VFR Flight of Chicago Lakefront turns into IFR

Planned to fly our Cessna 310 up the Chicago Lakefront and grab dinner. Weather deteriorated and we ended up needing a pop-up IFR back into ARR and had to climb on approach to avoid a Bonanza.
Cirrus parachute explained...pretty funny what she thought happened if a Cirrus driver popped the chute.

I am a new subscriber to your channel but found your commentary very interesting, It is nice to watch pilots fly who are ATC. You guys do a phenomenal job directing air traffic and should be commended for ensuring the safety for everyone in the air. I noticed your co-pilot did not seem like a rookie in handling the mike! Great job!

Glad you liked the video Greg...really means a lot. I'm excited to be able to share my aviation experiences with others as you've been doing for years. Thank you for all you've done to help promote GA. I know you fly around the area a bit, if I get a chance to work you at Chicago TRACON I'll say hello (and give you direct of course)!

Enjoying these videos . I trained in , and flew a Ryan Navion . Brings back some great memories . Also flew an American Yankee , Cessna 140, 150, 172 , Piper J-3 , 140 , Comanche , Stearman PT-17 and an AT-6 . Your living the dream buddy ! Beautiful twin Cessna . All the best to you and your co-pilot . Fly safe . New Jersey , USA

Glad you are enjoying the videos! You've flown some really fun planes. Of those, I have flown a Navion, 150, 172, J-3, 140 and Comanche. I've been very lucky and have also been able to fly in an F16, P51 and pitts. :) Now I just cruise around in my old 310 and couldn't be happier.

310 Pilot This weekend in NJ I want to get a ride in a P-51 . Stick time allowed too ! There will be an air show on September 4th . A P-51 , B-17 , 24 and 25 are making there rounds . It will be at Morristown Airport . Approximately 20 nm NW of NY/Newark . Still want to fly a P-40 . In my estimation the most underrated fighter of WW2 . Beautiful Twin you have . What power plants does she have ? All the best ..

What I like about this video is the fantastic decision making. Even with an instrument rating, one can get themselves into a compromising position when weather doesn't cooperate. Sometimes it's best to just turn around and call it a day. Superb video and analysis of the situation.

Its nice to see controllers also be pilots/comm help, Thank you for all you do to make ATC awesome and to help promote GA!!! Keep the videos coming please!! I really enjoyed knowing that if you are VFR to IMC you can just ask as easy as that to stay legal. many GA think its bad to ask for help, you made it look like it was another day in the air. Thank you!!

Thank you Ryan! Not all controllers have the same level of understanding of GA but we are all here to help. I'm glad you liked the video and I will stay at it. Gotta love beautiful Chicago land weather...... you guys work good together & 4 eyes make things a lot easier in that airspace, and like you said any day you can get air born is a GOOD day, too bad Meigs isn't still open, touch & go's were fun on the lakeshore. great vid.

Thank you Kelly. About this time every year I'm pretty sick of winter! She's a big help to have with! I agree about Meigs. I never had a chance to land there but if it was still open I would do it regularly. It would give me a good reason to go downtown.

Great video. I came across this by accident but stopped long enough to enjoy the full story, thank you. If I may say so, you are a lucky man! Your good lady has a voice that is gorgeous - she’ll knock out kneecaps at 700 feet! Congratulations to you both. Here in the UK, different rules apply but it is always interesting to me to see how much more open things appear to be in the US. You have far more uncontrolled airspace than we do and the pilot/controller relationship seems a lot more open and productive. Thank you again for an interesting video. The 310 is a wonderful aeroplane. I have subscribed. All the best to you both. Lee

Loved this video. Been cornered by weather myself. Didn't have the option of a pop-up IFR clearance...no instrument rating (yet) and in a J3 Cub. Had to land in the boonies until the weather cleared out enough to move on. Videos like this help motivate me to get my Instrument rating. Love listening to your radio skills working in the atc system. I think it will help improve mine. Keep up the great work!

Great video. In the 310, I usually use 18 inches when level... Then at glide slope intercept, I'll drop first notch of flaps and then gear. Helps counteract pitch up. If you ever need an IPC or BFR, let me know. I've got twin Cessna time in just about all of them up to and including the Cessna Conquest.
@310Pilot
@310Pilot 6 лет назад
Thank you Thomas! I usually strive for about the same. 18-19 inches and then one dot high first notch of flaps and gear. I agree about that canceling out the pitch and provides for a nice stable approach. In this case I got distracted with the traffic and had to add power and climb 600 ft high and was a little late on the turn in bound. I wasn't quick enough getting the power out being high and that resulted in the late slowing/less than my normal stable approach. If I was IMC (probably wouldn't be climbing to miss traffic) I would have just asked for vectors back around. What area are you in if I ever take you up on your IPC/BFR offer? One can never get too much training.

New subscriber here. Enjoyed the flight. For a while there, I thought your fiancée was a pilot, because she was so proficient on the radio. But then, when you stated that both of you are ATC controllers, it made sense. To bad the weather turned you around, but nice flight, anyway. I’m not a pilot, but I worked at an FBO in Houston, back in the early 1960’s. I was on the linecrew. Plus, I took some flying lessons before being drafted into the Army in ‘66. Got about 20 hours in. I’ve been an aviation fan ever since, but never continued my flight training after my stint in the Army. Even if I was younger, I couldn’t afford it now. Happy and safe flying, and looking forward to more videos.

Outstanding call to get the popup IFR clearance! That V-Tail bonanza was homing in but ATC gave a heads up. I love being under the control of IFR just for that reason alone. Excellent call as well to do the climb and then get permission afterwards. Sometimes the situation requires action before permission.
@310Pilot
@310Pilot 6 лет назад
Thank you! As a controller/pilot, I completely agree with you. There are times when safety comes first...in this case a climb and then tell ATC when you get a chance. I usually am IFR most places I go as well. That V-tail did have my number... it was a lot closer out the window than the camera gives justice. Glad ATC gave the call and I upgraded to on-board traffic that displayed it well. I like to think I have a good visual scan but I'll take all the additional help I can get.

The Cirrus aircraft can be sent back to the factory to have the chute system redone (reset ?) . Toured the factory in Duluth and talked to them about this. It would be up to your insurance company of course.The straps for the chute system are hidden under a thin layer of fiberglass cloth on the outside of the fuselage that gets ripped away during chute deployment. Cool safety system in the Cirrus that has saved many lives.

Thank you for responding and I want to share this with you that flying IFR in a single engine aircraft in actual weather condition isn't safe especially at night so that's way I prefer that flying with a Muti engine aircraft like yours and with the avionics that I see in which you shared with me made me satisfied with your response sir. Hopefully one day You get a IFR clearance to do some GPS approaches which I like to see because I'll be working to finish up my rating soon . Muti engine training isn't cheap anymore like it was years ago so enjoy the moment and I'm looking forward to see more to come as you said in 2018 . Thanks
@310Pilot
@310Pilot 6 лет назад
The reason I got a 310 instead of a single is multi-fold but near the top of the list is the added redundancy (safety) that twins provide during IMC, night, over-water, etc. I have a flight planned tomorrow and even though it will be SKC I'll file IFR and get the clearance and fly the full route with a GPS approach or two. I'll try to get that up as soon as I can. You are correct, multi-training isn't cheap anymore. I did mine about 18-19 years ago in a Seneca I. Wasn't too bad then. Good luck on your Multi!

Nice 310 and I always keep your jepp charts on hand and a hand held radio in case you loose all communications like your ForeFlight did but would you have filed a IFR flight plan to be safe during your decision to go back or seeing or avoiding other traffic? Great ATC communication with the Controller. Flight following is the best safe tool that we Pilots use on every opportunity and for me it's worth it and you both did a great job as controllers and Muti -Engine Pilots in a Beautiful Cessna ., keep it real and happy flying

Thank you Bernard. I agree and do keep backups handy. In addition to the ForeFlight, I have the 530W and 430 plus the Garmin G5. No one in an emergency situation has ever said they have too many options! When I'm cruising, I file IFR about 99% of the time. Being that this was a local flight flown in the airspace that I control at, I knew the areas and altitudes to get an easy pop-up IFR if needed. If someone isn't sure then I would concur it can be easier having an IFR in the system if needed to be activated in a hurry. Have a bunch of flights planned for 2018, I'll keep them coming.

310 Pilot maybe make a Sunday breakfast run to lone rock sometime, it’s a great flight with some really nice scenery around there. Approx 101 nautical miles, it’s a perfect short flight for the 310, lol. Also, I loved the road sodas in this video.

Just stumbled on your video when I searched IFR. Well done, you got a winner in the right seat. Had to laugh when you kept grabbing the mic before her and she said, guess you just not going to let me do it, hilarious. Either way great to have a controller flying GA. As a new IFR rated pilot I really appreciate how ATC watches out for us little guys. Really nice 310 and like that you have a new G5. That is my next investment on top of my 750 and STEC55X. Gotta keep those IFR skills sharp. Look forward to future videos, fly safe.

Thank you Gary! Being IFR rated helps tremendously improve the usefulness of a plane. Congrats on your new rating! I'd love a 55X...I'm trying to decide what new autopilot is in my future...they ain't cheap. What kind of plane do you have? I have about 1500+ hours of flying by myself so giving up the mike isn't natural...I'll get better or be in trouble. :) The G5 is such a cheap huge safety improvement...I love it.

Thanks for the reply. Yea I have done a lot of cross country VFR. Been stuck several times do to weather. I only have about 500 hours and have a 77' C172 with the 180 Air Planes conversion. Helps at my altitude. As for the AP. Yea the 55X is great BUT I wished I had waited just a little longer because as soon as I had it installed Garmin came out with theirs and right after that TruTrack got certified. Both significantly cheaper. Either way having the AP as a single pilot IFR is truly helpful. As for you and your co-pilot keep up the great work at ATC. Trying to convince my 28 year old son that a carrier as ATC would be a good path. Will see. Fly safe.

I really enjoy your videos! I can't pilot myself due to hearing loss but I love to fly. My uncle let me fly his Cessna 172 (I think that was the model) just a little bit when I was younger. That was the only time I ever rode in the front seat. I really miss flying in the small planes.

You mentioned Cirrus. They make those planes in Duluth Minnesota. They are quite the "attraction" because of the at parachute option their planes have. I see their jets flying every now and then where I live enroute to KDLH where they land for maintenance etc. Very interesting plane to say the least. However, I am not a fan of the design. Parachute is cool though.

310 Pilot you are welcome. When I was an active pilot I liked to bring the passengers up to speed so there was no surprises (hey I can dream can’t I?). By the way I have enjoyed flying with a friend in his 310. I have logged a few undocumented hours in that and a baron. You might call me my buddy’s organic auto pilot. Haha

Just noticed that your 310 is booted. Very cool! My Aztec was, although I had to have them reconditioned when I first got it. I think that was about $4K as I recall...maybe slightly less. Then I replaced the prop boots myself, which was pretty straightforward. Great piece of mind though, living in Wisconsin--or Illinois in your case.
@310Pilot
@310Pilot 6 лет назад
Thanks Tom! Aztec's I hear are great in the ice...not that anyone wants to be in it. My boots are original but surprisingly in good shape. I just strip and re-seal myself once a year. They work well but haven't been in ice yet. I got full de-ice for mid-west winters but try to avoid it at all cost. The props just got overhauled last year and I had them replace all the heat boots on them during that. As you said, great piece of mind just in case.
@bluehornet6752
@bluehornet6752 6 лет назад
I wouldn't know how good they are in ice, to be honest. I did everything I could to stay out of it. I flew in Alaska for a year and we were in ice in the old turbine Beech 18 aircraft we flew up there--not fun. Great piece of mind for you guys though, because (in theory) you should be able to get yourself out of what you've gotten yourself into. Great that you strip and re-seal them yourself every year. I'm also an A&P and in the 8-9 years I owned the Aztec, I spent 10x as much as time working on it as I did flying it. Otherwise a normal person just can't afford to keep the thing in the air--the expense of operating an aircraft seems to start at outrageous, and increases as the square of the number of engines. Yeeouch!
