Welcome to the first online meeting of the 23/24 season is here. The Officials Institute Chairman of the Board, Joshua Schroeder, hosts another fantastic meeting which originally aired on July 13, 2023. This video features the meeting topic labeled Jumping Defenders, Verticality Plays. Officials Institute holds monthly meetings the second Thursday of every month with the intentions of providing instruction for basketball officials and help everyone to get better, Watching and discussing videos in a group helps bring awareness to the rules of basketball by providing a platform for attendees to receive instant feedback from fellow officials. Asking questions while analyzing video is a valuable learning tool and by giving repetitive looks at the same play increases retention of rules and philosophies of rules. All videos shown are actual high school basketball videos.
The video of this online meeting includes 7 different video clips, all revolve around the topic of verticality. Watch all the way to the end to see a bonus clip as well.
0:00 - Intro
0:35 - A player drives to the basket and is met by several defenders. Did they have good verticality?
8:57 - Shot attempt right under the basket blocked by a jumping defender. Does the principle of verticality apply here?
18:31 - A drive into a stationary defender who established LGP. How is this a foul? Watch and hear the discussion.
23:33 - Foul called on a rebounding shot but wasn't the defender holding his verticality relatively straight?
29:32 - Trail calls a foul from the division line. Was he correct or did his distance away from the play affect his judgment?
38:00 - Fast break layup broken up by contact with a defender. Watch and see what happened
42:41 - Defender in front and behind the dribbler/shooter. Which one had great verticality? Why did the official blow the whistle? Lots of discussion on this play including some on positioning and angles
55:01 - BONUS CLIP on Basket Interference
Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right.
