This video is an introduction to vectors and vector geometry. It appears mainly in the Higher GCSE maths paper although the simpler parts of it do come up in the foundation paper as well so it's worth everyone being familiar with at least the first part of this video or if you are already familiar it's worth revising as part of your GCSE revision.
The video goes through a few different elements that are likely to come up in a GCSE exam and gives you a chance to practice a couple of questions yourself.
I hope you find it useful - if you have any questions, comments or suggestion for and videos let me know in the comments section below.
Thanks for watching!
James :-)

Thanks, it's a really helpful video. It would be even better, if you turned the music down a bit, as hearing what you are saying is more important when trying to learn these sorts of things than having some random music playing. This is especially true, when it's 3am and you're trying to watch it, without waking everyone else in the house up.

Now this is where the ambiguity appears as far as I am concerned. At 1.51 you show vector -b in the same position as vector b, why is that ? Why is it not shown starting at o and then extending the same length in the same direction as -b , but from point o ?
@MathsKitchen
@MathsKitchen 4 года назад
vector b takes you from O to B (must be in that direction) the notation that we use to describe a journey in the opposite direction, from B to O, is -b. The negative part is just telling you that it goes in the opposite direction to the small arrow. Does that help?
@isobar5857
@isobar5857 4 года назад
@@MathsKitchen. Most grateful for your reply. Still confused somewhat, in the following sense. If I have a vector [ A ] whose tail is at some position, say, x, y and has a magnitude of say, M, then the tail of - [ A ] should start at x, y and have length [ magnitude M] in the opposite direction. This what is confusing, as far as I am concerned. Do you see what I mean? Further clarification would be most welcome.
@MathsKitchen
@MathsKitchen 4 года назад
I think I see what you're saying, your thinking of it like it is being rotated 180 degrees around (x,y)? I can see the logic of the that but the reality is more like it's rotating 180 degrees around the midpoint of the line.
@isobar5857
@isobar5857 4 года назад
@@MathsKitchen . Thanks again for your reply. I believe the confusion lies in the notation. As an example, if you have a vector A of magnitude 2 say, lying on the positive x axis and starting at the origin [ 0,0 ] then -A would be vector of magnitude 2 , lying on the x axis 2 units in length from the origin in the negative direction...if you see what I mean.

The train analogy seems to completely fall apart when you're going to point P. There appears to be no logic to the fact that OP is 1/2a + 1/2b! So I guess you just have to trust the calculation.
