I have a question The Armchair Historian, I have read other sources stating that Ottomans and Venice Republic actually had much better relationships, with venetians being the main responsible for the trade of western goods in to Ottoman territory and acting as bankers (since usura was forbidden by Islam, all Ottoman financial system was actually done by venetian traders).

You missed that Venice in the 1300’s conquered much more land in Italy such as aquelia, Verona, and beracia than just the city of Venice itself

It's something you will sometimes hear in older "deep" song lyrics, or used as by people my age (23) ironically/sarcastically to comment on others other people. But it's no were near as common as YOLO, and you are far more likely to hear your parents use the expression then young people and I don't think I've ever heard millennials use it. It wouldn't surprise me if it's a reference to something, with have lost it's meaning over time.

I was right (just looked it up), it's a reference to an old Italien expression "Vidi Napoli é pòi muori" with is a pun on the Italien word for die (muori) with is pronounced like the Italien city of Mori. This expression was in it self a reference to a syphilis epidemic with spread though europe in the late 1400, and was believed to have originated in the aria of Napoli.

Much of the conquest of the Italian north-east was unopposed. It was the time of the expansion of the Duchy of Milan and the Papal State, and the choice was between becoming part of a rich and stable Republic or being continuely passed between the other two players, with good possibilities of being sacked one or more times for generation. None really had stable armies in the Renaissance, only mercenaries and militia raised on occasions. The success of Venice in the war of the League of Cambrai was due, other than in its diplomatic ability, to the fact that the major European powers could win pitched battles vs. the Venetian army, but not pay their mercenaries long enough to win the war. And that was due exactly to the fact that, once conquered by the Imperial or French forces, the cities of Nort-east soon rebelled to return under the Republic. Actually Venice was peculiar in the fact that much of its sea soldiers and oarsemen were Venetian free citizens.

The hanseatic league is a trade league of northern european cities in the holy roman empire and scandinavia that mostly dealt with trade in the baltic sea around the 13th century and was one of the major elements why northern europe became richer and more important than southern europe over the coming centuries

@@johncolasont6195 at some point some *cities* became powerful enough (through economics) to challenge prominent kingdoms (Norway) and prominent duchies (Flanders) militarily and economically, by themselves. The hanseatic league consisted of multiple powerful trading cities.

Achillez Protips on Venice in M2TW. Ally France, Hungary, and the Papal States, but snag some trade agreements with the HRE to keep them off your back. Keep a moderate Garrison (a few Italian Militia should do) in Venice, but use your army from Zagreb and Ragusa to push into the Balkans with mercs. Also, use a small force to land from Crete in western Turkey and form an alliance (if you can) with the Turks. The Byzantines usually don't bother you in Turkey, and when the war is initiated with them, most of their armies will be in the Balkans. This isn't too much of a problem, because Hungary generally goes to war with the Byzantines over Sofia, and so do the Turks. If you are still worried about the threat of the HRE attacking from Bologna, build the barracks in Venice to quickly hire militia crossbowmen. You can then post a fort with a small Garrison in the Alps, blocking the route from Innsbruck, and an army over the bridge from Bologna into Veneto. In the early stages of the game, Italian militia are far superior to anything else. If they do attack, play out the battles and position your crossbowmen on flanking positions around the bridge, or from height advantages. Use your Spears to block and your cavalry to flank, and blam, goodbye HRE. With some good Diplo, you can also get France to join you. But, beware of Milan. (P.S. For better world Diplo score, release hostages. It makes all nations look favorably upon you. If you always execute them or start unjust wars, other nations won't like you. Generally, I like to get other nations pissed off at me by parking troops in their land and having them declare on me when they've had enough. It makes them the belligerent, not you.)

Also, focus on econ buildings first, after the barracks in Venice. And build well positioned watch towers. One on the border of Durrazo will give you notice of advancing Byzantines, one north of Zagreb will give you notice of the HRE from Vienna.

it's beter to get your army and send it to genoa/milan, at the same time hiring mercs and spear militia on the way, declare war turn three and make sure your in enough movement points to beseige them attack next turn with only with a ram, by doing this you bypass the pope telling you to stop fighting and boom by turn five you have doubled your income, lost your biggest early game rival and also have goo opportunities to unite italy. Send diploamts to everyone for trade, offer milatary access and maps since you lose nothing for it, and gets maps in return if possible. turn on byzantium with your troops in crete (who you should have built a barracks in and have a good 20 stack of miltia and the lesser levy), send your troops to take the italian rebels leaving the rest of europe for everyone else, the balkans are usually Hungaries terriotory and they will attack you if you take zargosa. tips fort in the alps region to stop HRE or France if you want, i just keep garrisons in Miland and Venice and send them out to deal with any rogue armies going further. DONT build economic buildings early game, they are too expensive and only long term while troops and troops buildings serve the short and long term, and any way the AI use cheats and the cities and castles you take will be amaing in pop and thus buildings. Merchants are a pain in the ass to use, usually enemies will zzerg rush your merchants and kick them out of buissness, so always send them out to Spain, turkey and egypt. plus the extra distance bring more money navies are expensive and mostly pointless, invest in only one transport ship per army and always land before the end of your turn, you lose a ship hire a merc one each turn, a big navy will cost more. always sack cities so much money and in the late game its rediculous, you don't lose the level even if its below pop alliances are useless and give your enemies land target seiges and not battles against countries, battles are pointless and you can kill a faction with just taking their cities/castles. attack rebel armies though because they suck and will attack lightly defended areas. leave free garrisons only, or two men garrisons if it isn't free, most cities won't be attacked and you should be conquering people in the direction they could come to you random invasions are annoying but easy to deal with, don't plan against them just let them come. raise taxes to the highest it allows without it being at negative growth, if the place is blue its good, if it's red lower the taxes or put some more men, 70% hapiness is roughly the optimal amount and will cause negative events, like rebellions or riots crusades are amazing, just get the minimum amount needed to start it then send them on their way with a ton of mercs, sack everything in your way, I.e if its a crusade for Jerusalem sack cairo and alexzandria on your way, the enemy will be busy the others. Make the pope love you, give money all good diplo things, and also spam priests and send to low catholic provinces if your lucky you can have 3-5 cardinals spam infantry and cav leave ranged for defence, ranged are useless in seiges and in battles you can just zerg rush with cav. play your strenghts, venice is very strong in terms of infantry, they get the pavissa crossbowmen and also op light cav. don't be afraid of evey nation being at war with you, they are also at war with others and a simple 20 stack can defend 4-6 cities/castles spam mercs, then disband them the same turn for battles and seiges wathc towers are useful but don't spam them, same with forts forts in mainland europe are useless, only do it for choke points, or armies that are stuck in the middle of nowhere. probably my biggest point, you only need one castle per front, convert everyone else into a city, not only do they produce more money, but their units are better for defence (pavissa and miltia) castles should only be for making offensive troops as an empire of 50 towns/cities i only had 5 castles and even then that was too much, i couldn't afford always recruting men in all of them.

According to Mark Kurlansky did Venice attribute their success to their salt trade policies. *"Venetian exporters were required to bring back salt when they returned to Venice, for which they were paid a subsidy. Salt was then resold by the Republic at a profit. According to Kurlansky, salt accounted for nearly 50% of Venetian imports between the 14th and 16th centuries."* onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/j.1524-6175.2002.01091.x So their government anti-free market subsidy helped Venice to become one of the greatest trading empires during the middle ages. Because it allowed trade ships to go out and buy salt from other towns to secure the salt supply of Venice, and meanwhile did the traders also bring with them other type of goods from other towns so that Venice became the great trade center of Europe. So trade grew thanks to this salt subsidy, and as more trade was done, then more ships were built, and the more ships Venice had then the more powerful navy their naval power became.
