In this video I explain how I used vetiver to stabilize a slope and build topsoil on my property. I also teach you how to grow vetiver as a hedge yourself and how to propagate this extremely useful grass.

This may be just what we're looking for! We're trying to stop soil erosion on an incompletely terraced yard. I hope that my local nursery carries this plant. :) Thank you for posting!

It's name is Vetti Vearr. It originates from Thamizh Naadu (tamil nadu). It is also a Medicinal Grass which can be used to purify cold water and you can drink that water. You can even boil it and drink the water.

Propagating vetiver the way you did show (cut the roots etc.) is a common and obviously working method. On the other hand planting these slips with a root or two in a crappy clay soil and less than ok watering may not be the best. Did you tried giving these new plants some headstart and letting them grow a bit in pots/bags before planting them in the soil?

No I just plant them straight in the ground here. I have read there are many better ways, but this has worked well in my conditions :)

Can you smell it when you’re breaking it up? What about when it’s in the ground? I love the smell in essential oil. It know that’s really condensed

Definitely not when it’s in the ground but a little bit when you dig it up and break it apart :)

Questions …. is there a reason why the hedge so far from the fence? Wouldn’t the trees be better planted on the built up terrace side of the the vetiver?

Hi. Thx for the info. What must the soil be like before I plant it. It will be planted around my vegetable beds to help with the strong winds? Must the soil be light & fluffy? Thx

Hi Yvonne. It will grow in almost any soil though obviously the better the soil the more quickly it grows. It is important to water it until it gets established.

Is this something I could use to manage flooding? There has been a lot of building on a floodplain and the small ankle deep stream behind my property is now prone to flash flooding and wrecking my garden

Hi Paul It is unlikely to hold back floodwater but could certainly be used to stabilise any land features/banks that may be affected (or that are themselves placed to divert floodwater).

If you can create some plant barrier on the banks of that creek but way upstream from your garden for hundreds of meters it may help a little bit. Otherwise (if that's permitted by the law) you will be better off investing in sand bags and building a L-shaped dyke, which then you can cover with soil and grow i.e vetiver or on it.

Does it have to be in full sun?
@PracticalPrimate

For full growth and for it to work as a barrier yes. It can hang on in half day sun but you don’t get the same growth and results.
