Venture Bros. got a headstart and actually cares about the world it is building. R&M is all about making Existential Horror into a Comedy... hence why the series breaks itself apart so much.
Honestly? i think Rick and Morty is lazy. Dan Harmon knows that he can serve up dog turds and the fans will praise its taste. like honestly, 3 seasons in and theres not been any tangible character development or advancement in overarching plot, want to know why? because Dan Harmon view of people is narrow minded as he doesnt believe people really make any real changes and if they do its not positive and finally *drumroll please* theres no overarching plot as Dan Harmon cant be bothered. This doesnt make Rick and Morty bad necessarily, i found it can be funny on occasion but unlike Venture bros theres nothing to follow, the episodes follow a simple formula of Rick's an asshole, something happens that puts things slightly off Rick's intended course, Rick solves it because hes God. Rick is the shows own problem in that hes basically the god of his universe (probably a pun in there somewhere) and any tension in any situation is instantaneously diffused by how he can do anything (an ultimate Mary/Gary Stu) theres not a single person in the Venture bros universe who is that powerful, Rusty has brought his sons back from the dead 13 times and hes far from Rick-level power, Brock is a one man army whos killed hundreds of people with his knife and bare hands but even hes not that good (he could be seen as a Gary stu or demigod). Rick's infallibility derails his own show. Whats more Rick is the smartest being in every conceivable universe and yet he is ridiculously narrow-minded, petty and constantly parrots Dan Harmon's own simplistic views on human nature. How does that make any sense, you'd think with all he knows and has seen that he would be a bit more advanced in his thinking (better at prioritizing for one) and given how long hes survived in an environment which he constantly seeks to make more dangerous for himself that he could maintain control over those vices and learn to let things go and be less stubborn, people who cant rule themselves often are the first to die in media as a sort of comeuppance for hubris and lack of temperance (not to mention this kind of thinking interferes with someone's ability to be rational and logical). A simple solution to the 'Rick problem' would be to oh, i dont know, do an episode or two without him.
I'd like to see a Bizarro Episode set in an alternate universe where Rusty decided to go on full-on supervillain like Killanger wanted and The Monarch forced himself to become a superhero just so he could keep up his antagonism towards him. Then Canon-universe Rusty and Monarch see this and have a brief existential crisis before deciding to pretend they did not see anything.
they are also watch and ward. design and contextual relevance have them being the perfect surrogate for the writer and passive observer. they control nothing but often have a hand in almost everything.
@Liz Lee JJ wasn't really the copy of Jonas, just someone who knew of the legend and nothing of the man. Hell, even Rusty doesn't know just how much of a piece of garbage Jonas was.
@Liz Lee I think it started out about failure and then became about identity, and then looking back at the earlier material, we can actually see it was always there. What's interesting about failure is how we come to identify ourselves by the thing we are TRYING to do, but if we fail, what does that mean for our identity? Do we keep on trying to preserve our sense of who we are, or do we redefine ourselves in some way to change the facts? I haven't played a show or recorded a song in over a year, and I'm struggling right now with the fact that I have spent the last 12 years thinking of myself primarily as "a musician". What do I do with that? It makes that dialogue within the show really real for me.

The Venture Bros. deconstructs the cartoon trope of people being either "heroes" or "villains". People in both fiction and real life can be mostly good or mostly evil but its like how someone is never "just" a cop or bankrobber or priest or satanist. They're always an individual person beyond their role and/or job.
"It's a slippery slope once you start living as your character." For the last hundred years or more, pop culture has been telling us to "find ourselves." But I think a lot of people just find a persona, and think that's enough. Until it fails them, and they have an identity crisis. People spend way too much time worrying about who they are, instead of just letting themselves be.
On one hand, you got Red Death, who is a sadistic murderous monster who loves killing and causing pain on duty and a kind and loving family man and a shoulder to cry on when off the clock. On the other, you got the Jonas Venture Sr., whom everyone knows as a legendary heroic scientist adventurer and not the hedonistic, opportunistic, self-serving bastard that treats his son as a tool. And on the middle, you got Captain Sunshine, who is dedicated to being a superhero who saves people but is riddled with tons of crippling baggage caused by the trauma of fighting crime as a small child who he was Wonder Boy. We can also include Desmond, the original Captain Sunshine, into the middle for saving lives but also putting a child in traumatic situations as her sidekick.

mythra 717 I know, I was referring to his gravelly voice not the Scottish accent. But I switched it to Carter Pewterschmidt as he has the same gravelly voice. I would’ve said Dean Martin, but Dean Martin sounds like copycat lol. There is so many damn characters it’s hard to name someone without them having been portrayed as an inspiration on the venture brothers already.
The monarchs laugh is addictive. It fills me with such childlike glee and excitement, that it makes me want to be a villain too just so i can laugh maniacally like that
10:35 The symbolism to how all his friends are essentially like his own army to protect him whether he knew it or not. The only thing superseding my anticipation for Season 8 is the Switch release of Doom Eternal, the closest game we can get to being the only man more awesome then Brock Sampson.

A+ analysis. Your breakdowns of both how fucked up Rusty is and what arching truly means to the Monarch are spot on. I especially loved the visual juxtaposition at 10:12 of Killinger and Rusty's conversation with the images of Malcolm becoming the Monarch becoming the Blue Morpho. Something I wanna add to Malcolm's very self-unaware feelings about the Blue Morpho persona, is that after doing it for the first time with 21, he excitedly exclaims that it was the most fun he'd ever had
I think you were right, whilst all the other characters are evolving and growing, Rusty and Malcolm (Monarch) are so traumatized by their pasts that they can't move on.
Came here right after finishing the movie. I'm so depressed now that it's over. It's like watching a lifelong friend speak their last words before dying in front of you. Sat in silence after the aftercredits scene when the realization that it's over hit me like a truck.
I just finished watching it as well. It's kind of a shame, I really felt just how crunched season 8 was into this movie. I can totally picture a far more spaced out version of this story, but with the crunch into a movie there's still so many questions that feel like plotholes. It feels like I watched a wikipedia summary of season 8, with all the highlights of the season forever locked to youtube clips, and I'll never, ever be able to watch the full season. Ah well, at least all the hank stuff was great. The scenes where he lost his mind were wonderful.
#SaveVentureBros it's a shame we never got a season 8, i would have loved to seen the fallout from the info that the monarch and rusty are (spoilers for the ending of season 7) infact half brothers. heck i bet their is a guild law, that cause of that he always had the right to arch Rusty.
This is a great analysis of the show and I've honestly never thought of Rusty as the antagonist but yeah that kind makes sense. I've honestly always seen OSI and the Guild if calamitous intent as the antagonists in the show but Rusty is just as if not worse than them.
It's amazing to look at how the art has evolved over the past seven seasons. Season one does not look very good, but season seven looks amazing. I need to rewatch from the beginning there's new jokes and references to find everytime. Go Team Venture!

This was a brilliant inner monologue on the show. You were riding on the cusp of it. There's an old saying, "when you pull off the mask, the face comes off with it." Never has it been more true than it is on this show. The characters are all constantly trying on different identities,... in search of,... in search of ____?
Half a year later, and this video has almost double the views. Very nice. I am reminded of the scene where *The Monarch and DMTM make a huge GoT/Rocky reference in the bedroom,* and where 21 and Malcolm talk about the true heir to The Iron Throne, and I remember now that Season 8, the final season of Game of Thrones, is upon us now. Let us hope that S8 of Venture Bros comes neither too quickly, nor too late.
Venture Bros is one of the "Evil Organisation" comedy shows (along with the webcomic Evil Inc. and some others) that keep inspiring me to create a contact and match-making service for villains, henchmen, heroes and sidekicks. Any of you heard of those guys that RL walk around their home town dressed up as super heroes and patrol the streets as a neighbourhood watch? What they need is some equally dressed up nemesis to arch them.

The venture Brothers show /the boys and invincible cartoon give you each a different form of what real likes superheroes and villain will be like The venture Brothers just sit at the top because all of their characters at least 90% of them feel like real people as the seasons went on

I don't think it's supposed to be a shadow. I think it was supposed to be ashes from when Dean released Cody (Human Torch parody) and set fire to Impossible Industries.
They're such different shows I wouldn't feel right picking one over the other. But I grew up with all the stuff venture Bros satires and been watching it 15 years so it has such a place in my heart that it gets nastalgia points
It really is fascinating learning about the whole arch system. Like imagine seeing marvel and DC heroes doing something like this. What really gets me is the whole EMA ratings. Like with Victor Von Helping/Hellfire. He could totally be a higher ranked hero with the kind of power he’s got but he stays where he is cause he prefers not to fight at all. And then there’s Red Death. He lives in a nice house and can clearly support his family yet he only arches once a year. This makes me wonder what levels heroes like Superman or Spider-Man would be. Would the Joker be level 10? And what about outer villains like Galactus and Braniac? Would they not be allowed on earth unless they agree to arch?(not that they’d listen but still..)
Monarch went from a one note villain to a legit villain then a midlife crisis then went to what he was destined to be a anthero to where he do bad and good
