My grandfather left me an American-made ax. and I'm keeping it as a very valuable keepsake. I once heard him say that white ash is an optimal choice for the handle of an ax. my grandpa is gone...i always keep it and will restore it someday. thanks for the good video, your tutorial

Amazing job! I couldn't believe you could do much after seeing that rusty blade and busted handle. Even when you cleaned it up, I didn't understand why you were cutting into the blade after spending so much time cleaning it up. And then after you created those markings, and then fashioned the handle, I am still amazed at what I saw. Excellent work; a true master at restoring. Thanks for a great video.

@geoffdrew5207 Год назад
Very nice, the head came out exceptionally good but I would have used a harder timber for the handle.
@TylerSnyder305
@TylerSnyder305 Год назад
Why ? It's not like the axe is good for anything but displaying at this point anyways. Theres a reason the best axes in the world ( north American felling axes from 1890-1940's ) didn't look like this, by the 1920's in the heyday of the American logging industry axes had evolved in to the absolute best that axes could ever be, and the handles did not look anything close to this for good reason. This handle shape regardless of the wood is good for nothing but looking like a cheap wall hanger found at the mall or flea market. The wood he used was perfect for this because it was easy to shape and accomplished the goal of turning a working tool into a useless display piece.
@geoffdrew5207
@geoffdrew5207 Год назад
@@TylerSnyder305 The soft wood used for the handle is not a traditional axe handle material and to anyone familiar with axes it does not look authentic. As for North American axes being the best in the world I think you would find many people disagreeing with that statement.
@TylerSnyder305
@TylerSnyder305 Год назад
@@geoffdrew5207 of course it's not, but this is now just a wall hanger and not a real tool so the soft wood doesn't matter. I'm not sure this was a particularly good axe head anyways, I couldn't make out the potential markings and don't know where this person lives. If it's here in the US I bet money on this head being made in India or China, because is definitely on a pre 1970's American axe head. And as far as north America axes being the absolute best, well I am confident in saying that this is a fact with design and versatility being considered. 200 years of evolution of axes to fell hickory , Douglas fur, knotty pine, American walnut, and the giant sequoias here in northern California. The fawns foot handle , the poll to counterbalance the head and add additional mass behind the bit, convex cheeks to help pop chips and reduce sticking during splitting, and that's just the single bits. We had patterns from every region developed to suit just about every kind of tree being felled on a major scale. From daytons and Michigans, Connecticuts and hoosiers, western and California peeling patterns, there's a pattern for everything. From 2.5lb boys axes up to 5-8lb rafting / construction and firefighting axes. The 4lb California peeling or " reversable " is about the most versatile double bit pattern you'll find. When it comes to felling axes there will never be a finer tool than 1920's north American axes. Germany had their excellent goozewing broad axes, the northern European countries have their carving axes, and American was the king of felling axes.
