Hey Josh, thank you for educating us through videos and explanations, though here we use FIBA rules but we are happy that we can both judge the plays on the same page. Bravo Josh 🤝

It too bad we all can’t work off the same rules set. Thanks for watching.

21:15 prior to the contact, I’ve got a travel on Green 20 with his left foot being the pivot which violated. If the travel wasn’t there, I’ve got blocking on white as he continued to move his body into the path of an airborne player attempting a try. These are the hardest plays for me. More then just block vs charge… I struggle with block vs charge vs travel. This is why I appreciate you hosting these film sessions. Thank you.

Hey Josh, thank you for having these meetings and posting them - they’re very informative and I’m learning a lot as a new official. I’d like to join these meetings live. How do I get involved?

26:48 I’ve got White 21 displacing Blue as W21 moves into Blue’s vertical area. Per rule 4-23-1 “[…] every player is entitled to a spot on the playing court provided such player gets there first without illegally contacting an opponent […]” So when I see players posting up and backing down opponents, if that opponent seems to have fallen, or is even bumped off of their position (unless they willfully back themselves off of it), I’ve got a foul on the player moving into their entitled spot on the court. I do recognize Blue wrapping their left arm around White 21’s left arm, but it is my interpretation that it is a result of him attempting to regain his balance as he is beginning to fall to the floor due to being displaced. I’m going with Team Control Foul on White.

49:05 Hypothetically speaking, if a player is standing perfectly still maintaining legal guarding position, not moving a single part of their body… BUT their arm is extended outwards, it is my opinion that any contact with that arm causes them to be the offender if said contact is deemed to be illegal. Even if an opponent purposefully runs directly into just that arm, with that same opponent being the one to knowingly caused/initiated the contact, I still have the the person with their arm extended being the offender. This ruling is based on my interpretation of 4-23-3-D “raise hands within vertical plane”; 4-24-6 “it is not legal to extend the arms fully or partially in a position other than vertical so that the freedom of movement of an opponent is hindered when contact with the arms occurs”; and 10-7-4 continuing on to say more of the same. While I do recognize the player in this hypothetical situation did legally get to this spot first, isn’t moving, and is thus entitled to this spot on the floor… that only pertains to their body within a vertical plane at that spot, which a horizontally extended arm is not. Now, applying this to the play at 49:05 , even if Red 5 purposefully initiated the contact of his head/neck into White’s extended forearm (I don’t know whether he did or not), I’ve still got to burden White’s arm with being the offender due to these established principles. His arm is extended out, he is not in legal guarding position (both due in part to the arm extension and the forward movement), and the arm has contacted an opponent on the head/neck area. Foul on White. Illegal use of hands. That’s what I would have gone with. I would love to hear more opinions from others on this topic. Thank you again so much for providing this invaluable service to us. I know it is making a measurable difference in my understanding and recognition of how to apply the rules.

You may be right in theory, but that defeats the purpose and intent of the rule. To penalize a player for simply "Standing" does not follow the spirit of the rules. The purpose of this video is to help train the ability to see "what happened" and penalize, or more importantly, not penalize every bit of contact we see accordingly. With 10 players moving around rapidly on the floor, if we were to call ALL contact a foul, we would be out there a long time and have many players foul out, so we must ref "the game."

Looking at that last play, if I see contact to the neck/head/face, I'm going to get my crew together and discuss Flagrant, regardless of time left.

as an official l believe in selected calling when it is reallyl call for .l think we are splitting hair here a little ,sometime this is how we get into jams with leagues and some assigner and media when we let go of a infractions or foul because that call is going to prevent a team from scoring or what the mind set of this player is at the moment he did what he did. for me ,on that play making that call is important and its not going to kill you or the game if you do .if this is a high stake game believe me this call will matter more than others would for the game and your sake.

Play # 2 the refs passed. Both teams are in the bonus, 2nd period. By passing on an obvious foul, you reward the fouling player.
@OfficialsInstitute
@OfficialsInstitute 9 месяцев назад
Maybe, but couldn’t it also be taking an advantage away from the offense?
@deankirkpatrick7658
@deankirkpatrick7658 9 месяцев назад
@@OfficialsInstitute With the bonus already in play I think most coaches would prefer the shots at the line. And an opponent maybe getting in foul trouble. I think this is a case of not only seeing the whole play, but the whole of the game as well.

Last play 51:00, 1 point game, 2 seconds on the clock, red #5 was attempting to set a screen. I thought it was a well-timed flop. Good no-call.

Hello Josh. This is Frank from California. The 1st play on "Start, Develope, Finish", I believe, if I was on that crew, I would not object to the call/no call, however I would have made the call due to the possibility of an injury.
