrong bit because the one they send didn't have a floater inside, so i sent it back and asked them to send me the correct one. ill update you on that.
@@DaringBeefcake -can you help me. I have a problem with coolant bottle or sensor. The bottle is properly full, but on shows message"Coolant level is low...etc". I already replaced the old sensor but message still exist.Do I need to replace the bottle?!
@@milosmirovix9753 In my case I had to replace the bottle as the magnet inside the bottle was somehow not floating, also make sure that if you buy a new expansion tank it has the magnet inside otherwise you will keep having the same issue as some tanks dont come with the magnet.
@@DaringBeefcake -for the first time I heard for "magnet" in the bottle!?!! Thank you, before I buy I'll ask guy in a store for that! Like I said I changed sensor in the bottle and still notification exists on the screen.
Sure thanks for the comment, so I should clarify just in case and to let everyone know the vid is not for flashing or draining the coolant, this video it’s only for changing the expansion tank for the coolant. Thanks.
Hi well the way I do it is basically after having replaced the part that you need to change and lost the coolant, I fill the system with coolant all the way till the max mark on the expansion tank, then start the car and run it until you have hot air coming out of the vents inside the car, the coolant lead is open while I do that, and also while the car is running i check if the coolant is going down and top it up if needed, keep running the car until the radiator fan comes on and runs its cycle, keep checking the level of coolant its important as well as the coolant gauge making sure it does not overheat. If you put to much coolant it can overflow as the cap is not on, but be careful as it can be extremely hot and cause burns once the coolant fan goes off and you have nice hot air inside the car, switch off the car, check the level top up if needed, then put the cap on and test drive. make sure no overheating as that would mean air in the system and can be damaging to ur engine. check the coolant the day after to make sure is at its correct level. hope this helps.
