Your videos have been extremely helpful so thank you for that. I'm currently in practice mode with Mamorino KS with the addition of a metalic tint at the end. I want to have that textured finish which means I'm trying to master the "blotchy" first coat or in other words, leaving high and low spots, then pull it tight with the second. My quesiton is, the pressure applied at any of these stages seems to have a huge effect, how do you get a guage on how much pressure should be applied? Also, have you found long strokes or shorter strokes on the 1st coat work best? Thanks again!
@AlongForItAll
@AlongForItAll Год назад
Great question but might be hard to answer since pressure is really something you have to feel in order to understand. The best way to learn is to practice just like you are doing. There's so many ways of doing a textured look so it really comes down your own personal preference and how you want to apply. As for long or short strokes, I think either work fine. The main thing is if your are doing a textured/patchy first coat, is to try to make your textured spots connect to each other. That usually gives a more organic look rather than two spots that re completely disconnected. Hope this helps.

Thinking about doing a backsplash behind our stove. Does it need to be sealed? Is spaghetti sauce going to stain? Also I love this more matte look with a little bit of shine here and there. So if we should seal, will that ruin that finish of highs and lows? Thanks
@AlongForItAll
@AlongForItAll 3 года назад
I’d use a sealer for sure since you’ll be wiping it down at lot. Plaster is porous so it will absorb liquids when in contact. You should check out firenzecolor’s wall2floor system that’s made for durability. If you want to use Venetian plaster as your finish, you can use some of the wall2floor sealers to give you a high level of protection. I believe there’s different levels of sheen you can get so you should be able to pick whatever you’d like.

Hi thank you for the explanations ,I have regular drywall with orange peel texture how can I start ? Do I need to replace the wall or can I skim the wall and do this? Thank you
@AlongForItAll
@AlongForItAll Год назад
Orange peel texture is perfectly fine to go over with medium to corse plaster. If you want to use a thin or shiny plaster then having a smooth wall is always preferred but not entirely necessary. The first step will be applying a good primer to ensure good adhesion. If there’s any paint chipping off, make sure to take care of that first as your plaster will be latching on to that layer.

What size trowels do we need to plaster for example 200x80mm etc? Can you elaborate more on this
@AlongForItAll
@AlongForItAll 2 года назад
Great question! The application size trowel comes down to your preference. You'll see the professionals using larger trowels so it's quicker. If you are a beginner, I'd definitely not get the biggest trowels. The application trowel size I personally have is the 240x100mm Trap X-Trowel. This is considered the medium size I believe. I also have the 200x80mm X Trowel Finishing Trowel. The smaller size for the burnishing trowel allows you to apply more even pressure while burnishing. Hopefully, this helps answer your question. Venetian plaster is best applied in one full coat at a time. This is because I’d you stop you’ll get a cold joint. It is doable to stop but just a lot harder to make it look seamless if you know why I mean. My best suggestion is to get a friend to help or stop at a edge or seam.

How do you recommend priming the wall? Is a specific material or can you skim with regular joint compound?
@AlongForItAll
@AlongForItAll Год назад
If you need to smooth out your walls, I’d typically use joint compound to skim. After that, I’d go over that with a paint primer to seal the joint compound since it can be sorta reactivated with water. From there you can continue as you normally would with either a quartz primer or directly to Venetian plaster depending on what you are doing.

Do I gain anything in applying a 3rd layer? If so, is it the same technique as the 2nd layer? If so, do I burnish my 2nd layer too?
@AlongForItAll
@AlongForItAll Год назад
It depends on the type of plaster. For a thiner/shiny venetain plaster, people will often apply a 3rd coat to build up the base. If you want to apply a 3rd coat, your 1st and 2nd coats will be applied like your base coats without burnishing, then your 3rd coast will be your final coat that you will burnish. Essentially, your last coat is the only layer that gets burnished and applied a little tighter. Hope that helps.

Would you recommend going out and buying a good quality trowel to begin with? They seem expensive so was wondering if it would help a beginner out.
@AlongForItAll
@AlongForItAll 3 года назад
You definitely don't have to. Here's a link to the exact one I started out with when I began plastering amzn.to/34nNkvv. It's about half the cost of the X-Trowel I use now. You could probably find a cheaper trowel if you look around more on amazon. The main things you want to look for are good quality stainless steel and make sure it's slightly flexible. When you're first starting out the most important thing is to practice technique. No trowel is going to make that easier but once you get the hang of it, you might have more preferences with what you want from a trowel. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

If I want to do this on wood do I need to put a primer down first or what would you recommend? Thanks
@AlongForItAll
@AlongForItAll 2 года назад
You don't necessarily have to use primer but it's always recommended. The reason is that it will give you the best surface to work off of and most of the time allows for the best adhesion. Also, plaster is porous, so it's usually best to seal off the surface so nothing comes through. All that being said, I'd done small samples without primer and it seems to work fine. If you don't use primer, I'd recommend testing it beforehand. Hope this helps!

@AlongForItAll 2 года назад
Hey! Glad you like our videos. You can do both plaster or lime-wash over paint. You will want to prime your walls before doing either so you give it a good surface to adhere to. Lime-wash is definitely easier to apply, so if you are concerned with the learning curve of applying plaster (can take some time to figure out), than that might help you decide on that. Lime-wash is more of a flat, cloudy look where as plaster tends to be more dimensional. The in-person look and feel of Venetian plaster can't really be match by lime-wash. Let me know if this helps or not. Happy to keep discussing if needed. ✌️

There's a few options depending on how much protection you are looking to get out of your sealer. If you have plaster that won't be very close to water and messes but still will need to wipe down, then you can get a product called Acquadivetro. This makes the plaster more hydrophobic which makes it easier to wipe off. If you have plaster that will be next to messes and getting wet a lot, I would actually look at using the Wall2Floor products & sealers as they will give you a higher level of protection. It's a bad idea to use that polishing trowel for initial spreading as it can get scratched and ruins it unless it's for last coat only but I see you had a separate one for burnishing. Extra flexible stainless steel is best for first coat.
@AlongForItAll
@AlongForItAll 2 года назад
I've had good results the way I've been using it. I've also just watched and learned from the people that created the trowel. There are two different styles of the x-trowel. One is more of an application trowel and one is a smaller burnishing trowel. Since they are treated, it's nice to use on the full application process to avoid any black marks on lighter plaster.
@AK88.
@AK88. 2 года назад
I learned this from stucco Italiano but if it's not affecting your burnishing then by all means. Ridgid stainless steel ones are better for base coats before doing finish coats but you run the risk of gliding the mirror surface against grains in that base coat when applying the first finish coat and that will definitely scratch the surface that you can noticebly feel with fingernail and can therefore scratch the surface since it's no longer smooth cancelling out the benefits of the black streak protection

@@middleofdecember9862 I recommend to prime first for any plaster projects!

@@russellgriffiths7780 I skimmed and primed. This was because the board type was not very sutible for this type of project. Ideally, you'd have a completely smooth board to start so you wouldn't have to apply a skim coat first.

I agree haha. I realized this half way through creating the video and just decided to finish it. I hope to re-make some of these videos in the future with darker or more vibrant plasters so it shows up on camera better.

That’s not the kind of trowel any plasterer would use.

The only reason I knew of this trowel is because other plasters were using it.
