I *loved* those, especially for Pirates. They were so in-depth and included on the DVDs instead of being exclusive to some special edition like you'll have these days.

@@GamePlayer1695 the bad cgi has never been a big part of the show, beyond maybe the first couple of episodes. It's always been about appreciation, and even when things don't look that good they try to understand why it looks wrong and why the studio couldn't do better at the time instead of just reacting to it.

My mum is awesome she worked on the lotr, hobbit, avatar, one of the King Kong, planet of the apes, Batman begins and multiple other movies in visual effects

@@TheShakan973 Disney is so obsesses with making things look realistic that they overdo it to the point where people can no longer suspend their disbelief. They don’t use lighting to their advantage anymore and the overly high-quality ruins the textured feel of older films, which also makes it harder to comprehend when it’s way too clear.

I think Davy Jones still looks better than something like Thanos.

I'm surprised by how well Gollum holds up. That was master skill making him.

One of the best looking cgi characters ever made. He looks crazy real.

i mean they literally got a response from mark hamil on their mandalorian video. (he gave them some advice that if they're trying to work their way in to the industry, to try and not use loaded works like "Better than!" etc. But he was really impressed how they redid that shot.

Haha i mean to be fair, late night talk show would be a step backwards haha, they're already reaching just as many people with way more engaging content I hope their studio does start getting some high profile gigs though, it'd be rad to see their logo after a aaa movie

Nah nah not a late night talk show, but a nice lengthy 1+ hr video podcast by starting off with some highlights from the latest trailers or theatrical releases and then covering a main topic: whether it's a specific film/franchise or a specific VFX topic.

Sound design is very under appreciated

This is the best idea I've seen in a comment for a long time.

They could do many episodes just on some series too. Think of how many iconic sounds have come out of Star Wars or even the MCU now. Getting insight into not just what makes up those sounds, but also the process of how and why the creators made it that way would be cool. A lot of epic sounds are created using really unexpected things.

It really makes me wonder why Davy Jones is so much more realistic compared to other CGI creations around the same time or even ones produced today

The most fascinating part is, at that time I thought it looked like some kinda octopus makeup was put up on someone. Had that dried makeup type look in some scenes. I never once thought this was completely cg. The lighting and the animation is everything here.

Ah, it's easy. You just rotoscope the face, apply some layers. Add some physics, subsurface scattering and voila. CGI has really come a long way. Could do this under 15 minutes on a calculator.

@@DaFrancc Good match up of facial animation, mocap, and proper specular highlights add a ton. Humans move far differently and more rigidly than the exaggerated yet buttery smooth cartoony ones. I always see mistakes with overdoing lip animations. The newest Luke Skywalker had that issue in two spots in Boba Fett. Same with Leia in Rogue One.

Agreed! I would love to see the comparison, maybe someone taking the challenge of recreating the scene the exact way as the original like they did with the Dune scene

It would probably be more realistic to attempt the skeleton fight Harryhausen did for Sinbad since that only has one skeleton.

I was thinking the same thing - they grab with the claws and kill with the jaws.

It's so good that the other CG characters in the same shot look only ok at times, at other times not great. But if they were in any other film of the time you'd think 'damn that's good cg'

At World's End is basically a pass from me, I was incredibly disappointed by that entry. Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest are both phenomenal though.

Yeah, pretty much only thing holding it back is the mentioned lack of motion blur. But the animation and the blend of live action and animation is so spot on it's hard to believe it was done by manually moving puppets frame by frame.

Stop motion seems to be rather a dying art in this day of extremely complex CGI, alas, but I really do think when done well it has an amazing ability to hold up over time in a way that digital effects don't always do...? I reckon movies like Coraline will still be classics even when the current crop of MCU extravaganzas may perhaps become considered "outdated CGI" by future viewers... As the guys note here, maybe part of it has to do with the way that you get a certain degree of natural lighting & texture for free, without having to be at the mercy of current software's limitations in those spaces?

@@sammy.knuckles especially with T3 because I think that is an AMAZING movie with awesome CHI! Especially towards the end with battle damaged arnie, not to mention the use of practical effects for when the T-800 puts his power core in the terminatrix mouth! So many great parts!

Add King Kong on that list as well.. there are some questionable CG scenes in the film, but King Kong always looks amazing.

And honestly, the only CG character since then that really compares is Thanos.

You forgot Ceasar from Planet of the Apes... man i love these movies and the cgi from the apes are just soooo realistic

@@ComedyBros5 Depends on which Thanos. Sometimes it's amazing and sometimes he looks way to plastic. Btw, I would throw Alita from Alita Battle Angle in there as well. She does fall a bit in the uncanny valley, but the animation is crazy good! After I saw it the first time I got convinced that we would se fully CG humans in movies in a not to far distant future.

He's one animator. These characters are created by many people, starting by concept artists who draw a bunch of ideas for the director to choose. Some artist drew several Gollums and Peter Jackson chose one. Then many diferent artists modeled and animated the character. Same thing for the shots.

Honestly, it might be worse these days because of the fact that these days, movie companies tend to make movies faster but with weird/straight up bad cgi, spider man cgi in marvel franchise is complete bad while in Tasm franchise, it’s very photoreal because they took their time meanwhile marvel tries to make it faster

What do you mean 'still looks 100% real'? Time can't make things that look 100% real look less than 100% real.

@@1747carling there have been CGI effects that, when I was still a kid, I though they looked so real. But then technology improved and now I can blatantly tell it's "just" CGI. The PoTC trilogy is not the case as all the effects look incredibly well even today. Same with for example LOTR.

@@ancientflames I think that's mostly down to how modern production works. Comparatively to some of the tent pole trilogies in the early 2000s like Lord of the Rings which had almost a decade of planning and top artists, most big movies (especially by Disney) are made quite quickly like with Marvel. Marvel for example, has multiple teams developing multiple movies/shows at once, with most teams and houses being the same people working on all of them. So they spend like 4 months filming 10 months before releasing it and that doesn't give time for a lot of wiggle room, especially for last minute changes to CGI heavy scenes or sequences. While some of them look great like Infinity War and a good portion of Phase 3, you get stuff like Black Widow which has terrible compositing in the final act and that's just due to most of these shots being reshoots or pickups done very late having little time to get done. They've already talked about Black Panther but it was a very similar scenario with that, the final act and fight between the villain was filmed last and had to be done in 2/3 months before release. While I enjoy the movies, I don't like the over reliance on CG mainly because not a lot of the time is put into CG especially when they've got 10 other projects down the pipeline that have to be started the next day. Films from Denis Villeneuve, Matt Reeves and Edgar Wright are fantastic in all departments, especially visual effects, because they give time for the teams to work out kinks and adapt with ample time given. Sorry for the little rambling, I've thought about this a lot lmao.

@@ziggygunz2447 I have heard that as well, and I know some people were initially confused over if it was some next level CGI or just really stylized aesthetics. I was into 3D technology, games and behind the scenes cinema tech at the time so I knew what it was long before ever seeing a trailer and as such can't really give an opinion on how convincing it was to an average viewer at the time. I just know I was highly anticipating it at the time and ended up impressed at the tech, if not the story.

One of my favourite films of all time. So underrated.

Yes!!! It's like a forgotten piece of art these days. I watched it again circa six months ago and then scoured the Internet for any details or behind the scenes stories and there is some fascinating stuff out there. It was like a miracle that it came together at all.

Just watched this because of your suggestion and wow! It was so good, the mix and references where great, I'd love to see them react to it as well

I saw it in the early 80’s as a kid and it terrified me. 😂

And an "animators react" episode for episodes like "The Witness" and "Zima Blue". They could also check out the stop motion in "All Around the House".

I think it would have benefited greatly by removing the whole island sequence. Aside from that, the movie is amazing.
