@@_WhoAmI. 7 grand slams and being the most famous active player currently in the WTA should grant her a wildcard to every tournament. She gets bums in seats, she is $$$ for tournament organisers.

Serena and Roger could easily be playing right now but they don't want to lose in the first round of every tournament they enter.

On some of these points, Venus was able to compensate with pinpoint placement and her acumen at the net. Not enough, though. Still, a remarkable player and inspiration.

The movement definitely is problematic. She's much slower than in her prime. Her serves also look very spinny and weak.

The only problem Venus had in this match is that she is too old.

Venus is done for singles, but she could win some GS in doubles and mixed doubles

its not her fitness; its age related wear and tear on the knees, the ankles the hips from years of top level tour competition, plus she has had an immune disease that saps her energy for decades.

@milvao3400 she's an inspiration because of her amazing athleticism and ability well into her 40s, and how many other athletes in their 40s can compete (Venus was close to winning this match) at this level? So, really, among 40 year old plus athletes, Venus is still in the 99.9 percentile of ability.

@@cw9285 she's not competing, she's been asking for wild cards and losing first round matches for a while now. Kimiko Date was a player who had a good carreer in singles after 40, she came back at 38 (had previously retired at 26) and played until 47 but she was good enough to mantain her ranking consistently in the top 100 or even top 50 from 2009 to 2015 (aged 39-45) so she had the right to play in GS tournaments and most WTA tournaments, and she played qualifying and ITFS when necessary. Venus is world no.500 at the moment. Based on the ranking, she couldn't even play GS qualifying. Her ranking has been low for years, despite being given several opportunities (wildcards) to play these big tournaments and win lots of points by winning a smaller number of matches, which she has never done. Her fitness is not enough to play at this level, she could play doubles, which requires mainly tactics and techincal skills and not movement, but she keeps playing and losing first round singles matches. I really hope she plans to stop at after the US Open. What she's doing now doesn't make justice to her amazing carreer and what she has accomplished in the past.

She reached 2nd round only once this year. She is just an example of special treatment.

her fitness is not there anymore. there are a lot of balls that she shout make and you can clearly see that she is to old and cannot move like she used to so the fans that whatched you for so many years contunie to be dissaponted and you take wild card instead of a hungry young players. you need to understand that playing in such a high level and these kind of tournaments is a proffesion and not a hobby.

You seem to suggest an Affirmative type program for tennis.

Do you knwo what would be inspirational? If she played qualifying.

@@Johnmili4565 Regardless of what the tournament does and how many tickets she sells, (not many, her game isn't what it used to be unfortunately and she always play only one match). If her goal is to be inspirational and playing seriously, why she doesn't prove she can still do it by making it through qualifying or building her ranking winning ITF matches. She has already played a lot as a WC and she couldn't win any points, so she still need WC to play. What she is doing is not inspirational at all. Svitolina was inspirational, coming back after becoming a mom just last October and beating the world n.1 at Wimbledon. Wozniacki, I'm sure she'll be top 50 by the end of the year. What Venus is doing is just pointless.... showing up at an event, taking her 1st round prize money, giving rude answers to journalists asking why she's still playing and about retirement, and onto the next first round loss. I hope she retires after the US Open, not because I don't like her but because I liked her a lot when she was competitive. Or I hope to see her in ITFs and qualifying draws.

At this point probably she doesn't care about career or titles anymore, is mostly about doing what she loves to do.

@@teoc8124 Yes, then why on the WTA tour? Why not ITF qualifying tournaments? It's still tennis and competition, if that's what she wants to do and enjoys. And at one point, if these wildcards are useless, meaning she cannot win matches to get her "real" ranking back faster, then leave them to young deserving players who also need prize money to make a living out of tennis after years of sacrifices. And if you're Venus Williams, with all that you have accomplised, "she won a match" cannot be the headline nor the inspiration to anybody.

people buy tickets and come to see the legendary Venus, and not a noname young girl lol And this is one of the principles of issuing a wild card. It's always been that way and it's absolutely right.

She has passion for the game and is still playing good enough to compete with the best even though winning those games is getting harder and harder.She needs to improve her fitness, but having dealt with serious injury for six months this year,quite frankly she is doing pretty well.

Serena is another story. Serena was competitive even in her last tournament. Venus has won 6 matches in three years.
