Even though I have not seen a huge amount of Spaghetti Westerns, I sincerely doubt that anything can top The Great Silence for me. A perfect film through and through.

So interesting! I love western but I have never experienced the Italian spaghetti westerns. Definitely something that I thought about trying especially after watching some commentary and ideas on the spaghetti western so I think I'm looking forward to trying that out

Arrow western box sets are top notch. Love the Complete Sartana, Ringo and love Django. Definitely buying this one too! Interesting thing, I’ve been watching spaghetti westerns with my wife who isn’t the hugest western fan but she loves the spaghetti westerns and when I went over to watch a Ranown movie she’s like “man, these sure move slow don’t they” haha. Spaghetti westerns are meant for my wife I guess!

Your reviews are the best and you always let us know about language in these types of movies and for me that's really important as I'm not familiar with these types of movies and you answer everything and most of the time I just need to finish the video before I have any questions. Take Care and Stay Safe.

Love a good spaghetti western and this set looks awesome. Great advance preview Heath while I wait (probably for ages 😫) for my set to arrive here in Australia. Living vicariously through your vid in the meantime 😁. Plus I can tick another Fulci film off the filmography. I love collecting as much of a complete works in the best versions possible from directors I really dig and Fulci is one of them (amongst many others!). Of course as you rightly say Leone is the no brainer spaghetti western benchmark with probably Corbucci next for mine in terms of the amount of spags of quality he produced (how good is The Great Silence!!). Probably my fave outside of that though is Sergio Sollima's The Big Gundown. Absolutely love that film. This Vengeance Trails set of course will be extra awesome to dig into given the great book and those masses of extra features. *Rubs hands in glee*. If recommending spags for newbies I'd go with : 1) The Dollars Trilogy (all 3) 2) Django 3) The Big Gundown 4) The Great Silence 5) My Name Is Nobody

Hi Cereal At Midnight, Did you notice the reversal sleeves on this particular set have a miss print? Mine do. “My name is Pecos” and “Massacre Time” have the same pictures on the sleeve, and so do others. It’s an error. This is not uncommon with Arrow the last few years. Anyway, when you get a chance, maybe see what yours has. Thanks, Vlad

I love a lot of Spaghetti Westerns. I started getting into them back in the late '80s when I took a college class in cinematography. Sergio Leone is the ultimate director of Spaghetti Westerns with incredible movies like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; A Fistfull of Dollars; and For a Few Dollars More (Dollars Trilogy). His masterpiece is Once Upon a Time in the West. But you have to also include Duck, You Sucker! (Fistfull of Dynamite). However, I would highly recommend watching any other Speghetti Western on Amazon Video or RU-vid before making a purchase. In my opinion, they are so hit and miss. Some people like the Sergio Corbucci movies, others don't. For example, I like The Mercenary (1968), but I don't like Django (1966). A couple of things always seem to make them great -- Ennio Marricone's scores and the earlier the movie the better (later movies get lazy imho). I also seem to gravitate to Lee Van Cleef, like in Death Rides a Horse. There are lot of films to check out, then you can buy the ones you really like.

Hi, Just watched the Netflix Spaghetti Western documentary which is on You tube, and superb. In regard to the dialogue, the actors, (Spanish, English, German, Italian, sometimes Mexican) would literally count numbers in their native language,orcanything else besides, not the script dialogue, as the dub was added after the film had been shot. Hence the dub and the dialogue never match but it's part of their charm in my opinion. Great review Heath, of what looks like an awesome boxset. Lets hope these releases are popular because we could do with more of the same quality. Lee Van Cleef, the master of Spaghetti Westerns :0) Atb Andy H

It seems that most of these Spaghetti Westerns were filmed in southern Spain. That new Western series "That Dirty Black Bag" was filmed in that area.

As I recall Italian films were always around 2 hours because in the 60s Italian movie theatres did not allow smoking so they needed an interval for a smoke break....however I loooove westerns and am trying to compile all the films of Lee Van Cleef on Bluray ..some are so hard to find..

Spaghetti western I have heard the term many times but since I’m not into westerns or haven’t been I have no idea what a spaghetti western is. Thank you for giving me a list of spaghetti westerns that I need to check out. This is something that sounds fascinating and I would be most likely enjoying. Definitely gonna pick this set up, right in my wheelhouse. This as slightly off topic, but I wondered if you might have seen the film I worked on in 2017? The title is "The man who killed Hitler and then the Bigfoot". I feel like you might be one of those people who could appreciate the film, it can be a bit polarizing, because it subverts expectations a bit. There's elements that touch on homage to exploitation films (hence the crazy title), but for the most part it's a slow burn character drama about life regrets. Even though we made the film for under 2 million dollars, all the crew were so invested in the project that it came out with a real level of visual beauty and I feel like it can easily stand next to a lot of big budget films in the look and feel of it's production values. One of the best experiences of my life, and getting to meet and work with Sam Elliot was so much fun. If you get a chance to check it out, I'd like to hear what you think.
@CerealAtMidnight

I LOVED The Man Who Killed Hitler and then the Bigfoot! Very cool that you worked on it! Yes, very subversive movie, but one that has a lot of interesting ideas and themes, for those who are patient. When I finished Hitler/Bigfoot, it occured to me that there are at least three interpretations to the movie, and that none of them feel like a stretch or like they're right or wrong. There's even an interpretation that the story is all in Elliott's mind, which I like. It plays on multiple levels and doesn't offer solid answers, and I loved it for that. We need more movies that take those risks and can start conversations. It's one of those films that feels like a singular vision, not a hodgepodge driven by executives and focus groups. So glad that you're associated with it. May I ask what your involvement was?

@@CerealAtMidnight That's awesome that you liked it! I have been good friends with the writer/director Bob K for many years, even got to read the screenplay in its formative stages, and that's how I got involved with the production. I am a graphic artist/illustrator by trade, but I've always liked making three dimensional objects too, so I was given the job of prop maker for the film. Almost every shot in the film features something I had to fabricate by hand, so it's hard to watch the movie with me without being annoyed by "there's that thing I made for this shot", lol. Before this, the only other feature I worked on was in the art dept. for Lucky Mckee's "The Woman", which was shot around 2010 here in western Mass. where I live. I've been a cinephile my whole life, but the idea of working in the film industry never seemed like anything attainable, having grown up and lived solely in New England. I feel really lucky to have been able to work with so many people I'd idolized my whole life, the pool of epic talent involved was insane: Doug Trumball, Richard Yuricich, Rococo Gioffre who you might know from some little movies like 2001: a Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Close Encounters, etc. And John Sayles, Sam Elliot, Aiden Turner, the list goes on... Can't wait to see what Bob's next script to be filmed will be, he is definitely dedicated to making artful cinema!

Ah, that's fantastic! Congrats to you being able to step into that world and be a part of it. Next time I watch Hitler/Bigfoot, I'll have to pay special attention to the props. Speaking of The Woman, my friend, writer Joshua Jabcuga, was mentored by Jack Ketchum, who as you know co-wrote the movie and book The Woman was based on. Sometimes it's a small world!

Oh, that's a tough question! I'm gonna go with Vengeance Trails since it's four different directors, actors, and stories. Sartana is a franchise, so they're all kind of similar. Vengeance Trails will give you a wider look at the genre, even though all four movies share the revenge theme.

Yeah, it was a sub-genre of the Yakuzu films where the gangs were female (usually school age). Haven't seen that one, but it's a pretty fun exploitation niche I'd like to be able to see more of without resorting to bootlegs.

Arrow releases are pretty damn good. Even though it's only a 2K remaster, on a 4K upscaling player, you should get some pretty excellent PQ. Remastering these older 60s and 70s films to 4K would probably be a waste.

So what does the term “Spaghetti” western mean? I recognize which movies are but how did they get that name?
@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight 3 года назад
Honestly, it's kind of a derogatory term, and one that Arrow themselves avoided with the box set. It's slang because the movies are almost always Italian. A more accurate description would be "Italian Westerns" or "Euro Westerns." But I've been watching these movies for a long time, and the term Spaghetti Western is wired into me. I guess it's like calling a martial arts movie a "Chop Socky" film. Not the best way to describe it.

@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight 3 года назад
I see. For anyone else who sees this comment, the tiny 1/2 inch pictures of the films above the titles on the spine of the art wraps are incorrect on 3 of the 4 movies. Unfortunate, but I do forgive them. Mistakes happen, and luckily it's a minor one that has nothing to do with the film presentation itself or the cover art. Maybe they'll issue a wrap replacement program, but I understand if they don't.
