Again, third time they made Fred’s parents the culprits, second time it involved hypnotism, and yet it’s the first time it sucked. Fred’s parents in Pirates Ahoy and Mystery Inc. were weird, yeah, but Pirates Ahoy was just a fun Scooby-Doo movie and Mystery Inc. had an interesting drama and reason behind Fred’s parents acting like this. Pirates didn’t give Fred’s mom a motivation because she was hypnotized to do that by the real bad guys, and yet her and Fred’s dad being good but embarrassing parents was ten times more entertaining than Velma’s take on them.

I agree. Furthermore, her problem is that she’s not even beaten up enough to even warrant the audience’s sympathy. There’s so much media where a complete asshole is drunk, broke, down on his luck and fucked up, and somehow the audience learns to kind of respect them, because of how they’re able to crawl through the dirt. Velma on the other hand is literally middle class. She doesn’t know an ounce of suffering, and even when she gets punished, that just leaves her back in square one; a middle class, uninteresting smartass. She’s no more respectable or interesting than an insecure nerd in high school, and if the point was to make her ‘relatable’, they definitely misjudged.

The thing is, Velma is a self insert. A self insert of Mindy Kaling. Based on the irl interviews, its clear that Mindy Kaling is a narcissist. Unfortunately,most self inserts from people like that never get character development, because they never believe there's something wrong with themselves. Developing the character of their self insert is basically agreeing that they themselves have flaws. Narcissists never see any flaws on them selves, only on everybody else. Any smidget of supposed "character development" Velma begrudgingly had was shallow and immediately retconned on the next episodes, evidently because Mindy is checking some checkbox for writing 101 that she downloaded from the internet.

I can get over the meta *humor (not human lol). And I really don’t care about the race swapping as much as some people clearly did. But what I can’t get over is how Mindy kept saying that she always saw herself in Velma and that it didn’t matter what race Velma was. You could easily make a great show where Velma is Indian-coded. Have a background where she’s so smart because of the pressure she feels from her relatives and society as a whole to meet certain intellectual standards. That way, you get the race swapped representation and still stay true to that theme of “Velma doesn’t have to be a specific race”. But when you race swap Velma, completely change her character to being an unlikable moron, and make it that the race swapping was just to poke fun of Fred being White… What’s that accomplish? I would argue that the only race swapped character that made sense was Daphne. As an adopted child myself, I have so many questions about my birth family that will never be answered. Her questioning who her birth parents were and why she has red hair despite being Asian? That’s genius! That works! And then they totally butchered that along with everything else in the series. There were so many directions that they could have taken this show where it would have been amazing! But instead, we got constant insults towards adults that like cartoons and people who don’t fit a certain mold. And to think, we lost so many running and upcoming shows that were replaced by this… These companies really set themselves way back because now people will be even more apprehensive to look into future releases.
@BabyGirlTiny
@BabyGirlTiny Год назад
You can’t say daphnes race swap works and Velma’s don’t based on your reasonings. They could have easily made daphnes parents black and Asian and kept daphne white and kept the same exact story. She didn’t need to be Asian for her story to work. So in that case, her race swapping doesn’t work. Just because you liked it doesn’t mean it worked
@lexezlao

it's not like Velma being race swapped is a completely foreign concept, she was Asian in some of the live action movies and latina in scoob!
@Nameless_mixes
@Nameless_mixes Год назад
@@lexezlao It’s not a foreign idea. But the idea behind race swapping is either A. It has no bearing on the plot whatsoever (which is what I thought the initial vision was based on Mindy’s original explanation) or B. It can be used to tell the story from a different (but still good) perspective. So, if Velma were Asian-coded in any way (Eastern, South-Eastern, Middle/Eastern, Indian, etc.) you could draw inspirations on how much pressure is placed on women by their families to thrive at academics to better their life. The reason why Velma was race swapped would be so that she wouldn’t be a white woman complaining about the privilege of white men (which would be pretty hypocritical and oblivious). But the show doesn’t do anything with that plot. You can make shows where it talks about the systematic privileges that White people experience. But Fred doesn’t seem to benefit from that. He’s falsely accused, gets treated terribly by the public, and his own parents are awful to him. That doesn’t line up with this idea that White people all live easier lives than POC. Instead, it just makes Velma look prejudice for assuming that Fred’s life is so great when it’s actually not he can barely perform basic functions like using a knife or dressing himself. So yeah, I’m aware that her being race swapped is nothing new. And again, I couldn’t care less about it. Creative liberties on the creators’ side. But if they’re going to do it, and not opt to just leave it as simply the swap itself, then you can’t end up in the limbo that we got with this show.
@Nameless_mixes
@Nameless_mixes Год назад
@@BabyGirlTiny But you didn’t actually disprove that it doesn’t work. When you say that “Daphne could have remained White”, cool. She’s probably Irish. That’s why she’s a red head. No problems. But if she’s Asian, then we have more of a mystery. How many Asian people so you know that naturally are red heads? Personally, I know none. So, now you have this internal conflict of not knowing your identity. What’s my race? Ethnicity? Heritage? Culture? What is my background? When you have a character that predominantly displays phenotypically Asian traits with this one glaring anomaly, you run into issues like that. You don’t get that if your character is White with red hair. It could work. It didn’t because the show didn’t realize the opportunity they had to write a compelling character and wanted to focus on meta humor and race baiting humor. If you’re so determined to keep Daphne as White, just say so. Maybe you know who your parents are and are blessed with that experience. Some of us aren’t as lucky and will always have questions about where we come from. Daphne could’ve been a great opportunity in this series to represent that select group.

As a character and as a person, she's a terrible person, who cares about no one but herself, and literally everyone hates her. The show did teach us one thing: "If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it" This show is broken, and the Scooby Doo franchise will never be fixed.

7:15 That third “pitch” should never have been right. It’s incredibly on brand for Velma thanks to the gift of hindsight but they could’ve left some dignity in tact.

What’s Mindys upbringing like? How can someone grow up to be so resentful and ungrateful. And how is this allowed to be projected into a show?

If Velma season 2 actually happens nobody should watch it. Everyone who would have should just ACT like they did and make up a story for each episode that happens. Then once the finale airs one chosen reviewer watches the actual show and figures out who had their “season” turn out the most right.

I had to finish the show before finishing this video. Honestly in retrospective the first season is ass, but I honestly hope for a season 2 in hope that its better, or at the very least give me a appreciation for season 1. I think the main problem with the show is with all the political stuff, gender, race and status, and with how it talks down on the audience. If they toned that down a bit this show would be decently liked Edit: Also I get velmas dad wasn’t the best father but she downright disrespects one of the only few people that downright supported her in the end, the one of the few characters with a actual arc. Like the show tries to make him out to be the bad guy for moving on in his life from a unhappy marriage, and dealing with this iteration of velma as a daughter. Only to locked out of his house despite scenes earlier helping velma in solving the case

After heard you explain about it. It feel like the creators didn’t want to make story about good protagonist to beginning with. Like they want to make a satire story about wannabe Sherlock Holmes who bad at everything. But the company didn’t approve that idea so they use big IP of Scooby Do to bait them to approve.

Thanks for this breakdown of the show Velma. Very insightful. I think we can all agree that it’s not a good show but I wasn’t able to articulate exactly why. I can tell that there’s definitely a level of disgust for the source material and the audience itself.

Everything you've said is so true. In order to create a good mystery, you need to create subtle hints that the audience can pick up on and connect the clues. You also need to establish good and engaging characters that grow and develop over time. Just like Avatar, you pointed out, in Legend Of Koraa develops her character from arrogant to embracing the Avatar status and growing as a character. The same could be said for Ahsoka Tano or Lloyd Garmadon. Characters need to learn a lesson and grow to be better.

Yk i hear they're working on a Scooby Doo show but its like "Scooby Doo pups" or smthn and with Velma this just reminds me of that one Amphibia scene where Anne goes: "You know, there was once a time where id pick out the bug parts, that time has past" and just replace the bug picking part with "there was a time where id hate a Scooby Doo pups show" and thats the SD fandom rm (though i hear it might have been a cancelled project now so that sucks ig)

One needs look no further than Powerpuff Girls 2016 to see proof positive of the final point. That show kept on having to dig deeper and deeper to manufacture outrage, but with each stunt, people paid attention less and less because what they were trying to do was so obvious, and the Law of Diminishing Returns smothered any effect their last-ditch efforts to get people talking may have otherwise had. It got to the point that when it was ultimately cancelled, nobody even _noticed._ Velma is doomed to the exact same fate, to keep trying to ramp up its outrage factor until viewers build up an immunity to it and it languishes into obscurity, unless they can change their paradigm before it's too late. And it probably already _is_ too late.
