Ortiz (19-0, 19 KO) simply outclassed McKinson (22-1, 2 KO), whose lack of punching power ultimately sealed his fate, despite displaying commendable boxing skills and resilience against Ortiz's onslaught. However, McKinson couldn't withstand Ortiz's relentless pressure, succumbing particularly to body shots which visibly drained him.
The fight reached its climax when McKinson was sent crashing to the canvas from a devastating body shot in the eighth round, and ultimately succumbed in the ninth. Additionally, McKinson appeared to suffer from a potential leg or knee issue, prompting his corner to throw in the towel.
This marked Ortiz's return to the ring after a year, following the postponement due to medical concerns earlier in March. Despite the hiatus, Ortiz exhibited sharpness and seemed unfazed by rustiness, though he remained characteristically humble about his performance.
"Honestly, I don't think I did anything particularly well in the first seven rounds; I had to make significant adjustments. I should have heeded my corner's advice from the start," reflected Ortiz.
"I felt like I had him figured out in the first round, but deviated from the plan. My corner had a solid game plan, my father admonished me for several rounds, and eventually, I listened, leading to the stoppage."
Emphatically, Ortiz expressed his readiness for a world title shot. The bout served as a WBA eliminator, and Ortiz also ranks as a top contender with the WBO. While he didn't specifically call out Terence Crawford, who was present at the event, Ortiz stated his preparedness for such a challenge if the opportunity arises.
