Dennis Chandler, a Vietnam veteran, travels more than 1600 miles to pay his respects to a long lost comrade nearly 50 years after he passed away. Reporter Kayla Moody is there as Chandler visits the grave of Sgt. Michael Coomes.

Imagine the years of pain and guilt he endured holding on to the memory of his friend and his friend's death. The guilt of not being able to help and save him must of torn his life completely apart over and over again till he found his friend's family and final resting place.
@@grebo236 thank you brother! Thank you. I guess it’s not hard to see. I don’t know as it will ever go away? And with the way things are brewing here-I don’t want my people, my Americans to see it close up and personal. Been weighing on me too.
@@charliemike13 It never goes away my friend. A loud noise, chopper blades takes me back there for a moment. I cope with it as we all do. Would like to know you...where do you live? I'm in Virginia. Happy Thanksgiving
My closest friend died last year do to an asthma attack. One week before his death he called me and asked me to come visit, I agreed naturally. The last thing we said to each other was "See you soon". I can't imagine having your life saved by a good friend, then find them dead knowing you could do nothing to stop their doom.
I have been suffering from asthma all my life and i had no idea you can die from an asthma attack and ive had several that is so scary and im so sorry for your loss

What an utterly touching example of TRUE respect to a comrade in uniform. This gentleman here is demonstration of how for some, friendship DOES last the test of time. Feeling pretty much humbled right now!
I can tell you from personal experience. You will never have a friend as close as 2 brothers in arms. I have friends i made almost 30 years ago that I will never forget.
“You can never have real closure at the loss of a true friend” damn. Trying to put that into my own perspective with my best friends and that shits got me.
Like the other gentleman said, it does not heal fully, the scars will remain. All we can do is learn to cope with it and teach others the importance of the sacrifice these man and woman did for us.

No matter how many years pass it's never too late to remember and shed a tear. For our comrades- in- arms who made the ultimate sacrifice! Thanks to all the men and women past and present who answered our nation's call to duty! From a proud Vietnam era vet! and proud American Legionnaire! Be safe everybody!! 🙂👍👏🙏

I recently visited the grave of one of my Soldiers that died in Afghanistan. When somebody dies in combat the war goes on, and we that serve next to them don't get the opportunity to attend the funeral when they're actually buried. We instead held a memorial service in Afghanistan. It had been 10 years and I thought I'd handled my grief. Surely it wouldn't be hard to visit his grave and lay something there. It's amazing how the emotions come rolling back like a tidal wave. The poor man from the cemetery (who had helped me locate his grave) didn't know what to do when I totally broke down almost instantaneously upon seeing the headstone. Some wounds never quite heal.

My great uncle was killed in 1916 buried at Ecoivres in France. No one in the family ever knew he was ever alive, let alone in the First World War. My granddad, nor his other brother never mentioned him. I only found out when I was looking for another family members grave. he was born less than a mile away from where I type. A good Cambridge boy, in an Irish regiment, killed my a German, put to rest in France. Such is life.

God bless you my brothers and sisters in the military. Forgive your offenders that never served and have no IDEA how it's like to put their life at risk. Especially for another. God speed to our troops of today 🙏 🇺🇸
Dear God. The Sgt. was 25 years old. Just think on that..... What an awful, senseless war. So many young men killed on both sides, for nothing. However, our warrior soldiers should have been respected for their service to our country when they returned, not treated like dogs. I personally respect every one of them I come across in the community and thank them for the hard work, sacrifice and dedication they gave to our country.
I want to say that I respect us veterans for their loyalty to the memory of military friends! It's great and very important for young people! Greeting and best wishes from Russia
First, thank you for your service to our country, I can’t imagine carrying that hurt and sorrow in your heart for so long. Everyone, everywhere needs to realize the true impact war has on our veterans. Without the honor, courage and commitment they poses we would not be living as a free society. Respect them, thank them.
God Bless You Dennis........and all VN veterans. My father always told me to tell the guys "Welcome Home" when I saw them out and about....because they never got one when it would have mattered most. Dad was there '71-'72 on the ground as a LRRP. He suffered physical and mental wounds from the war, but was the greatest father I could have ever hoped for....I am sure as you were Dennis. "Nam was hard on dad, he needed both knees replaced from his hundreds of miles of travel on the ground there. His left leg got shredded by a grenade as well. The hardest and most terrible physical ailment came much later in 2017 as he was diagnosed with ALS. This is a neurological disease that basically eats away all your muscle and nerve activity, all the while you are perfectly aware what it happening. I watched that slowly erode my hero of a father till he couldn't fight it anymore. He lost this battle on 10/17/18 and I have missed him every day since. It has been determined that ALS was a service related disease, I guess from the spraying that went on. He did inspire me to serve myself, as I enlisted right after high school and went on to serve active and reserves for 6 years. Nothing compared to his service, not even close. Sorry for the book, I just couldn't stop typing this video moved me. Love all you guys, and especially you dad.......03/09/1945-10/17/2018

My best friend passed away back in 2015. Shit still feels like I lost him yesterday, and I had to be a pallbearer for him as well. I miss you James Anthony Fleming aka Tiger 🐯.
That amazing. I cannot imagine the agony of not remembering his name. Occasionally I think of people I knew in my life but haven't had contact with in years. As I remember them, it's like my memory of their name just dissipates into thin air sometimes, and it pains me that I can't recall it. I'll stress about it for a couple hours, few days, or sometimes even multiple weeks before it comes back to me or I look it up. I cannot even imagine how painful it must have been for this guy to know someone on that level and loose them on THAT level and to then forget their name, unable to recall it until looking it up 50 years later. My heart goes out to this guy and may William Michael Coombs RIP.
