Detailed procedure on how to rebuild a 1969-72 Chevy vent window assembly. Includes disassembly, cleanup, polishing and reassembly.

The rivet squeezer I use in this video is a Kent-Moore J39354 rivet installer. However you can't use the one made for flaring grommets! That is a different tool, even though it looks the same. The tool I use is specifically made to flare the semi-tubular rivets that you will use on these vent windows. I believe you can get the proper rivet installer from your local Harley-Davidson dealer, but it's going to be expensive...$300+.

Had Jerry redo my vent windows a couple of years ago. Just now putting them into the truck. Excellent job and I highly recommend his work. Do yourself a favor and let him rebuild yours. You will only wonder why you tried it when you get into these windows. Take my advice.

I glue them with 3m black weatherstrip adhesive and install them wet, not dry or you may not get the felts into the channel.Put a thin layer of adhesive on both surfaces and push the felts all the way into the post channel.

Thanks for the detailed vid. I was about to give up and take my windows to a shop but this vid saved me some cash and some pride.

Hi Tino, Thanks for the nice comments! I bought the tool from a local dealer that sells Harley Davidson parts and supplies. This is an expensive tool ($300+), but I fond it handy for many projects that involve tubular rivets. This tool is set up for flaring the rivets on the Harley hard bag hinges and works great. I'll post a link where I bought mine in my video description above.

Since I started rebuilding these vent windows for customers, I have decided that I have to increase the labor cost from $125/pair to $150/pair. I found that I was putting in a lot more time on rebuilding due to improvements on my procedures and increased material costs. However, this makes for a better end product. I don't like price increases any more than the next guy, but I felt I had to do this to make it worthwhile to provide this service. Thank you all for your support! ~~~ Dr. J

Hey Jerry, I have an 1986 K5. if I sent you both of the vent windows, glass for the drivers side, and new weather stripping for the two, can you do it? And about how long does it take to do this process?

if you are talking about the felt channels that go into the vent window post, I install them with 3m black weatherstrip adhesive. You can get this at most auto parts stores. The 3M part number is 08011

Thank you for the outstanding video! You showed me all the details I would have otherwise had to learn the hard (expensive) way. It's always nice to know how involved any project is before I find myself hip deep in it. Now I just need to know where to get me one of those Vise-Grip looking tubular rivet tools!

That is a Kent-Moore rivet squeezer and you might be able to find one at your local Hartley dealer but they are quite expensive! $300+

Jerry, Thank you soooo... much for taking the time to instruct us on these vent windows, very helpful. I am ready to reinstall the vent window but am having trouble finding that tub rivet. No one around where I live has one, where do you get yours?
@jerrykassis5181

I purchase my rivets from JayCee Rivet, www.rivetsonline.com , however you have to purchase 100 or more rivets at a time. You can get a rivet kit from The Filling Station, part # FS-633 which includes the tubular rivets, the shoulder pivot rivets and a hand flaring tool. www.fillingstation.com

Thanks for the video Jerry! Seems like there will be a couple of minor differences between the older Chev and my '85 (it's a one piece rubber design, for starters), could you comment on any differences in the procedure or the parts/ tools needed for later models? Thanks again!

@jerrykassis5181 10 лет назад
Hi Kevin, Thanks for the nice comments! I haven't done one like yours, but I can't imagine that it could be much different than the 67-72's. I think once you get into it, you will see what I mean. If you have any questions while going along, just ask. Thanks, Jerry
@MrKevPel
@MrKevPel 10 лет назад
Jerry Kassis Jerry, I just finished the job... pretty much as you said, the only significant difference is that the one-piece rubber doesn't get riveted to the window frame, you have to use a weatherstrip adhesive and glue it in. It's a little tricky to not make a mess but other than that I just followed along with your video.

Jerry, how did you install the division bar inserts? glue or rivet?
@jerrykassis5181
@jerrykassis5181 Год назад
I only put two or three dabs of silicone inside the channel, but normally the channel fits so tightly that you don't really need to do that. I do install one semi-tubular rivet at the bottom of the channel to ensure that the channel does not come out. I believe that GM did install a rivet at the bottob also.

Are the vent window seals from LMC Truck lower quality? I spent about four hours just trying to get the seals to go into the channel and in one spot it kept popping out. I've really lost my patience with this project and will be buying new vents instead. $220 each is looking like a real bargain at this point.
@jerrykassis5181
@jerrykassis5181 Год назад
I use The Filling Station seals, part number CV-65. I have installed many, many of these and they work perfectly. I also spray the back of the seals with silicone spray to ease the installation. Makes a huge difference!

I haven't tried LMC's seals, so I can't attest to the fit. I have installed several sets of The Filling Station's seals and they fit well. Maybe you can email me a pic of where you are having this trouble so I can possibly give you an idea how to solve this problem. Although I have not had the direct experience, I had one customer tell me that he tried three sets of the repop assemblies, and none fit properly. I build them for $125/ea + parts.
