In this segment, we discuss recent developments in Eswatini, the last remaining absolute monarchy in Africa, where King Mswati III has ruled with impunity for a generation. This tiny, landlocked kingdom rarely makes headline news - and for those who are not aware, it is probably the worst dictatorship you’ve never heard of. As one example, among many, just this week, two former members of the country’s parliament were sentenced to decades in prison after being found guilty, in a sham trial, for “inciting unrest” during pro-democracy demonstrations three years ago. Before being sentenced this week, the two men had already spent three years behind bars in utterly deplorable conditions.
This pattern of abuse might seem unthinkable, too callous to be true. But it is not. Helping to shed some necessary light on this latest injustice in Eswatini, as well as some broader context, are two exemplary activists: Velaphi Mamba, a well-known Swazi activist who has been leading the charge for democratic change in Eswatini for many years, and Mary Pais, a Swazi attorney and co-director of the African Initiative of Women Human Rights Defenders.

Mr host can I vent my views in your program: 1. The country has a constitution which was chosen by the collectively. 2. The constitution we has a constitution imposed to us by the British so parliament of that time voted that it was not suitable for Emaswati thus the decision to revoke it. 3. Swazi- land was a name given to us by the British like zulu - land so we are happy that it was changed back to where it were . 4. Madam Mary is not correct when she says we are dinyed free of speech, we speech freely and we gather freely 5. June 2021 people were killed including chief Mahloma, babe Mmema, Thulani Maseko, police officers and many of Emaswati forcing Emaswati to adopt a foreign type of democracy which is not inline with our cultural values and traditions. 6. If I can ask you when did Emaswati said they want change 7. Sanctions is a method of the west to suppress the poor , Thulani Maseko was a reasonable man , we wouldn't have loved to see his country being subjected to unnecessary sanctions. 8. Thulani Maseko believed in dialogue not to destroy the poor in the name of democracy.
