VENICE MURANO GLASSBLOWING 

As always I love what Stephanie and Oliver share - not only here but on their own channels as well. I have a few pieces of Murano glass, two of them are perfume bottles well over 100 years old, which I got for $3 at a garage sale. The seller told me her mother got them from Murano when she was young and the seller was well into her 80's. I asked her if she was sure that she wanted to sell them so low in price and she said she just wants them to go to someone who loves them and I do!

It is really nice that you are pointing out all the work behind handblowed glass, thank you for that. I am a Norwegian glassblower and I had my own glasStudio-hut outside Oslo for many years. It is a magical work, but very hard and also dangerous because you will get a lot of glasspowder in you body and lungs after some years. It is wonderful to to see this Maestro in Morano. I had my glass-education in Costa-Boda in Sweden, and that is also one of the best places to learn this difficult artform. Thanks again Stephanie for this video.🫧💓💎💓🫧🔥

The skill and the artistry of all the people having taken part in this video is absolutely stunning. Cat has excelled to new levels of craftswomanship, with Stephanie a proud second ! 🥇🥈 it is no wonder that this precious and rather fragile material was, and still is, the envy of the world. Here is my feeble attempt to put it into words: Hot as lava‘s molten stone, blown and twisted to a cone. Ephemeral colour scheme glinting in the brightest beam. Through the artist‘s craft perfected that all light is held reflected. It‘s Venetian to the core, magical forevermore.

I'm so impressed with all the team work and hard work it takes to do the glass blowing. Such beauty.

Glass is fascinating I got to work In a glass making studio for a short time before the pandemic. It was so much fun to watch.

FYI- most of the glass production furnaces on Murano are closed during the hot summer months. The demonstrations for tourists are year round. Mannin 56 is my favorite shop on Murano to buy glass and many of the pieces shown are sold there.

When Louis XIV began building Versailles, he tried to lure glass blowers to France, but apparently they began to die mysteriously. Eventually he abandoned that idea and developed his own glass making techniques, including mirror making. French mirrors quickly improved over the Venetian ones which were very small and terribly expensive. The Hall of Mirrors was the result which could not have been created with the Venetian glass of that time. I have an interesting book about Louis XIV influence on the French luxury trades. If I can find it, I will let you know the name of it. Loving the drama of the process. When I went to Venice all those years ago, I missed Murano due to time catching up with me. I feel so inspired to return! Thank you for the video! It was EPIC! Full Marks to Stephanie and Cat for a magnificent job!

You can certaunly tell you have all been friends for a long time, so comfortable in each others company. The glass blowing is a fascinating art, I could watch for hours. I now have a different view of hand made glassware, all the hard work and knowledge handed down through the years. Cat is always happy and smiling but today definitely over the moon with joy. I think glassblowing is one of the most fascinating arts, not only to watch but to see the results! I used to have a boyfriend who is a glassblower. I loved watching him work. I still have a few of his pieces. And actually, he's responsible for my name, Jax. It's amazing the teamwork, and as George Grant mentions, the skill and artistry, needed to create these absolutely stunning pieces. Glass blowing ! Mind blowing ! What craftsmanship ❤

Beautiful video I must say. Just one thing: Venetians DID have gardens, they still do. There are several, in fact about 500 of them. Only they are not so easy to spot. Some can be seen from the Grand Canal, some are hidden behind walls, some are quite large, like the Eden garden on the Giudecca. After being taken care of in the late 19th cent. by British garden lovers, Frederick and Caroline Eden, sister of the famous gardener Gertrude Jekyll, the garden passed to the Greek monarchy and in 1979 it was acquired by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Hundertwasser’s idea was to leave the garden to its wild growth, but it is well looked after. Unfortunately is not open to the public. There are the public gardens close to St Mark's in the direction of the Harry's Bar. There are very large gardens, even with vineyards and orchards behind the walls of some convents, like the one connected to the Church of the Scalzi, or the large garden built by Mariano Fortuny at the Giudecca and of course the wonderful parks on San Servolo island, and the park on San Giorgio island, where there is even a theatre. So, perhaps, next time you go to Venice, you could set on a garden tour of the town.

How spectacular was this episode? From ages and ages of times passed through to today, the same general techniques have been used to create blown glass Murano masterpieces. Extraordinary.

I was a hot and cold glass artist for almost 20 years. gaffergal was my moniker 😊 glass blowing was a men only craft, and is very sexual in its terms. The reheating furnace is called the gloryhole! 🤦🏼‍♀️First time my teacher told me to jack it harder and tighter I almost dropped the blowpipe, laughing so hard! It’s I fabulously craft, especially if you like heat! Burns happen, but always worth the joy of creating. As we say in our studio, blow big, blow hot, blow fast or stay home. Glad you were able to experience especially in Murano!

I shared this video with my son who traveled to Italy during his last year of school. They went to a glass blowing factory in Venice and he brought me a beautiful blue vase with gold decorations. He said this wasn't the one they went to but it was very similar. Thanks sharing. 🙂🇨🇦

My husband and I were able to go to Murano when we traveled to Venice! We bought a large Pelican with a fish inside the glass. Heavy!!!! It was beautiful 😍 When we made a big move, it came with the rest of our donated items to our church. Can't cling to material things .

I actually worked a tiny bit with glass as a teenager at a special school I atteded back then. I LOVE glass! Always have always will.

This was the most enjoyable vlog. So much activity between friends, and the Murano masters. In 2018, whilst I was in Venice, taxi booked for Murano the next morning with my American friend - we were hit by a storm. Boats cancelled and no travel across the islands. And so I missed my trip. It feels like I was there. Cat is wonderful and smart. Stephanie is a creative through and through. Best vlog. I truly enjoyed it. Thank You👌🏾

Ah, thank you for the memories! I had the good fortune to work (briefly) with Paul Ysart. He was of Catalan descent, but he and his brothers started Vasart in Scotland, specialising in double-dipped glass. He later became the glass-master of Caithness Glass in Wick in Caithness. He specialised in millifiori, in paperweights and perfume bottles. Google him!

This one took me back to my own visit to Murano over Christmas in 1967! My friend and I were not able to try glassblowing but I remember the process and the heat very well. On our visit, there was an exit through the gift shop that left me short on rent money for three months.

When we went to Murano last september, we were told that many of the glass-makers have had to shut down their furnaces because of the major increase in the price of natural gas.

There is a glass blowing studio just north of us, and during the holidays you can go and blow ornaments, which is so much fun. I’ve done lampworking, have all the equipment, it was a lot of fun creating beautiful beads. I’ve always wanted to go to Murano to watch the Masters at work. Amazing work. also its still the same guild and they are still apprentice trained. they are one of the VERY VERY few exceptions to EU child labor laws LOL. The first recorded glassmaker in Venice was named Domenicus Fiolarus, or Dominic the glassblower. that was in the 900s. so 1100 years. not sure where that article got 1500.
