Official Roland Livestream from 2/18/21 featuring Recloose, Coolout, and Zeale. Preview of the Zenbeats integration, Coolout's Verselab album, Zeale interview and exclusive remix made for the show.
I'm a cubase user and in last 3 years owned mpc live & mc707, Elektrons sp404a etc and love them all. But this so much closer to what i envisaged. The vocal tracks over segments has limitations (12mins mono), but coupled with zen beats gui is simply game changer. I'm saving up for one. I wont sell the others they're all good at different things. But very impressed Roland.
Thankyou for putting together. Really enjoyed the different approaches and the energy. I hope that this little box gets some love. to me its a nintendo switch compared to PS5. no 4k60fps but a lot more portable and fun and about the gameplay rather than the graphics. the zenbeats app is so slick.... really supports fast working / arrangement....but I could use some tips.... my transitions between sections / sequences feel like a person lurching from lifebelt to lifebelt in rough sea and getting the timing and levels of vocal clips against the music takes quite a bit of practice, also maybe expand on the collaborative side of it?
Chris I got what you were doing for the first time - copying the clips from section to section then using random to give you some variation. thankyou for the idea and also I think you came up with creating a project just to deposit your favourite sounds onto the instruments to then be used as a favourites folder you can easily access from any other project. youre a great champion for the verselab.
I’m a 72 year old singer songwriter who writes with acoustic guitar as my main instrument am I going to use the system to carry on writing and recording
That freaked me out i was making a track with this playing in the background and when i stopped playing the section the sound kept playing. But you were using the same or similar sound, i love it when shit like this happens.
@@BoombapArt Thats great to know. I'm not the heaviest sampler but i do my fair share of sampling. I like the design/concept of the MV vs other grooveboxes for my personal taste. The fact that the sample editing doesn't cripple the MV is good to hear from your perspective. Thanks u.
Great vid. Question.... can I use the onboard effects in real time with my guitar via the stereo inputs. I looked all throughout the manual and I understand you can apply the effects to mastering and also to the mic input but I couldn't find anything about the instrument input and if you can apply the effects in real time. It would be amazing because there's all kinds of Boss pedals in this thing. Thanks again
Great informative live session. I'm waiting for mine the days to come. I will be using it to make electro jazz stuff, with my archtop guitar, bass, analog synth, Rhodes plugged in to sample small sequences I'll step sequence on Drum&Bass break beats. I've got an important question in that regard. The Verselab can sample whatever you feed it. Ok. But what about low impedance instruments like guitars, bass, dobro, etc..? There is no Hi-z option. So how can you proceed to get the correct output power in the Verselab inputs? Thanks very much for all the help
If you looking for specific classic JV patches I think they're all in Roland Cloud since you have virtual JV, XV, and SRX expansion plug ins. The Zen-Core engine is basically the latest generation of that Roland ROMpler style synthesis. Zen-Core and the new SDZ expansions should cover all those bases pretty handily.
Can the wav files be directly exported from the verselab to the PC or is an HD card reader needed? Not a deal breaker but it would be nice if the PC recognized verselab lab as a storage device
Yeah, there's a 'storage mode' you can activate that turns it into a class-compliant USB card reader. Just shows up on your computer like any other storage device. It even works with phones and tablets if you want to transfer samples to or upload your finished songs online.
Great to hear about the Zenbeats v2.1 integration. Does it mean the generic USB class compliant audio out will soon allow multi-track rather than just the stereo mix down ?
From what I understand, Zenbeats is remotely controlling the Verselab to give it a graphical front end, so the MV audio isn't actually being routed through or processed by Zenbeats at this point. That may change as they add more features to the integration.
@@cooloutbeats Thx, noticed that on the explanation, however I also saw "track stem bouncing" not sure what it means, is it bouncing tracks from ZenBeats as MV-1's loops or the other way ? or both ? If it's the MV-1 to ZenBeats way, I assume it would also mean each track available separately in generic mode. kinda of a bummer as far as I'm concerned the way generic mode is implemented right now.
@@jayneural There's a whole list of different features on the Zenbeats roadmap. They'll roll out incrementally. With that said, my personal opinion is the Verselab works great as a standalone box as it's designed to do the whole song production from start to finish. Everything else is just a bonus really. I have plenty of iOS devices, all the popular apps, desktop plugins, etc., but don't really feel the need to transfer my Verselab tracks over to another DAW. It's more fun to see what I can do with one device since there's so much already inside.
@@cooloutbeats It's true that the VL1 is stunningly capable cover the whole workflow, including vocals and mastering. That's quite impressive and gets me really thinking after I paid over $1K for an M+. I'm getting snubbed on NI forums when I'm begging for auto-pitch/vocoder type of features :) I love Roland's sounds and own many products from the brand. So I'd probably use it as a multi-timbral rompler part of a setup in addition to standalone beat-making tool, to bring it in setups with analog synths or some of other excellent iOS apps (AUM with along with AuV3 synths/FX). Hopefully multi-track generic USB audio will come with a future firmware. It would be even more welcome on Roland's other synths and drum-boxes which are less of do-it-all devices. At least there aren't limits I'm aware of on the USB Class Compliant standard disallowing them to do that. They made moves in that direction for the MC 101/707 recent firmware updates, so let's see. As for ZenBeats integration, that's killer, kinda compensates for the small built-in screen and hence lack of visual feedback. Would be nice if they implemented a waveform view on ZenBeats when sampling/trimming/slicing on the VL1.
Hello great work!! Quick question..can you use the KICK,SNARE,HI HAT,tracks for INSTRUMENTS??for instance i see theres only 3 melodic tracks but can i put lets say some keys in the Kick track or snare and hi hat tracks and use as melodic Tracks??
@@cooloutbeats awesome thank you for replying. i get mine on wensday cant wait.and last question lol..can you use USB Keyboard? or it has to be midi? thank you in advance.1love
You probably dont give a shit but does any of you know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid lost my password. I appreciate any help you can give me!
@Ares Crosby I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Hi - Is there anyway to apply the pre installed looper sounds across a song ? I can install them so they are within a section but there's no way I can get them to copy over to another section (or copy as a clip without any other instruments) or am I doing something wrong here ? Thanks
@@cooloutbeats Hi and thanks for your reply. I've got it now. I think I wasn't setting Inst 1 and 2 to 'Looper' first and kept getting memory full messages. However they're now copying over fine as a clip. Great !
Why do my samples repeat and fade out? I load a sample into a clip, but when its triggered it slowly fades out before the end of the sample. And it also retrigs when it finishes….
The class schedule for next quarter has been posted yet. You should get an email with an invite when you register your unit. www.roland.com/us/roland_cloud_academy/synth_aira/
They both share the same Zen-Core engine and base presets, but the Fantom has additional synth engines, features, and options. There are reasons the Fantom is 5 times the price.
@@cooloutbeats For instance, if I use a preset from the "Synth Pad" bank on channel "instrument 1". Then decide to change the preset, the MV-1 remembers the currently used preset and opens up directly on THAT preset when opening back the folder of "Synth Pad" bank. When working with .WAVS and doing the exact same process - the MV-1 does NOT remember what preset is currently loaded from the folder and opens up at the start of the bank on the first preset within the .WAV folder. If I have for instance 120+ .wav presets in that folder. It's a bit of a setback by having to scroll all the way through from the beginning on the 1st preset when the folder could of opened up directly on the currently used (loaded) .wav which would in return save me time and I would know where I left off previously when I was browsing through the sounds. Thank you for replying Coolout
@@cooloutbeats Niiiice! can't wait to see in action. Quick question: do you know if Verselab audio-in will show-up as an audio source in iPAD? In other words, it has usb-audio as I understand for the atomic track of the device, so can audio-in be routed to iOS as well.
@@samprock The Verselab uses a generic driver mode with an iPad, so it functions as a 2-in, 2-out audio interface. Essentially the stereo master output including the audio inputs would be sent to the iPad.
@@cooloutbeats man, that's like dreams come true! I don't need an extra iOS compatible interface (use UAD Apollo). So can hook Verselab, two synths and iPad for a simple iPad/synth standalone setup. .... i understand, it is not 8 pairs for each track, too bad. But could capture Verselab project audio into any iOS DAW and while device can host iPad/synth as an audio interface. Also acting as a midi controller same time (sequencing other iOS synths). And send extra synth line made on iOS back to Verselab pad... This beats my current workflow with OP-Z.
Is there a way to speed up sample editing start and end points other than using holding shift. It takes FOREVER. Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Sp404 is faster
+Shift is pretty much it for now. I'd try sampling in smaller chunks and using the different record triggers, especially if you're re-sampling (use CLOCK). You'll get quicker with it in time. A lot of folks think the SP way is slow.
Unfortunately it's a single input at time. The mic input, stereo line, or internal mic. You choose between the inputs. On the plus side it keeps you from accidentally recording signals into the vocal takes. You can always record something into a looper track or vocal take first first as a backing track.
@@cooloutbeats Damn, I was hoping I could be able to monitor my external synth while still being able to record vocals. That looper workaround might not be too bad though. Thank you for this clarification, you’ve been doing great work and it’s very much appreciated ✨
@@luciousfl0w No prob. You could also sample your synth riffs and assign them to a drum kit pad or tone track if you wanted more layers than the 2 looper tracks. There's an option to record a sample at the start of the sequence (called 'clock') so it plays in time automatically.
Very interesting and informative video. How would you rate the Verselab MV-1 against the MPC One? I'm having a difficult time making a decision on which one to buy. I will go with whichever one is the most user friendly. Can you give me a little help, I've never had either of them. ThanQ!
As far as user-friendly, I don't think any gear has developed a system as easily laid out as the Verselab's workflow strip. I'm not an MPC One owner (although I have some older MPCs). From what I've seen the MPC One and Verselab are very different machines. Different feature sets, uses, and strengths. MPCs in general are designed to be a hub for connecting multiple hardware. A lot features and complexity comes with that. The Verselab is designed to be an all-in-one song production studio. It guides you step-by-step from idea to finished song including the vocals with no other gear needed (aside from a microphone and headphones of course). Ultimately, it dependa on your setup and what you want to do. The Verselab isn't designed for jamming with tons of other gesr, designing synth patches/sample libraries all day, or live performance...it's there to finish songs as easily and quickly as possible.
@@cooloutbeats ThanQ for your response, I did go pick up the Verselab MV-1 and will be attending a Zoom Tutorial tonight.! I'm truly excited about getting back into my flow, I just didn't know where to start. I really appreciate what you guys do! ThanQ
On the Verselab product page you can download a factory content pack that includes the original demo projects, newer genre templates, loops, and samples. Some of them created by me I might add.
When live sampling external input or resampling from internal tracks you can auto-slice based on volume level, then assign slices to a drum kit pad or chromatically across a Tone track.
How do you find the sample start and end point editing experience in the Verselab? I've heard from other users it's not the best, do you think they will address it in firmware update?
there's different scales on moving thru a sample with the knobs for small to large resolutions via shifted key strokes/modes - see the manual on their website for details
@@cresshead I've heard that even with that it's still difficult. I'm trying to hear from somebody who uses it to find out their opinion on the sample editing ease/difficulty
@@yepuh8828 if you are looking for a fully fledged sampler with great workflow you're looking at the wrong product... much like looking at the mpc live as a fully fledged synthesiser is also the wrong product. verselab is a fanstactic groovebox with a great synth engine that can also do some sampling.. it's not a 'sampler' first and foremost.
Not sure. The bit-rate during recording is not in the specs. Considering you can import 16, 24, or 32-bit WAV it could be anything. There's no option to choose recording quality either. I wouldn't mind a lo-fi recording mode like on the SP-series to squeeze out more recording time.
@@cooloutbeats That lofi/extended sampling feature would be great. Maybe you cd use a lil of your influence to get them to add that, if thats possible lol
There’s no undo. My workflow is to make a copy every time i’m satisfied, but want to try changes or move to the next step in the workflow strip. When sequencing you have 16 clip slots. It’s easy to do the copy shortcut (copy button + a pad) to make a little backup of the clip. Then if you mess up, copy it back over the same way. Basically a human undo. I also make sure to save numbered versions of a project as I move across the workflow strip, so ‘songname 1’ will be the sequences, ‘songname 2’ will be the sequences plus song arrangement, ‘songname 3’ will be with vocals added…and on and on. It’s also smart to backup up the SD card to a computer every now and then.
What mics are you using? Did you check your cables? I've tested a variety of mics with the Verselab: dynamics like a SM58, tube large condensers using phantom, small solid-state pencil mics, even a measurement mic. They all sounded fine. No issues at all with the pre-amps over here.
@@acethemcacethemc1491 Check your gain staging. Since the Verselab is designed to be a standalone recorder (not just a sound module), there's a bunch of different gain/volume parameters at each stage of the workflow to maintain headroom (so things don't clip). There are separate volume levels per Tone, per Clip, per Track, then a master level per song (edit + song), plus gains in the multi-band compressor and final limiter. All this happens before the volume pot and none are at maximum by default.
@DJCOOLOUT I have my verseslab i have to register it then ill be there to learn all your tricks i hope when i arrive you dont get tired of me and we can connect. So hyped right now..
