Citizenship Day is observed on September 17th every year. It’s a day to honor those who have made the conscious choice to become an American citizen; to assert America's values as a nation built on immigrants. Many overcome much adversity to become a U.S. citizen - all for the hope of achieving the American dream. That dream isn't necessarily always a lofty one. Many immigrants dream of simply finding a job, having a roof over their head, becoming part of a safe and secure community and enjoying the freedoms afforded to Americans by the constitution. The real American dream isn't what happens to the immigrant who becomes a citizen, but rather what happens to this country when immigrants choose to become citizens.

All of this flowery talk is always fine, but I've seen plenty of administrations come and go, and there has never been a single one that did anything for me. Nobody has given me a reason to care all my life, now you want people to get involved because our system is so awful it can't protect against a stark raving lunatic who lies on camera with every breath. When he is allowed to exist for this long, there isn't much of a system here worth saving.

Citizenship is something to be earned and vetted. Not given away and taken for granted without background checks. It’s only about importing voters without vetting individuals. Washington needs an integrity check for the safety of Americans.

I have 2 friends who moved here from England, separately. I also have a friend from Mexico who initially was doing it right but let his status fall to illegal. The two Nigels had to do every step, pay every dime and wait. The Pédro contacted immigration and got pushed to the front of the line and was a citizen in a grand total of 2 months from the day his status became illegal. It was about a week and a half after he contacted them to get back on track. Obama was president at the time
