Welcome to the first online meeting of the 23/24 season is here. The Officials Institute Chairman of the Board, Joshua Schroeder, hosts another fantastic meeting which originally aired on July 13, 2023. This video features the meeting topic labeled Jumping Defenders, Verticality Plays. Officials Institute holds monthly meetings the second Thursday of every month with the intentions of providing instruction for basketball officials and help everyone to get better, Watching and discussing videos in a group helps bring awareness to the rules of basketball by providing a platform for attendees to receive instant feedback from fellow officials. Asking questions while analyzing video is a valuable learning tool and by giving repetitive looks at the same play increases retention of rules and philosophies of rules. All videos shown are actual high school basketball videos.
The video of this online meeting includes 7 different video clips, all revolve around the topic of verticality. Watch all the way to the end to see a bonus clip as well.
0:00 - Intro
0:35 - A player drives to the basket and is met by several defenders. Did they have good verticality?
8:57 - Shot attempt right under the basket blocked by a jumping defender. Does the principle of verticality apply here?
18:31 - A drive into a stationary defender who established LGP. How is this a foul? Watch and hear the discussion.
23:33 - Foul called on a rebounding shot but wasn't the defender holding his verticality relatively straight?
29:32 - Trail calls a foul from the division line. Was he correct or did his distance away from the play affect his judgment?
38:00 - Fast break layup broken up by contact with a defender. Watch and see what happened
42:41 - Defender in front and behind the dribbler/shooter. Which one had great verticality? Why did the official blow the whistle? Lots of discussion on this play including some on positioning and angles
55:01 - BONUS CLIP on Basket Interference
Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right.

In the first play, you can see at 2:49 that #35 is clearly extending his upper body toward the jumper a bit; #40 is clearly extending his arm toward the jumper, and his body is also moving forward toward the jumper. Both defenders are outside of their defensive cylinders. I think it's clearly a blocking foul on both players.

The play at the 42 min mark, the foul on #33 was correct. He had his hand on the shooter's back the entire time and it affected the shooter when he jumped. Although it doesn't look like much, when the shooter is in the air it caused the contact with the other defender.

@ 12:15, it looks like the L might be straightened to see any body contact or the 'push' that was called.

Play #3. Consider this…Was defender’s arm movement the result of a swat? Or, his body absorbing the contact caused the shooter? The shooter goes thru the defender’s leg and chest. The defender doesn’t jump A to B, but is moved from A to B by the contact of the shooter.

I think these videos highlight how difficult officiating is. Play No. 3 - they all watch and say they have nothing. Should have been no call. You slow it down and show that his arm moved so he was outside his legal guarding position. Also, I think Play No. 2 was a foul as the player reached his hand out as well and made contact with the offensive player. Reffing is hard!!

Play 1 should have been a foul. IMO

I also agree with play 2 being a foul also. Contact to a player shooting the ball should (unless the offensive player created the contact) be a foul.
