I don't think Hamilton underestimated Perez, in the very beginning of 2021, he said that much harder for Mercedes when Perez joined Redbull. Here, Perez have nothing to lose and Hamilton do not want too aggressive on Perez and crash each other out, and lose the championship.
@footballnerd277
@footballnerd277 2 года назад
The key ending to the race was that Verstappen had enough of a gap to the car behind him, to get a free pitstop whilst retaining his track position. Hamilton didn't, hence he couldn't afford to pit. And the reason why he didn't have enough of a gap, was because of the time he lost when overtaking Perez. If he'd been smart and overtaken Perez after the DRS detection zone. Pause the video at 7:32. You can see Hamilton overtook Perez just before the DRS detection line. This meant Perez got DRS and was able to come back at Hamilton and overtake him. Which then enabled him to back up Hamilton and cost him time during the tight, twisty part of the track. If Lewis had been clever, he would have overtaken Perez after the DRS line. Got the move done on that lap. And not lost anywhere near as much time. Had he done that, he would have been far enough ahead of Max to pit under the safety car and retain track position. So to sum up, his eagerness to overtake Perez before the DRS line, cost him the world championship!

Hamilton was charging his battery (which slows you down) and all of a sudden Max was there. He was charging to get away already when Max squeezed him and forced a poor exit out of the corner. Max watched Hamilton charge so he concentrated on his exit and spent the rest of the straight weaving to break the tow. No one can tell what they'd do if they were in the same position, but one thing I'd say is that I wouldn't have worried about charging the battery right then and there.

Controversy aside, if we were to look at Verstappen's 1 lap attack to fight for the world championship, I think a lot of people missed that after the overtake, he positioned his car perfectly for the rest of the lap. He position his car to take the inside line in turn 6 and again in turn 9, the 2 best opportunities for Hamilton to retake the lead to prevent him possibly taking the inside and pushing him wide or putting him in a compromised position to take contact. He knew his tire advantage could take the more aggressive line and drove accordingly knowing the strengths in areas of the circuit. That is why I think Verstappen is really a championship caliber driver.

I also think Lewis should've never left the door open at the hairpin. Had he been ahead on the straight, he could've managed to stay in front with the Mercedes' straight-line speed and by closing the door on the inside. Max had a massive grip advantage. So I knew he was going to divebomb inside the hairpin. Lewis shouldn't have allowed that. Also, I believe that Lewis didn't put on the gas at the best possible time when restarting the race after SC. He could've done a better job there. I guess he wasn't ready for a final lap for the title. Everything happened so quickly at the end.

0:36, Vettel did the exact same move there that Verstappen did to Hamilton on lap one, yet I don't see anyone complaining about it! Max was right to say he gets treated differently. His move was perfectly legal, yet you had people saying "he didn't give Hamilton space". Erm, there's no obligation to give him space. The move was on track and legal. Yet for some reason, Hamilton was allowed to retake the position by cutting the corner by about 20 meters. And then the FIA had the audacity to lie to all of us, and claim "Hamilton has given the advantage he gained back".

Sergio was behind Max. If Lewis had tried to stay on the track then he would have lost 2 places in 2 corners. If think he took the right decision. In the worst case, race director would have ask him to give it back and Lewis could have chose the best place to do it. He took a gamble, he won.

Go back and watch it at 11:26. On that last lap on the final pass from Hamilton I noticed that Hamilton uses his front wing to bump into Max' rear right tire ever-so-gently. Everybody in racing knows that's an intentional move to give the other driver a rear right puncture. That part of the front wing is very sharp and often causes punctures to rear tires. I've seen it dozens of times, sometimes on accident and sometimes on purpose, but that one was just gentle enough and perfectly placed to look intentional.
