Old logging camps are one of the most interesting things about cruising the West coast for me - probably because I lived in one as a kid. The original stuff is long grown over, but the areas are often being logged again for second or third growth, and the roads re-opened. If you're lucky you can find the occasional piece of old equipment, or the remains of a camp. The buildings are usually gone, but the shops tend to leave a footprint. A big cement floor and years of diesel and oil and God-knows-what spilled (or dumped) around the area tend to inhibit the regrowth.

I saw Venture in Coal Harbour about a month ago. I was walking along the seawall and noticed a beautiful yacht in the marina. I started to look at it a bit closer and thought "wow, this looks quite familiar". After looking at the name on the stern I got so excited, my friends had no idea why, so I explained and had them take a picture of me with Venture in the background. I quite enjoy your videos in the PNW.

When I was a little boy as far back as I can recall, our family vacationed on Gabriola Island in B.C. My Mom was Canadian, and we would stay in the family cabin and visit Her parents just down the road. My Mom showed me the wonderment of Sandstone Beaches, Calm Oceanic Waters and Tiny Life forms in the Tidal Pools there. There is even a False Narrows between Gab. Is. and Mudge Island with a pretty fast flow when the Tide changes from low to high and back. Thanks Mom for opening my eyes to a place on this planet that holds a significant place in my Heart...

Tony - Thanks for another most excellent video. I'm trying to convince my son to buy a Fleming and take us for cruises such as this, but I'm not sure how that will work out. Our Cape Dory Typhoon Senior isn't quite up to the task but, we live in hope. Could you tell me what camera you are using for your work? As are many, I am grateful to be a vicarious crew member on your trips. David Attenborough need look no further for his replacement.

I have been a sailor since I was a boy in the West of Scotland and have sailed most of Europe and the Med. This in small keel boats but at seventy it is getting harder by the year, old hips don't help. I stood high in the park in Vancouver looking north a few years ago and so wished I my little yacht was not in Europe. I would have loved to have explored BC and beyond, thanks for bringing it closer for us. Maybe a big lottery win and I can hang up my genoa a buy a Fleming to enjoy my retirement in a bit more comfort. 😀

Well, we do not seek out nasty weather. It is really just a matter of what we consider safe and not too uncomfortable. When we crossed Dixon Entrance the weather was from aft which gave us a comfortable ride. Had we been coming south we would definitely have waited.

Will be exploring next year around May to September from Seattle to Jeneau Alaska, Florida boy, so excited but a little nervous about the big weather and seas! Thoughts and or recommendations much appreciated!, New Subscriber love your videos!
@FlemingYachts
@FlemingYachts Год назад
There is nothing to be afraid of. In many ways it is safer than Florida because the only hazards are natural and not man made, Take the Inside Passage which almost everyone does. The only places this is not fully protected waters is Queen Charlotte Sound north of Vancouver Island, a short distance just north of Bella Bella and Dixon Entrance between Prince Rupert and Ketchikan. Be sure to have cruising guides by Douglas and Waggoner. Pay attention to the weather forecasts.
@FlemingYachts
@FlemingYachts Год назад
The few places that have rapids need to be negotiated at slack water which does not occur at tidal high or low water but when water levels are equal. So have access to tide and current tables. Starlink is a huge benefit for communication. Most of the route is in protected waters. Just pay attention to the weather and the tides and it is very simple. People have done it in kayaks and on paddle boards.

@FlemingYachts
@FlemingYachts Год назад
It seems it is impossible to make videos suitable on every system that viewers use to watch them. On this video I kept the music level quieter than ever before and the volume of the music has been lowered during voice over to it being barely audible on every piece of equipment that I own and I always check this before uploading the video.

Do you make passages using a single engine? Some of your wake shots seem to suggest that.
@FlemingYachts
@FlemingYachts Год назад
No we don't. The only time I did was when the boat was brand new and we had to drive 800 nm from Juneau back home on one engine due to an experimental idea that turned out not to work. The boat ran fine but, much to my surprise, running on one engine at the same speed as we normally run on two actually burnt more fuel. There is no advantage to run on one of two available engines.
@citetez
@citetez Год назад
The only thing that could improve the videos for me would be the inclusion of a little more background music from the MANs. Not a lot, just dangle a mic over the transom occasionally.
