Wonderful job by both soloists. Lopardo has such a clear ringing voice even if he swallows his sound a bit at times. Pape is of course a master of all basses.

Mr. Lopardo is a fantastic artist!!! Beauty of tone, nuance and requisit power. Beautiful. Ditto for Mr. Pape. I wish I could have heard this live. Why the Met does not use Mr. Lopardo any more, I cannot understand. He is an artist in the old tradition.

Lopardo can dance too! He was absolutely sensational in Italian Girl. He sang wonderfully, jumped around the stage, and kept breaking into a little dance. He was the most joyous performer in a comic opera I've ever seen. I was singing in a local Boheme at the time and our Rodolfo kept raving about Lopardo's singing. He couldn't beleive it. Get his Semiramide recording.

Actually Lopardo even remarked himself in an interview for the Lyric Chicago discovery series podcast that he will never sing the heavier verdi and Puccini tenor roles (i.e. otello and Dick Johnson). Frank Lopardo is a full lyric tenor who knows his limitations, and this is why he is such a great artist. A wonderful musician with an intelligent head on his shoulders.

I think I'm in love with this tenor. He was born late 1950's (58?) and is still singing today (though mostly in American houses)--more proof of that "bulletproof technique". I do wish he'd made the time to become more famous back in the 90's, though--the world seriously needs tenors like him today, and he had the rare combination of looks and talent. I think there's still a video of his Traviata in '94 with Gheorghiu on RU-vid, though. Of course, his Ingemisco is lovely.

Such a high level of music-making. I shall look up the ladies' contributions.

this was in memory of Princess Di, and Solti was to conduct, but he passed away shortly before.

Great! Thanks so much. He's really is, as you know, one of the great singers of our time. I'm looking forward to his Wotan, if that's still on the boards,, I hope.

This was the first time I've ever heard him sing. So my first impression, was that he was more a lyric tenor than a spinto. But he doesn't seem to have any problems with verdi.... of course as always it's a matter of taste, but i think we all agree that Pape is absolutely great here. best regards

The clip is beautiful but Lopardo's "statuens in parte dextra" is worth gold.

She is Michele Crider. Sings a lot all over the place (also here in Berlin). BIG career!

Thanks so much for this clip. I've been looking for a video of the entire concert for many years. Does anyone know where I could get (buy) one?

Because he is famous now, not because he has the voice for it.

I'm surprised that I've never heard of him. He has a very solid technique! he'd be good in Wagner too I think, in dramatic roles.

I heard Pape sing King Mark in Tristan and Isolde maybe 15-20 years ago at Lyric Opera of Chicago. He was magnificent.

yes I agree. hes great, but i dont know if hes the right voice for this repertoire. thats why i was astonished in the second part of his aria, when he really shows voice. btw: your comment wasn't rude at all. Good to see that some people on youtube know how to argue politely

You posted this comment three years ago. You say Kaufmann "wouldn't have hope in hell singing Wagner". Time to eat your words. I keep the recent Met Ring cycle on my TV set top box disk drive. I listened to Kaufmann's Siegmund for the third time last night. He's the best in the world in that role now that Vickers has retired and Domingo went baritone.

Lol! Kaufmann is one of the best ever to sing Wagner...

Lopardo is a funny guy. Literally. I saw him in Italian Girl and Daughter. He's an excellent comic actor. I saw Florez last season in Daughter. Lopardo was much better if only because he's audible. He's very good here too. So is Pape.

Let me help you. I heard Lopardo when he was still doing Rossini and Donizetti. He had an unusual voice. Quite dark but very flexible and easy High Cs. He was terrific on stage in Italian Girl. In Daughter he overpowered Kathleen Battle. BTW I heard Florez in this role last season. Florez has almost no voice. Lopardo obviously could move to heavier roles. Another Rossini Tenor Gregory Kunde just this year moved from the Rossini Otello to the Verdi. It can happen.

Patrick Boyle Speaking of dark but flexible and easy high c's, high notes for this matter, Arthur Espiritu is another tenor to watch. I think it's because both Lopardo and Espiritu study with the same teacher, Dr. Robert C. White.

Cool mullet on Pape. Billy Ray Cyrus would be proud. He can enter the competition with Thomas Hampson and Roberto Alagna for best hear (though I think that Samuel Ramey has them all beat for longevity)
@ddevicente

I agree, but maybe he can do it justice artistically even though he is not the optimal in terms of being a heldentenor or not.

@Agorante

Jesus. I'm going to defend Pavarotti? Everyone always attacks me for my Pavarotti comments. I love Lopardo but Pavarotti was more famous for good reasons. Lopardo sang higher and was more flexible. Their voices were similar sized. Pavarotti was poor on stage and Lopardo was great. But Lopardo's voice is too dark for most tastes. Pavarotti had a conventional but sensationally beautiful voice. He's exactly the voice for Boheme. He sounds great on a CD. He sounded like an Italianate Björling.

If Caruso were alive today he couldn't even get into a young artist program. OVERDARKENING INDEED.

Lopardo does some nice things, though at full volume he tends to push. And at some places he does darken artificially.I believe he can have a freer sound if he avoids some artificial darkening and spreading of tone. Its like he is trying to be Lanza. Why?
