Just outside of Burlington, VT walking along the Winooski River, heading towards the Winooski Falls. We walk past the Woolen Mill and the Champlain Mill both historic landmark buildings. Continuing along the river towards the Nature Trail.
Winooski City is located immediately north of Burlington VT, and is the most densely populated municipality in northern New England. The Abenaki called this area Winooski which means “the wild onion land,” for the abundant onion-like leeks that grew wild there. The river itself they called Winooskitook, or “the wild onion river.”
Winooski One is a hydroelectric generating station located on the Winooski River as it flows between the cities of Burlington and Winooski. The station consists of a rubber dam abutting a historic timber crib dam. A fish lift and riverside park were also constructed as part of the station.
The Woolen Mill was an actual operating mill, which was part of the American Woolen Mills. The building was built in 1881.
The Champlain Mill was built in 1910 and was powered by the Winooski River, producing wool sold by the American Woolen Company. The Mill closed in 1954.
