Ingenious!! I love seeing the moves (with the names!!!) from the front and the back, to music and for more than just 1 go. Not new to swing dancing, but new to Lindy & this is just invaluable. This is incredible. Thank you so much for your encouragement and for this resource. I’m really hoping to practice dancing more, since my town usually only has one night a week where I can meet up with people and dance. Solo jazz has revolutionized both my appreciation of jazz and my ability to dance creatively with a partner. This video is great to help me remember all the names and look them up.
This explanation of which solo jazz moves start on 8 vs. 1 is spot on. It's something that has always confused me. Really like the even vs. odd clarification as well. I'm writing this stuff down! Thanks again Laura!
Yay!! I feel like it goes along with the spirit of "it was just dancing." Like the old timers didn't count, but they definitely knew what that move emphasized.

When you did the rock, it reminded me of Madeline belt, she did her little rock move in the movie paradise in Harlem. she looked so cute when she did it... it's on RU-vid, her little dance part is 37 minutes into the movie, she was a cute little cotton club girl, LOL... you really do know your jitterbug stuff huh.
This is awesome! As a mostly lead, sometimes follow Lindy Hopper, these solo moves will add a lot of spice to the dances :) Did some solo classes, but without repetition kinda forgot about em.

hello, I am impressed by the so many terms and names for moves. Do you believe thaty date 1920or so, or are they more recent tendency? I tend to notice that dancers and musicians do not really share the same language, I donot think a jazzman will count 6 for instance, but may be I am wrong. Watching all of your videos while in hospital, dreaming of daays I will be able to go dance again ! thanks
Are there lead vs follower moves. Like, I would find these moves for the lead as well as for the follower? I'm a guy, I would do moves just like these?
Wow! What a great presentation. Such fun dynamics! But... I've been learning Lindy for a few years and Solo for a year and I still get lost regarding the start-beat stuff. Is the idea that moves that start on 1 shouldn't be followed by a move that starts on 8? Is a kickballchange meant to use up, like, a beat'n'a'half so we can change gears? I'm aware of all the counting. It's in all the classes. But I am a slow learner and get lost. Is there a simple explanation? Thanks!
Hey! Yeah, it's easy to get lost with this stuff. Moves that start on 1 can be followed by moves that start on 8 and vice versa. There's no rule about what order the moves should go in or how many of each kind you should do. The kick-ball of the kick-ball-change is 1 beat. So if you're doing a shorty george, and you start on 8, the first step of your shorty will be on count 1. You CAN use a kick-ball-change to switch from even beats to odd beats, but in general I feel like it's baked into the step it's attached to, and isn't generally transition step. I made a video on an easy way I transition from even beats to odd beats. Such an old video at this point. @@LauraGlaess ... thx! i'm an infamously slow but stubborn learner. so a step that starts on 8 must end on 7? then if you wanted to follow it w a step that starts on 1 you'd want a 1-beat move that uses up the missing beat? i've been learning steps during this whole Zoom era, and following choreographies (not remembering any), and am wondering how to string things together. i more like just mush em together when playing around on my own. ...the crazier thing is that i'm starting to show the basics to other ppl. i dont really know what i'm doing but nobody else knows more who is willing to help so we just wing it.

Imagine creating similar content about classical music and donating half the money to some "White art association" because Mozart and Beethoven were white?!? I appreciate that the channel is helpful, and that you think I should get paid for it ;) The way I see it, Mozart and Beethoven get lots of credit for creating their art (and are kind of the preferred default when it comes to what "good art" is and what "proper music theory" is). Also, white people, for the most part, are doing just fine. They are VERY well represented in the classical music world and don't need any extra help. However, a lot of people don't know that Lindy Hop was born out of Black culture. I think it's important to say it because Black people deserve credit for making such an amazing dance. Also, Black people are not very well represented in the Lindy Hop world - a world that, again, the elders of their community created. Now how do we fix this? Outreach, education, representation? I don't know, but you know who has a better idea than I do? Organizations that specialize in it. So they get my money, because I love Lindy Hop, and I think Black representation in it is important
@@LauraGlaess Let's agree to disagree. I'm a lindy-hop and boogie-woogie dancer from France and in my country 10 million french people live in poverty, out of 67 million people. You can guess my astonishment when i read "white people, for the most part, are doing just fine". Giving credit to someone because of his skin color, instead of his character must be an american tradition that i won't criticize as a foreigner. Once again, thank you for your excellent work!
