And the red hat, aka as Fez in Turkish or Tarboosh in arabian levantine, was an ottoman turkish invented hat that muslims, mostly Turkish and arab muslims of levantine,egypt and morroco wore throughout the caliphate. The biggest element was the jannisaries, elite guard of the sultan, anyone who wasn't favored by the jannisaries in Istanbul would have quite a hard time to keep his rule together, Suleiman the Magnificent's father Selim the Cruel for example, overthrown his father by the support of jannisaries and eventually killed him in order to make sure he won't be any future threat. This gladiator arena may seem harsh and bloody, but it also served to the realm, the rise of the Ottomans came with the 10 good emperors who were strong, smart, experienced and had will to do what's necessary. Then Ahmet the first changed this law with keeping all princes in the capital caused a bunch of inexperienced, psychologically unstable leaders who blew everything up.

***** You're mixing two different time zones here. The Ulema were always a strong religions authority in the Abbisinian and Ummaiyad Caliphate. The ulema were the scholars who did the advancements. They were not a religious body overseeing rituals. That's the middle ages. Truly speaking the indian and chinese philosophies/sciences were far reliable and accurate than greek/roman. I would not discredit them though. They had their share. The printing press belongs to the time period when the Caliphate went to the Ottomons. We're talking about early modern age now. Centuries later. Not the middle ages. The European nations were busy colonizing the world. Printing only the Quran was considered haram, not any other book. Moreover it was not completely a religious ban. The printing press was an European invention and it was more of a battle of ideas than religious influence. They never expected how useful it would be later on. Now every copy of Quran is printed. If it had religious reasons then the press would still be haram. You also have to understand that banning the printing press was not a universal order for the whole Muslim world as you say it. The ottomans did not control a lot of now muslim countries.

+HaMooDi86 what are you saying? you are mixing between the third caliph "Uthman bin Affan" born in the 7th century with the turkic muslim, father of the ottoman empire, Osman bey, who started the ottoman empire aka Osmanli in Turkish. Uthman bin affan indeed was the companion of the prophet but he is not related with the ottoman empire in any way. Actually the ottoman caliphate controlled the Levantine, North africa and parts of the Arabian peninsula only in the 16th century.
