Welcome to WEH Videos.

My name is Skip. I have over 60 hours in a Cessna 172N on my way to a real Private Pilot Certificate. I have been an avid Flight Simulator Pilot since my first computer, an Amiga 1000, purchased more than 25 years ago. My Amiga is alive and well and I still like to fly Falcon by Spectrum Holobyte and F/A-18 by Electronic Arts from time to time. I'm a student pilot flying out of San Carlos Airport in San Carlos, California and Benton Field in Redding Cal.. It's fun to compare the real flying with simulator flying.

I plan to add videos mostly pertaining to X-Plane. I have almost 1000 hours in X Plane and FSX and want to share some things I've learned.

Please leave suggestions for future videos on X-Plane and I will do my best to meet your requests.

Thanks for visiting.

Blessings,

@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 27 дней назад
Hi SuperKamiRose, Don't exactly understand your question but you can add instruments and controls to the instrument panel in Plane Maker assuming the plane you want to modify uses the 2D panel. Most new airplane do not use the 2D panel so this will not work. Check out this video on changing 2D panels: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lxuqQA65omc.html Hope this helps and thanks for watching :-) Blessings, skip

Thia original post is a few years old, so hopefully, you are still responding to comments. As a new simmer, and non real flyer, extremely helpful. Question: I wonder what your suggested settings would be for a landing back at, say, sea level or close to it. Do you reverse the adjustments made on the way up? Thanks again. Excellent!
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 2 месяца назад
Hi billjirsasr3025, Yes indeed I'm still responding :-) For takeoff and landing you always have the prop control all the way forward and mixture would depend on altitude, all the way forward below 3000ft above sea level. You want to be able to get full power if you had a problem and had to go around so prop forward takeoff and landing. I don't fly constant speed prop airplanes so I'm not the best for information other that what I said in the video so if this is your airplane of choice might want to check other videos with pilots with more experience than me! Since you are new to flight sims check out my channel and videos for new pilots get a free Cessna 172N, the one I use in most of my videos in the series, by watching the first video: ru-vid.com/group/PLjqSrWIZDAi8IsbmFdGfJBVJ7jYSxAt26 Let me know if you decide to follow along with the training and get the Cessna, hope you do :-) Blessings, skip

Also, what and where is the p and g file?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 3 месяца назад
Hi johnhunter3011, The file is actually a png file. Files have an extension and for photos common extensions are .jpg, .RAW and.png there are other extension but you should get the idea. X Pane uses a png file for the instrument panel in older airplanes so you need to find the panel.png file. It should be located in the airplane folder where all your airplanes are located, look for the airplane you are trying to make a 3D cockpit for. Here is the path to locate the png file. X Plane xx>Aircraft>folder your airplane is in>your airplane folder>cockpit>-panels- If there is no file then you can NOT make a 3D cockpit. Newer airplanes do not use a .png file so this can't be done. In the panels directory you should see a file named panel.png this is the file you open in Gimp to modify as you like. You can click on the file and select "open with program" and select Gimp. Or you can start Gimp and select open and navigate to the panel.png file. However I suggest you try and follow the videos just using the original panel.png file and see how it goes. Watch the videos a couple time so you know exactly what to do. This is actually very simple but it MUST be done in the correct order with no step missed. If you have trouble watch the video on the area you are having trouble everything should work if you follow the video exactly. You do not need to do anything in Gimp if you don't want to. The idea of editing the .png file in Gimp is to make it look better or remove something you don't want. Once you get the 3D panel working in your airplane with the original panel you then can start to modify the panel.png file in Gimp and work on a copy so you always have the original. I usually create a copy of the original panel.png for backup purposes using a different name. Note for the panel to show up in your airplane it must be named "panel.png" IMPORTANT! Make a copy of the airplane folder the whole airplane and work with that panel.png file so if something goes wrong you still have your original airplane, always work on a copy! Hope this helps, let me know. Blessings, skip

Hi ED-zm8ut, Glad you are liking the series so far hope that continues :-) I didn't know the runway headings were changed been quite a while since I've flown out of Benton Field. Hey Skip, I'm glad I found your classes! I bought Xplane 12, can I also install your plane there or will I have conflicts? There are currently only a few aircraft for sale for Xplane 12, does this have to do with what these aircraft look like or can I also install aircraft from Xplane 11?

Hi pfv3462 I'm glad you found them too :-) Yes you can install airplanes made for X Plane 11 into X Plane 12. Actually you can put any airplane in XP12 Aircraft folder and if it's not compatible it just will not show up in your list of airplanes when you run XP or it won't run correctly so just delete the airplane from the Aircraft folder. If you are purchasing airplanes then you should be sure they will run in XP12 before you buy :-) Thanks for watching hope this helps and let me know how you are doing with the series. Blessings, skip

Thanks again for these videos. I always wondered why I couldn't just fly point to point. And as you said just going by VOR gets a little too boring. In the first waypoint example would you just use the waypoint BEIRA instead of creating a new one?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 5 месяцев назад
Hi medwaystudios, Nice to hear from you again :-) Yes you could use the BEIRA waypoint but you can't see it. With this type of VFR flying you are not using autopilot or GPS you are flying manually and going strictly off visual ground references. We use the VOR in case we get lost and as a double check but don't want to rely on it for flying the route. In my opinion it's best to be able to know exactly where you are by looking out the windows. In real life VFR flying you would probably be flying the same routes over and over and should become familiar with the terrain and have many ground references you always look for especially places you might be able to land in an emergency. Again this is just me but I like flying manually trying to maintain altitude, heading, and speed and try to see if I can match my flight plan calculations. It's just a lot more fun in the simulator otherwise, like I said in the video, using AP in the sim is like watching TV. You might like my series on the Navigation Log where you create a flight plan then try it out and see how it works. @@WEHVideos Thanks for the explanation Skip. I shouldn't have made the comment until I watched the next video where I see you didn't have a GPS at all so makes sense to not use a predefined waypoint since there would be no advantage of that. Your videos are very informative and well presented.I learn a lot about basic flying from them.THANK YOU !!!!!! With reference to this trim video, I would greatly appreciate you doing several comprehensive presentation videos with the Cessna on how to control the plane in "slow flight" !!! Vid #1--- How to change altitude (up/down) while maintaining a fixed airspeed. Vid #2 -- How to change airspeed (up/down) while maintaining a fixed altitude. Vid #3 -- How to change both simultaneously. I have difficulty doing these basic operations corectly. THANK YOU !!!! for your time. This would be very helpful to me and most other flyers. You presented it at one time ( I believe ) but I would like to see it done in a more comprerhensive way both in flight and before a landing. Again THANK YOU !!!!!!
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 6 месяцев назад
Hi JoLo-vx1nb, Thanks so much glad the videos are helping. Sorry but I'm not sure when I will be making another video but I will consider slow flight when the time comes. For slow flight and precision flying in a simulator I have found it very difficult. Slow flight and precision flying in a sim is much harder than in real life flying because you can NOT "feel" the airplane you only have a visual sense plus consumer controllers just don't cut it, this combination is just not going to work well. If you are trying to preform precision flying in you sim you MUST have at a minimum a really really good Yoke, Rudder Peddles, and Trim Wheel. Without these precision flying in the sim is at best very difficult and frustrating or impossible. I am curious as to why you are interested in these maneuvers, in my pilot training we never discussed these but I had to stop training so maybe that would have come later, I don't know? Here are my thoughts and suggestions you can play around with if you like: As for maintaining a fixed airspeed in a climb or descent and the other things you want there are no set "rules" to follow just setting your trim and throttle for a desired FPM rate of descent and airspeed. For climbing you should use full throttle for climbing 99.9% of the time and trim for speed. For descending us throttle to control descent rate and trim as necessary (Take off & Landings have some requirements). Maintaining altitude with a change in speeds again is a combinations of trimming and throttle. The more you slow the airplane you will need more trim to maintain altitude, as you speed up you would use less trim to maintain altitude. Sorry this is not exactly what you were looking for but it's the best I can do right now. Have a great Christmas and New Year! Blessings, skip
@JoLo-vx1nb
@JoLo-vx1nb 6 месяцев назад
I agree -- to do these settings in X-Plane with (in my case) a joystick is difficult. However, I did assign 3 buttons on my joystick to set trim (up-down-takeoff) along with throttle control. I was then able to obtain excellent control of airspeed / altitude. Controlling pitch with trim control only (no manual joystick input) -- allowed excellent control. Certainly NOT what you would do normally - but for the simulator - OK. I was interested in learning how to do this because I thought this was a fundamental skill all pilots must accomplish. I refer to this skill as "slow flight " but maybe I am wrong. You mentioned precision flying also.THANK YOU for responding to this request so quickly along with your suggestions. GOD bless you also.
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 6 месяцев назад
Hi JoLo-vx1nb, Glad to hear back from you and you figured out how to make things work. If you are serious about sim flying and want to experience what is like (almost) to fly a real airplane I highly recommend rudder pedals and trim wheel. I know these can be expensive but once you have them you will never want to go without them they really do make a huge difference in the sim experience. I never did a video on slow flight because I assumed most people don't have ruder pedals and it would be a waste of time. I think I will go ahead and make a video since you asked, at least you will have the information needed for slow flight and that just might encourage you and others to upgrade their sim controllers :-) . With that said first I will have to test and make sure it''s practical in the simulator to do this, as I said earlier controllers make the difference. The trouble with trimming with buttons is you don't get precise control so you will find yourself constantly having to trim so in reality you are not trimming your hunting. Rudder pedals are essence for slow flight because flying at near stall speed make the aileron useless because of the pitch up angle of the airplane. They also will make your landings so much easier especially when you have cross winds! Thanks for encouraging me to make another video I've been out of ideas for some time now :-) Might want to subscribe to my channel to get notified when the video comes out should take several weeks to make or more! God Bless and Happy New Year! skip

Hi JoLovx1nb, Well I'm afraid the slow flight video is going to take quite a bit of time to make and I just might give up sorry to say. I am finding it very very hard to accomplish the maneuvers in the sim, this is going to take a long time to master. Right now I can not even maintain a simple constant heading, altitude, and airspeed within the requirements for the maneuvers :-( I'll give this some more time but I don't know if I'm up for all the work this will take or if it's possible with the controls I have, sorry. Just wanted to let you know it will be a while. FYI Requirements for just straight and level flight are +/- 100ft altitude, +/- 10deg heading, +/- 10 kts While I was able to do this during my training in a real airplane I can't in the simulator at least not yet. Well, when u have an engine built for leaded gas and you throw unleaded in it its going to have issues. That lead helped the valve seats so they were built weaker, so obviosly youll start to have issues when using unleaded. Fauling could just be the carbs running rich, you have student's flying them that may not be always correct with the mixture adjustment
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 7 месяцев назад
Hi izaiahschlosser4512, Right you are but it's been over 20+ years since leaded gas has been available so there probably are not too many engines running today that have not been rebuilt or replaced for using unleaded fuel. Not only do you have students not using the mixture controls correctly some seasoned pilots struggle getting the mixture correct, it's easy to forget about the mixture control when the flight conditions are really challenging, all this effects engine life. Unfortunately Laminar decided the lighting model popular in video games was the way to go and some years later have shown no urgency to address needs of pilots . Originally thier key selling point was “ a more realistic and accurate flight model and experience “ . When Microsoft re entered the arena , they pivoted to provide better sunsets , cloud lighting , puddles on the runway BUT cockpit lighting “ who cares “ - after over 12 years with x-plane I gave up on xp12 . As an electronics engineer. Could I make one comment. Solid wire is not what you want, it's much harder to make a good solder contact with. Stranded wire increases the surface area, reducing resistance, reducing power requirements and also makes a better mechanical connection. Not that you should be using the solder to make a mechanical, but it makes it less likely to detach.

Hi Mor2know-qm7pe, One way is to open the map and see where you are in relation to the airport runway and turn and fly to a position that sets you up to land again. I'm assuming you are using X Plane or a simulator that has a map that shows your airplane moving on it. In real life, when you are lost, you can contact the tower of the airport and ask for help or tune your comm radio to 121.5 which is an aircraft emergency frequency and tell them you are lost and where you want to go. But if you know of a VOR at or near your airport tune you NAV radio to the VOR and head to it, once you find the airport you should be able to enter the traffic pattern and land. Below is a link to my videos on navigation you might find some help there. Hope this helps and thanks for your question and for watching :-) ru-vid.com/group/PLjqSrWIZDAi9S9ds3QbfiTkjGAmE6b7IG Blessings, skip

Hi, I've just been given a link to your video as I have recently installed Xplane 11 and want to modify an aircraft panel.I've followed your advise and copied the stock C172 into another folder but it doesn't open in Plane Maker. Hi bobbuckfield3790, I'm sorry to say the new airplanes in XP11 up do NOT use the 2D cockpit so you can not make changes to the panel. If you want to do this on an older airplane that uses the 2D below is a link to the free 172N that I offer on oy website. You can also download many airplanes from the XP forum that use the 2D panels. www.fhphotography.com/WEHVideos_Cessna.html Blessings, skip

Hi bobbuckfield3790, Before you try to make changes make a backup of the complete folder so if something goes wrong you can start over. You should be able to open this airplane in XP plane maker 11 and 12 so I don't know why you are having a problem. What file are you opening? You need to open a .acf file and you should see several .acf files all starting with 172N_xxx.ACF, do not try and open the files with the "~" thing at the end of the name these are backup flies. This may sound crazy but did you unzip the folder and place it in XP11/Aircraft folder. It doesn't matter where you put the airplane as long as it's in XP Aircraft folder. You can make a new folder to place it in, I have a folder in the Aircraft folder called Free where I put all the aircraft I download. Doubt this will help with the problem but sometimes it's not a bad idea to start over. Let me know how it goes! Blessings, skip

hI V1II349, Sorry you are having trouble. It's hard to tell what your problem might be from the information you have given I don't recognize these errors. I suggest you watch the first part of the video again where you setup Blender. Go through all the steps again to make sure you didn't miss a step especially where I go over the right side of Blender where you setup the cube and the export information needed for X Plane I"m hoping you might find something you missed, there's so much that needs to be correct and missing one thing produces errors. I'm very confident the video explains all you need to know to make this work so you might have missed one little step. Also, what version of Blender are you using this doesn't seem to work on versions above the version I use in this video so if you have a newer version go here and find v2.9 or lower: download.blender.org/release/ Hope this helps please let me know :-) Blessings, skip

@@WEHVideos Thanks for the reply, I was using version 3.6 or something in the beginning but found your comment to use 2.9 or lower but yet it didn't work with 2.80 either. The only step I couldn't do is the "Part of cockpit panel" as I don't have that option in blender so I'm wondering if that might be the cause.

@WEHVideos 10 месяцев назад
I'm still not sure exactly where you are getting the error message. So if I got this right you don't have the option under the Material tab to make it part of the cockpit. I suggest going over every step for creating the cube's material section, placing the png file on the cube etc. see if that helps. Sounds like the cube is not set up right. Give that a try and let me know. Good luck don't give up :-) Blessings, skip

Great video and explanation but I am confused about activating carb heat for every landing, does this include landings where outside temperatures do not indicate icing? Since you mentioned that using carb heat may damage your engine because of the unfiltered air used. Another question would be: How long does it usually take till the ice is gone?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 10 месяцев назад
Hi saen0r, Thanks glad you liked it :-) Yes use Carb Heat every time you land. It's not the temperature outside that's the issue. It's a bit complicated but a simple reason is there is a pressure temperature relationship that takes place "inside" the carburetor and under certain conditions ice may form inside the carb, it doesn't need to be a really cold day. There's more to this than I can explain here it's just a good idea to always use carb heat when landing. I don't have any idea how long it would take to remove the ice, that would depend on how much ice has formed. Probably the first indications of ice would be the engine not performing correctly, running bad enough for you to notice something is wrong and that could be a lot of ice, I don't know. I don't think it would to too long to remove the ice once you turned on carb heat since you are dumping hot air from over the exhaust manifold into the carburetor. However, if you are landing and need to go around for a missed approach and you find you don't have the power due to ice your in trouble and the engine might even run even worse with no power while melted ice goes into the engine! Hope this helps and thanks for watching :-) Blessings, skip

@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 11 месяцев назад
Hi BW-xo6fx, Sorry I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to do. Below is a link to my Plane Maker videos one of these might help you. Keep in mind the newer airplanes that don't use the 2D cockpit these tips would work! One thing I did on the 2D cockpits was move "things" around to where I could see them without having to change my view. So open an airplane that uses the 2D cockpit in X Plane Plane Maker and click on an instrument or control you want to move and move it to where you want it to be. You mentioned Trim so you could relocate the trim indicator by the trim wheel to someplace where you can always see it on your panel, you can do the same with the flaps control just move it to where you can see it all the time, I think that's what you are trying to do anyway. I know this isn't realistic but it sure makes flying a simulator much easier when you can see everything and I've done this on several airplanes, moved instruments and controls to "convenient" locations. Let me know if this is what you were thinking and if it helped :-) Blessings, skip

Hi RonaldS1986, Actually flying over water in small aircraft is much easier you don't get up and down drafts so it's easier to maintain a steady altitude and level flight. With that, just note where the horizon is in the windshield when you have established level flight and keep it there.
