Vertical Stick Welding - ESAB 7018 vs Hobart 7018 Cut & Etch | Welding Tips & Tricks

This video features uphill stick welding using both ESAB and Hobart 7018 Electrodes at 1/8".
Read the full detailed article on our website here: www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/...
I started off using 120 amps for the first stringer bead and then reduced amperage to 115 once the metal was warmed up. After a total of 6 passes, I did a cut and etch test to reveal the depth of penetration and internal quality of the multi-pass weld. Naval Jelly rust remover can be used for this test also but I used a solution designed for passivation and heat tint removal on stainless steel.

Jody, as a new airline pilot of a regional that is now closing its doors (Express Jet) I want to say thank you for the work you and yours put into these videos. Your years of teaching the public with humility and direction do not go unnoticed. Your 4130 tutorials have been a go to aid for my own Super Cub fuselage build. Your store is outstanding resource as well. Thanks for the top shelf quality and devotion to your trade.............even when you yourself got the short end of the stick by the airlines. Kind Regards.

Hi Jody, have bought my first Tig welder a couple of months ago and am serving my own youtube apprenticeship. Your videos are extremely helpful and the photography is excellent and just this has taught me a lot about what it should look like when i weld. I really like how most of your videos are on real jobs not just two perfect plates stacked together or running a bead on a flat plate which I can do all day, but when it comes to the real deal its all a bit different. So thanks a lot mate from Australia. Love your work.

Before I watched this video, I bought 4 pounds of ESAB 7018. Don’t think I’m in a lot of trouble with it, but I wish you had run a pass at the 5 to 10 Amps higher reading just to see the difference. Time will tell. Great video as usual, thanks for the effort.

I’ve been welding commercially for 22 years now first as a union boilermaker and now for myself, but I try to use Hobart rod whenever I can. The best property I’ve found is the ease at which the slag is removed. It seems to be more of a thin glassy consistency and chips very effortlessly especially in tight corners where esab and Lincoln slag tends to stick like a bear.

I like Hobart 7018 4HR. I find they are worth the extra 7 bucks for a 5 pound box over the Powerweld 7018-1 . One time I mistook a box of 5/32 for a box of 3/32. Man , did I have fun jettin' those bad boys ! I also like Hobart's 6011. My favorite 6011 has to be Lincoln 1/8 ,those with the brown cardboard pulp lookin' flux.They weld easy for a cellulosic rod. I was happy to see you posted today Jody. Thank you !

Hey Jody, Could you possibly make a video using your Lincoln AC225 (or if not on hand another transformer welder like your thunderbolt on AC) using 7018 ac in the vertical up position. I can get a regular 7018 on a dc machine at school pretty flat and even. At home, it seems like with my AC225, the weld doesn't come out as flat and even as the dc welds I would do at school. It seems more lumpy and droops more. Your arc shots really give me a good visual. I think a video on welding with an AC only buzz box in all positions would be really helpful to a lot of people. Many people have them instead of high end welders. Also could I get your opinion on the Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 welder. I have considered it for the dc, although it only puts out 125 amps. It seems like for 1/8 7018, I would need more amps on thicker material. Would a cheap dc inverter welder be a better investment. Although, the Lincoln Ac buzz box runs 7018 ac decently. Thanks for your videos. They are really helpful.

Hobart are good if you never have to do restarts, they create perosity on bottom of pipe on restarts and has happened on sides as well. I would never use Hobart during a test or on an Qc’d weld. Excalabour or air liquide highly preferred.

Jody, just a fart around home welder here, but I swear as I have listened to you repeat the same guidance over and over, it has eventually sunk in. I’ll never be a trade or certified welder in anything, but your teaching is very accessible. Question, I wondered if the esab was getting more heat than the Hobart because the heat from the Hobarts would be creeping up into the esab base metal and beads. Not sure how long things cooled off, but curious if the esab might have been benefitting and if compared side by side, the esab would need even more heat? Thanks again for all your upbeat and thoughtful instruction.
@joelmohr3232
@joelmohr3232 4 года назад
Each manufacturer has their own specifications of the composition of the rod/wire they are producing. Some of it can be a particular heat or lot, some are the different chemical compositions of the manufacturing process, some is the welder and what she or he is doing during the process. It can be as simple as cleanliness or position of, the ground clamp.

I new to welding and have a question, on a 3 bead pass, could you run a bead on both left and right then fill in the middle??? is that wrong or any bad results by doing it that way???
@Brainmalfuction
@Brainmalfuction 4 года назад
Ya you can do it that way but you may run in to a problem with slag entrapment becasue you have a deep valley (depending how you stacked your beads) and the rod may have trouble getting to the bottom of that valley.

Christopher Ortega in Australia 7016 is a lot more commonly used rather than 7018, it’s not that different other than the viscosity of the slag and arc characteristics, used for all the same applications you’d use a 7018 for, I don’t know the ins and outs of as to why we use it over 7018 maybe it’s something to do with AS/NZS 1554.1, look I really don’t know I’m just a first year apprentice who probably knows too much for his own good...

From my experience the Esab rods quality have decreased majorly in last decade sadly :/ Pretty much old Esab rods were the best thing ever now? Somewhat avarage or on some lots below avarage dunno why but that's how I feel... Changed from Esab to other brands that welds better...
