@@WEHVideos Thank you very much for brining this to my attention Mr. Skip. I have to admit I switched to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 some time ago. But also in MFS the Cessna 172 (with steam gauges) is my favourite airplane to fly. This offer is perhaps a great occasion for me to relaunch X-Plane again and compare them.

I learned tha value of old school navigation during a holyday in my car that was equiped with a GPS (somewhere in the 90's) That was before they showed maps. I made a nice plan with all waypoints as backup. Somewhere after 500 km in the middle of nowhere it went wrong, the GPS lost its location (mountains, lots of trees, etc no problem for a modern GPS ans some war conflict that reduced the resolution) I had a map but no clue where on the map we where. Luckily I knew how to navigate on a compass so I was able to find my location and from there follow the map. I am not a pilot but I like to do old school navigation in Xplane ( when I use VORs to see if I am still on route and for most around the airport, thy are often hard to see. If you see the airport you can already be much to close by to descent (I do not use autopilot, I handfly the whole route.) These videos are great, thank you.
Hi pa4tim sounds like a fun trip in the mountains :-) I'm definitely with you "flying" the airplane myself, I seldom use Autopilot and when using the NAV radios I just use it for reference. This is a huge point of confusion for me when I'm dabbling in simbrief and getting lost in all the waypoint names. My understanding between IFR and VFR blurs.
Hi grovermatic, It's really not too bad just take one step at a time and it will make sense. Yea Waypoints Checkpoint Fixes can be confusing but they are just "places" we mark on a chart or put in GPS to help keep us on track. VFR is Visual Flight Rules and basically you just jump in the airplane a go where ever you want BUT you must avoid restricted airspace and that's can be confusing :-( IFR is Instrument Flight Rules and you file a flight plan with Air Traffic Control, you must follow that flight plan or cancel it. If you are familiar with transponders, 1200 is used for VFR flights. With IFR flights ATC will assign you a "Squawk" code you enter into the transponder. This way they can recognize your airplane on there radar and associate your "bleep" on the radar with the flight plan you submitted. So if you are in you little Cessna 172 going for a "joy ride" you are under VFR flight rules and you set you transponder to 1200 and pretty much go where and when you want, following all the "rules" of course. This identifies you as a VFR flight at ATC or Center however they will Not contact you, they just know where you are. Hope this helped some :-) Blessings, skip
@@WEHVideos Yeah, I love getting on ADS-B Exchange and watching Cessnas fly their squiggly VFR paths while listening to 122.8 on my scanner. :-) I think my problem is having jumped feet-first into learning IFR in X-Plane 11 without first taking in foundational VFR navigation knowledge.
