I have just had one of the worst nights of my life. I came here to see if it could cheer me up and it got me to smile. I thank you for putting this up because you have saved me from going insane
Perfect, you guys always manage to fit a lot of helpful VFX tips into such a short amount of time. Definitely gonna use some of them, thanks. Massive shoulder.
@Kuebic Nah i don't think so, they have to add just some metal material shader, adjust some setting of it and render with mental ray, it's quite strange because in the other videos the car models were better than this.
I love how you dont use just CGI. Its important to pay homage to all the visual effects artists before you. They're the ones that helped pave the way for the technology that exsists today! So thank you for keepin it real!
Brandon and Freddy, you guys have a sense of timing and direction that I often miss in (dare I say?) 'professional' produced effects. They often mess up on what you guys have mastered; making it look natural.
I highly recommend Blender, it can do everything 3DMax can do and now it has Motion Tracking built in. It keeps getting more awesome every day. It's free, but you don't get what you pay for, you get a lot more. Open source is the reason on this one. I'd say this is the best example of the power of people coming together to create something bigger than themselves, which is the motivation for coders donating so much time to build it.
That shot of Freddie on top of the car Just Cause style... Amazing how they even did the reflection of his feet on the roof. Weird how he doesn't cast a shadow but the car does.
hi freddie and brandon. im an vfx student at the university of toronto. i usually work on more high end stuff, like gaming animation. but which program should i use, autodesk maya or 3ds max
Hay Brandon and Freddie love what you guys are doing... I have a question about the Frogger angle. In this scene you do a slow pan up when Freddie is running across the road. but in the shot with the cars... I'd dosn't look like you do. My Questions is how did you match the panning action so that the cars matched the angle that as you follow Freddie across the road... I hope that makes sense? If you have the time, let me know.
Ive a question, did you have to get permission for some of these shoots with guns, like the Frogger or Tron car shoot? Or did you do something different?
Wow. This video is the first time where I get everything your saying. To be honest, the effects done were pretty simple and could be done by anyone, but the way they all come together... damn... only freddiew and brandon could pull something like this. Props! :)
IF you are an animator you should know about blender and the fact that he mentions it in this video is great. It goes to show you that its one of the best programs that is free out there.
I can recommend sticking to Blender forever - it can do everything one would think of, and personally when i started using it, i quickly was more productive in it than in Max. Then again, it was uhm... 9 years ago - Blender certainly matured since, don't know whether Max's workflow since improved or whether it's just me who never quite got the hang of it.
I thought about taking an aftereffects class... then I realized I just need to watch some of your stuff and I can do all of the stuff I want to do... and it's free!
@JaysonMooYoung okay I admit it I don't know what Lion and FCPX is, u have the knowledge high ground. but i like the idea that u agree with customisable PCs and premiere pro does look good for video editing, but isn't sony vegas just as good and can be used on windows? and I'm not sure what u mean by "pushing the company to move ship" did u work in the company or own shares in it or something?
Just have to weigh in. Awesome video as always guys. Really enjoy your creative style and inventiveness. The advice on trying Blender is really good, and there is one more free alternative. I won't go in to comparing it with Blender, however Caligaris Truespace has been free since Microsoft bought Caligari some year ago. It used to be a proprietary quite expensive program, but now it is free. It has some really good tools and some very nice radiosity renderers. Just search for Truespace.
Rotoscoping, which is a cleaner and faster way of masking. It draws the outline of the object for you pretty much. You get it with Adobe After Effects.
@RicardoMusch Thanks a lot. The clean UI of maya seems to be the reason most people might make the switch. I guess it's probably better to learn max first before switching though.
@L1Rtheloner My best bet is they shot the 2 scene with less zoom than the final result. On post production they zoomed the image a little bit (well, maybe more) and move combined scene up and down to follow Freddie. If the initial shot were shoot at a high resolution, then there will be less to no problems on zooming on the post-production... Which mean, no, the camera wasn't moved at all. It just standing still up there looking at the street.
the type of computer does not matter unless software is only available for that specific OS, Freddie uses Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro, and 3D Studio Max, Final Cut Pro is Mac Exclusive, and from what I see they have both PC and Macs, so there you go...
I wish I had after effects. Hey why don't you have a contest best video using at least one effect with out affter effects.the winner wins after effects.or you could just give it to us ;)
I wanna know how you blended in 2 video's to one and made it look so real , i mean you didnt mask out every frame obviously, you did something else to get for example your jump with the cars or your duck with the big truck or the cars on the road with your movement
@manlybeastify Yep 3DS Max is free for students but one thing to consider is if you like working with these sort of things and want to use it for commercial means you'll have to purchase 3DS Max as the student edition is a non commercial license. Blender might not be just as good but it is Open Source and you can use it for commercial purposes. Either works though. Just might be best going from something not as good to something good than the other way around.
@ALNyland I think they explained that in the first vfx vid for this. Where they took two shots, one of the car driving on that bridge, the other with freddie standing on top of a green screen.
@KamrisAjelico I did see the "No Commercial Projects" thing, but there's no mention of a 13 month limit :S Besides, 13 months is more than enough time for someone to get used to the program and then decide whether to buy it or not. I was just saying instead of getting Blender then moving to 3DS Max, why not get 3DS Max (student) and see if you like it. That's the closest thing to it!
