VCHA has finally made their debut and their newest songs have shifted my impressions of the group. This video was delayed and does not contain my feelings about their second single, 'Only One'. However, I do talk extensively about 'Girls of the Year', their debut single and the b-side, 'XO Call Me'.

This video was recorded before Only One was released, so my thoughts about it are missing from this video. Loved the song and found it to be really catchy, but the b-side they released alongside it was not great. Despite the video coming out later than I anticipated, everything I mention still holds true for VCHA even after the release of 'Only One'. Also, I did hear about Kaylee going on indefinite hiatus, so I hope VCHA takes some time off for her to be healthy before releasing their next song.

Weird... I like the b-side better than the single and I've been pretty critical of their more kids boppy music. For instance, I can't stand "know me like that." I love favorite girl and as a music major with a BFA, it's definitely their most musically compelling song. The consistent use of major 4ths for harmony, almost more of a counter melody, in the pre-chorus followed by the voices doing a key change before the music does, and then the music catching up. I'm actually obsessed. (Edit for correction cause this comment made me dig deeper: there is no key change, just a wicked chord resolutions and some absolutely crunchy accidentals.)

@@boopscrootles6786Aren’t songs like Know Me Like That, Go Getter, Y.O.Universe, etc just for practice? I feel like those songs kinda show u what they can do as a group u know like with their voices and it really shows off their dancing skills to.

I didn't like XO Call Me that much as a song, but I agree that the concept was way more in line with what I'd hoped to see from VCHA since the beginning! Just a bunch of girls recording themselves having fun in California. The way it was shot felt raw, relatable, and nostalgic. It gave me a lot of the same vibes as NewJeans, and half the reason I like NewJeans is because of their concept. I definitely agree about the Disney / Kidsbop vibe though. I listen to their music because I've been watching them since A2K and at this point I'm already invested in the girl's journey. Even though I like many of their songs, their sound overall has been an acquired taste for me. I know that many of my friends / peers probably wouldn't like it -- they'd hear the lyrics and see the music videos and get the same "childish" vibe, but then again we (myself and my friends) probably aren't the target audience for this group. However, many American viewers from VCHA's predebut days said that this sort of concept for the girls would struggle to attract American fans. It's also why a lot of people were against Kaylee's inclusion in the group at first -- because it would force VCHA to have a juvenile concept for a few years until she grew up. I still think this analysis still holds true. So I wouldn't be surprised if the girls didn't start to get more popular until after they've matured their sound / image a bit -- if they ever do. Either that or they'll end up becoming a lot more popular with a demographic that isn't American. Honestly, I think if they'd committed to a concept similar to NewJeans to capitalize on the nostalgia market or something like Blackpink to capitalize on that girl-power feel, Americans would probably eat it up. Girl Crush may be on its way out in current kpop trends, but non k-pop listeners probably aren't done with it. I completely agree that the lyrics in many of the songs feel like they lack substance, which is what contributes to the generic / kidsbop feel. The music can still be fun to listen to if you don't think about it too much though. Like, Girls of the Year and Only One are catchy, regardless of the lyrics imo. Anyway, this will be very interesting to watch unfold, especially once Katseye debuts. I mention them because they're basically setting themselves up to be the big-girl alternative to VCHA. I lowkey feel like katseye will have more mainstream appeal, but we'll see!

Yeah katseye will probally be "american le sserafim" with bolder concept then just cute. I find interesting to contrast vcha with babymonster that shows a lot of american music influence, but still kpop, and vcha an american group but with cute kpop basic sounds.

yes! i really hope they lean into the newjeans aesthetic but with the sound of only one and xo call me, a mix of y2k with funky beats. i’ve followed them since a2k has been announced, and i genuinely think that going in the direction of a group of girls having fun making music and working hard. similar to newjeans, goty’s music video had that aspect to it. if they lean into less cringey lyrics and concepts, and more into a pink pantress sound (but obviously a more pg-pg13 version), i think they would really make it big.

i dont know how a r&B sound would work for their target demographic. I am not american. R&B for me is very nostagic from the 2010 to 1990, so for their target audiece born in 2000 to 2014 may sound a bit old fashion?@@ragsleramen

Greetings! And thank you for this essay on VCHA! I was actually surprised that you hit many points that I agree with! From my point of view, the lyrics are a somewhat disappointing area, preventing me from outright enjoying humming along to "Girls of the Year", for example. In the music video, he moment where we see Camila looking at herself onstage do look like the hardest-hittig moment indeed. But as the MV set production design, you compared their debut MV to TWICE's and ITZY's, but I think a better comparison would have been with NiziU's debut videos since NiziU's a newer grou, and also comes from an almost identical survival show format, while also having the same "goal" for JYPE to expand the company in another market (Japan, in their case). There moving to LA was always the plan, though. so it didn't comes as any surprise to me. Not only it was told in early press releases about "A2K", but it's also the case that NiziU is based in Japan for their activities. NiziU often goes back to Korea (more so since their "Press Play" album since it was to be their Korean Debut) for different promotional activities. So yeah, it indeed makes sense to not keep them in Seoul for their career! :) And it worked with NiziU! They're definitely a top-tier girl group over there (along TWICE, which has such a huge influence over there still). But as far as VCHA's goes, in the back of my mind I always have the thought that they just won't be able to pierce the American market and have success. Even with all the effort of JYPE and Republic so far, I still see their appeal to only previous JYP company fans, or some other kpop fans but the mainstream is way too saturated and fragmented. I'm open that I'm actually totally wrong, though since I do wish for their success! :) A "blow out" moment would be what they need, like you mentioned. Hm, maybe it's okay to not have it just yet and let them build their core fanbase... I'm always looking for more VCHA content and seeing this essay video makes me realize how much you've been hunting these VCHA clips and articles too! :) So, you may have already heard that Kaylee went in an indeterminate hiatus a few days ago due to a health condition. I'm only hoping she gets healthy enough to rejoin the group's activities soon, of course! Thank you again for this video! It's okay if you released it later than you were expecting, it's obvious it took a lot of work to make. Have a great day!!

About your comment on Vcha being the first JYP girl group to reside outside of Korea. You made a comment saying that you weren't sure. Since NiziU resides in Japan, I woulòd say that NiziU is the first JYP girl group to reside outside of Korea with Vcha being second.

The one thing that I tend to not agree with (when it comes to everyone, not just this video), is when they're called Disney or Kidzbop like bc....that's a lot of kpop and that's a of kpop songs that blow up imo. OR maybe, I just feel like from a reviewer's point of view, I'm a neglected market that's not thought about. I didn't see the first video but SeVit ( the predebut songs ) is my morning walk to my job work-out list. Know Me Like That, it's just a sassy, brat pop type of song that makes me feel good and like a badass in the mornings. All of that to say, I disagree about the sound thing because I like the sound (as in I think it sounds good, it's fun music) and I guess, I also mind a Disney sound. XO Call Me is really good but I would prefer that they don't go in that direction as a main focus for a comeback until Kaylee is older. I think that direction of a more mature sound should wait and if they want to mature, go in the direction of KMLT. The sound isn't as bright or poppy, allows them to be more mature. But it also seems like Kaylee has less in songs overall and I wonder if they're giving her smaller bits because of her age, as to not put too much on her because she is the 3rd best vocalist of the group. I agree overall on the lyrics, GOTY 'we' line wasn't bad to me but I do feel like the lines are a little clunky sometimes/the overall flow. The message is good but I fee like there is a way to capture that better. But I'm also not a lyricist so what do I know? MV: I fully agree with the MV, it was fine but I also expected more? The concept was there and I think it was a missed chance for a story-line based music video given the message of the song. I still think they could've gone with the seeing themselves in the crowd route at the end but let the build up be, the girls handing out flyers for their first concert, going on auditions together and failing or something along those lines. The song includes the line like "you'd never thought we'd be." So, show us people doubting that they'd hit big. Based on this, I think you might enjoy Only One more and not like Favorite Girl but it's a bop to me. Cool video.

I didn't see the first video, but the VCHA pre-debut songs were just songs from the show minus Y.O.Universe. So they should have been "generic" to see what direction the group would take, and it was nice getting OT6 versions of the songs from the show. But anywho, so far, I'm loving everything about VCHA. Everything has been age-appropriate and fun. It's ok for teens to do teen songs.

i think you mean Ready For The World, which was just the show's theme song, Y.O.Universe was actually the final mission song on A2K, so their predebut songs, Y.O.Universe, Go Getter and Know Me Like That were performed on the show

Nice perspective. I also wish for more meanifull lyrics / relatable for their younger target audience. Like finding their selfs, growing. Maybe expand beyound the 100% cheerfull all song long and in all song. Have emotional e melodic contrast. But I am glad that they are improoving a lot in skills. They are like twice junior, as in similar concepts, but is need some deep.

For me, to get more attention is to give them music or songs that fit their looks. They releases are a girl pop concept when they look too mature for that. they don't fit the basic kpop gg concept but they were given songs for intended for a kpop group. Give them mature or serious (not sexy, there is a difference) image and sound and it will hit.

I completely disagree with this. These girls look like teenagers and their girl pop sound and styling fits them well. hell most teens wear clothes that are too mature for them, making them look older than they are. Their clothes actually fit their ages.
