True, I agree. When I said “protein treatment” I was thinking of aloe vera, I’ve been meaning to do it for the past couple of months, not sure why I said it wrong.
Surprisingly enough, I was experiencing rough straw like hair, (I watch your videos because we have very similar hair texture) I thought aloe would moisturize it, but that made it feel worse and I just couldn't understand why. Forward to a month later, 2 protein treatments and weekly washing, my hair is starting to feel better between my fingers.
@@kaceyrae8946 same, I really would not recommend using aloe. It really dried up my hair. I had to use protein free deep conditioners for like two months to get it healthy again.

Thank you for this video. I was on the verge of removing the Palmers from my routine. But you are right why stop doing what works. I did an Olaplex treatment 5yrs ago because of the reviews and experienced breakage similar to a protein overload so I'll never do that again. Your video reminded me to keep doing what I'm doing if it works. Please keep posting! You are a reminder that 4c girls can have long beautiful hair, not spend huge amounts of money on a bunch of products, and can keep the routine simple. Thanks!
Girl yes I am so done with folks' recommendations. I've got my products and routine pretty much down. There is always trouble when I get bored and start trying new stuff. LOL.
If your hair feels coarse and hard to moisturize you probably have product build-up(from the grease and the tgin combined) , you have to proper cleanse your strands with a detoxifying shampoo and/or do a clay treatment
Sis, do what works for you !!! My hair stands are extremely fine and break very easily. For years, I have used my oil and then my leave in Prior to this, I tried the recommended: the leave in and then oil In at least two instances my hair was tangled to the point that I had to trim off the hair!!! After the switch of using olive oil and then the leave in, my hair has thrived to the point where , I am waist length ... I will not be changing back lol
@@vee3133 The olive oil and jojoba oil ( when I can afford it) keep (s) my hair detangled which is my main concern ( to prevent breakage) .. The leave in is used to help with my braid pattern since I wear braids and braid outs as my style of choice I also remember as a child my mother merely used hair grease on my hair and my hair thrived. I am so far removed and from what is being touted nowadays and quite frankly *over it* .lol It's what works for you ..
@@lorrainelashley3723 thats interesting, I might try that. I have an ayurvedic oil with a coconut oil base, also avocado oil and olive oil. I use grease. After I deep condition, I'll apply a small amount of oil especially on my ends while it's damp then apply the leave in. Hopefully it works for me also. Thanks for your original comment because I've never heard of doing it that way
@@vee3133 I do put the oil predominantly on my end first and then apply the leave in on the rest strands and smooth everything throughout the length of my hair ( thank you for helping me explain my steps more precisely ...) According to how my hair feels, more often than not, I apply more oil on my ends afterwards as my final step I guess that's my my fine but medium to high density strands are not weighed down . I hope this additional information helps a bit more This technique has saved me inches ...
i love that you’re acknowledging the coarseness because as someone who has used olaplex shampoo and conditioner, i know that it also made my hair a little more coarse than usual. They are heavily protein based so you want to make sure you’re still balancing the moisture :)
Girl I am completely stuck on putting my hair up in twists & keeping it down so my shrinkage/natural texture can thrive .. Either put it up to keep it detangled or leave it down😭😭 but I’m going to start leaving it down in the day & putting it in big twists at night 💛🤍 let that shrinkage thrive!!
Coarseness is a good thing though, you're feeling the strength of your hair when it feels coarse. It has more elasticity when coarse, low porosity and all that good stuff.
Olaplex is not a protein treatment, hair feeling coarse/wiry is not necessarily a bad thing if that is the natural texture. That wiry feeling may actually be dehydration. And buildup can make the hair feel abnormally wiry... which can be solved by clarifying and/or chelating shampoos. Olaplex works better on clarified hair if you are a heavy product users as it is a bond treatment and buildup gets in the way..
idk if you've done this but can u do a video on how to retain length? Also I just wanna say you keep it real and I love that Ty for the tips on natural hair!
Your use of the word coarse is spot on! A lot of ppl mistake hair texture with curl pattern. But when having that feeling I try to do some deep conditioning. So for about three wash days I’ll deep condition and give myself an oil treatment. That’s what usually I do after taking braids down as well just to replenish the hairs. Sometimes using shampoo too often can also create a coarse texture so maybe just a co-wash next time and see how you feel about it. I try not to use shampoo too often just bc I have eczema and am very prone to dandruff and itchies.
Shampoo and condition every week. I wish I could do it twice a week, but in work a full-time job. I just think frequent shampooing, a ling with conditioning, helps with moisture and keeping the hair from matting and tangling. Also knowing how to shampoo hair correctly.
Natural went right back to the chunky braids lol... I’m not gonna lie I can’t stop Putting chunky braids in my hair either. I have the permanent middle line on my scalp lol. Braids last longer. Longer moisture. And Stretch. I switched it up last night and did twist, but the twist shrink too much
I love your hair! I was wondering if you had any tips for people who just started to go natural? I recently convinced my mom to stop relaxing my hair but I have no idea how to take care of my natural hair
A few things I would advise for beginner naturals is to 1.) find out what your hair density and porosity is, this will help you determine what type of products you hair can handle 2.) don’t feel the need to buy or try every product that is advertised to you, be conscious of the amount of money you’re spending on new products 3.) learn to do your own hair, you should be able to know your hair more than anyone else, this will help you to understand when your hair needs a good trim, when it’s dry, when you have moisture/protein overload and etc.
How often do you re - moisturize between wash days?🤔 also i see why you hair grows. You don’t just moisturize it! You love on it!! Watching you do your hair is so therapeutic girl!❤️
I love grease. You just have to make sure you clarify shampoo your hair to get it all off. I don't use any oils or butters anymore. I just shampoo, condition and use dogs mousse. I love it! I shampoo every week so my hair never feels dry, and Is never tangled or mattered anymore. When I was doing it every 2 or 3 weeks, omg, it was a mess and my scalp was on fire! I had sores, too. So I have to shampoo and condition every week. Wish I could do it twice a week, but that's not possible at the moment.
I bought that grease because of you and I like it thank you... I also was using that butter cream before, And it was working excellent, But when I started hearing about the lawsuits over the chemical DMDM Hydantoin, I stopped using it.
@@michaellagrand-jean3840 Yes, but Curly Chemistry and another youtuber are denying that there's nothing wrong with the amount of [formaldehyde] in the product...but 🤷🏿♀️ FORMALDEHYDE in the darn product. They can't use a better option?
🤣🤣🤣🤣 stop it... I thought it was the hair cream in-between your fingers, but don't feel embarrassed. My hands go ashy same way. You made me chuckle 😃 😀.
Have you ever had a stylist trim your hair? I would rather trim or dust my ends myself but I feel like I messed up when I did it the first time. These stylist charge too much lol
Lol, you're using a protein treatment when you use the Olaplex line. That's most likely why your hair is feeling like that, you may need a moisturizing treatment. My hair felt the exact way you described after I used the Aphogee line.
I used olaplex No. 3 and No. 5 on my hair last week and it was so coarse! I was confused bc every natural hair guru on YT was raving about it but I didn’t have a great experience with it.
Girl talk about lightbulb moment. I got Olaplex no 0 and 3 after a year of watching YTber's relaxed and natural use the treatment. I used both no 0 and 3 on wash day for three weeks and my hair felt coarser like crunchy coarse (i have coarse hair naturally). I don't DC but now i feel like i have to counter the effects of the treatment so i bought a DC to use on my next wash day I hope it helps
@@kinkykoils6176 I DC my hair after using Olaplex and it was still coarse and very dry; it was extremely difficult to detangle, especially the roots! Maybe I need to buy a stronger DC or just stop using olaplex bc it’s not giving what it’s suppose to give
Your hair shrinks up cause it’s moisturized lol and even tho I know you like the stretched look, would you not prefer healthiness over length? Also, do you use leave in conditioner? If it feels course it may not be getting that much moisture. Idk
Girl you hair is amazing as always though. About this whole moisturizing thing I have a question. When we say moisturize does it mean that my hair should be damp 24/7? And how many times a week should I moisturize exactly? Because I've watched so many hair videos and they don't really explain this to me
It shouldn’t be damp! That can damage it if your hair is wet for too long! Your hair should feel pliable though. If it looks/feels/sounds “crunchy” it’s time to add some moisture like a leave-in conditioner
@@so.eonee489 You need to experiment with your hair Everyone’s hair will need a little something different Touch your hair Moisturize it Then touch/ assess it daily to see if it still feels moisturized . If not , it’s time to moisturize again. For reference, my hair needs to be remoisturized every three days or so . If I moisturize on Saturday, Tuesday I will need to do it again and so on and so forth.
I also just love messing with those juicy twisted curly ends! I guess u can say I always dusted my hair.. n never really clipped too much ends off ,, I do just the same way u do tiny amounts 😂👌🏾.. and it was mainly when I flatiron it.. or if it was curly I’d go in and snip the NOT SO MUCH defined ends! Either way people would always say it’s so healthy n I knew it was the way I did it..like u said I don’t care about the standards it’s what’s workin for me ! N friend buy yu some hair sheers! I don’t even have any yet ! Lol n I’ve already snipped a bit😫🌚 but it’s cause I know so much more now that I got my locks down I want to do everything right this time!
I have fine hair and I get what you mean, after Olaplex No.3 my hair felt very rough. Coarse is a term used for thick individual strands. But my hair is fine (thin individual strands) it just feels rough. As someone who is used to thinking soft is moisturised, it's throwing me off, to moisturiser my hair and feel that roughness. So I think I just need to get used to a new feeling.
We have similiar hair and when mine feels like that it's because of product buildup.i use cream off nature grease and from time to time I have to wash with a sulfate shampoo/clarifying shampoo.
I do get spirit ends occasionally, but I find that there is no way to completely get rid of every single one of them so I honestly don’t pay them any mind unless I can feel the damage
I’ve been natural all of my life, however, I started taking care of my hair at the age of 12 (when my hair could barely touch my ears). I am now 20. I have never used hair dye.
12:03 I stopped using conditioner and I just use leaving conditioner by itself and my hair fall stopped. To take out the styler and see if that helps the excessive shedding. if that doesn't work then take out the conditioner and use a leave-in conditioner instead.
I find that when my hair starts to feel coarse it's usually because I've added products with protein to my hair so I just go through the products and eliminate the one the proteins. Maybe the olaplex may be having that effect.
HELPPP I'm 13 and I've never trimmed my hair before like NEVER Is my hair really damaged? Because my hair is soft even though I've never trimmed my hair and its mid back length idkk because I dont wanna have to have a big chop
"Technical hair care degree" 😂😂😂..... Yea at this point just do what works for you, Lol. You obviously know what your hair needs and how to achieve the look you want🤷🏿♀️. I watch your videos just to relax mind at night..... 😌. But I am going to try that Palmers grease🤔.
I really want to grow my hair longer. I don’t have ridiculously short hair but im trying to get to BSL and eventually waist. The front of my hair is annoyingly shorter than the back. The back is up to my shoulders whilst the front goes past my bottom lip slightly. I have low po 4c hair, I think im currently having hygral fatigue so I will be doing a protein treatment next wash day. Any tips to grow it? Ik I can but just need to know what to do
Growing natural hair takes a lot of time and patience, one of my biggest suggestions for growing natural hair is to just leave it alone. Protective styles are your best friends when it comes to hair growth, also, sticking to a consistent washday, trim, and moisturizing routine helps out as well.
Hygral Farigue plagued me the whole of 2021 because as a Low Po i was avoiding proteins but i ended up with a lot of damaged and split ends so i started incorporating it back in my monthly wash, i looked for something i could use often but with little protein like Aunt Jessie’s coconut and flaxseed range. Then for my heavy protein i chose to go for Curlsmith bonding salve (Bond reconstructor + Protein) finally my hair is acting right again. Looking to get a professional trim soon but i have been dusting myself. 🤦🏽♀️ it really issa journey
@@dlilwon yes omg 😭 my hair is so angry at me for abandoning it so this year it’s growth time ! when I found out how bad split ends were, I knew it was time to let em go
My hair is always coarse on the ends...i am constantly dusting but it makes no difference. I have tried blowdrying and still the ends are crunchy. I have no idea what to do.
Study the ends of your hair to see if they're split, otherwise you're just cutting off perfectly good hair because your idea of what healthy hair feels like is mistaken.
