David got an idea! (Henrik is skeptical) What if you need to jump something with your car but don’t have a ramp? Let us introduce the next invention that will change the automotive industry! Soon everyone will have a rocket jump kit fitted to their car and easily jump over bridges that aren’t finished yet, police blockades and even up to the top floor of car parks.
The Rocket Jump RC car is a 1:10 scale HobbyKing Desert Fox RC car. The rocket used is the same as in the Rocket knife series. Providing 54kg (120lbs) of thrust for 0.4 seconds.
The car weighs about 3kg so you can imagine the results.
Everything goes exactly to plan right up until the actual experiment.

As a machinist by trade Ive gotta say - On youtube you see a lot of dangerous, dumb or otherwise just incorrect methods of machining/ making things. David, you are NOT that way. Good to see someone who knows what they are doing and who takes the time to do things the right way (even if they may not have all the necessary tools) Keep up the good work!

P.S. What about something similar (maybe even just a large rocket with a gopro or two mounted) with a gyro for stability during a vertical launch. Maybe a canard setup to keep the control surfaces away from the blast? Itd be cool to see onboard video of the gyro correcting in flight!

I would have been happy with just that RC he wrecked...:/ Perfect speed for area where i live... For the machines you can build most of them your self. Basic system is like 300€+frame materials.

Next you should strap a rock to an rc airplane... facing the wrong way! Something with an EDF should so nicely. The F.T. Viggen is still hands down still my favorite airplane to build and fly.

YES! I love it. Don't take this the wrong way, but I like this content much more than the rocket knife stuff. Also, could you detail the ignition circuit? I would probably just take an ATTiny or something similar to generate a on-off signal from the PWM signal, which then applies power to the ignition capsule, using a mosfet to not blow up the poor MCU. I'd love to not bother with the design and take a pre-existing solution...

I said JATO, not VTOL :-) Anyways, maybe some testing with thrust vectoring might be in order. Something simple like exhaust vanes maybe, they did the trick for plenty of rockets from the V2 to the Sidewinder. And thanks for keeping us entertained / infotained / learning stuff!

Have you ever thought about using thrust vectoring to keep the car stable in it's flight? I think if you did that, it would probably have a much more stable flight, even over rough terrain.

Maybe if you did this with 3-4 solid rockets layer out so each one points towards the cg (not vertical but like at 70-85°) so it creates some stabilization, like the arms on the s500 frame

Hey David Your rocket jump made me think of the rocket assisted take offs the USAF tested with the Hercules. Maybe you could try that with the cargo plane Peter Sripol designed and some "booster" rockets

You should consider building a jet rc plane that itself flys reasonably fast...but with some rocket boosters that can be switched on... It should be still controllable.. maybe use fpv to fly it :)

I'm not a rocket scientist but the centre of mass and the centre of area are pretty low, hence the unpredictable/random trajectory of the rocket. Plus, the body/wheels of the car work as "fins", increasing the drag and turning the rocket right. That's just my 2 pennies' worth :-)

FYI +David Windestal and others. Fusion360 has cool scripting, I saw you where deleting lines of gcode and copying to illustrator. I was doing same in the start, but took not long to figure out how to edit scripting in F360. I will speed up the design to print. Kind Regards

I would try two smaler rockets on both sides, 45 degree from ground on side, and slightly in an angle towards the center axis. 3 little rockets would give you even more precision, in a pyramid shape towards the desired exit vector. or a rocket in a gimball on top with an aim.
