This is a fun little tube amp to use as a mod platform. It's kind of a Champ, but with some other DNA in there. It's a single ended class A with a 6V6 in the power section and a single 12ax7 on preamp duties. It can go from dark and gainy to bright and clean. With a single 10" speaker it's never going to be super loud, but it can hang for small gigs or quieter bands. If you need more volume, you just need more speakers tbh.
Past a certain point, watts don't matter. Frankly, for most gigs I've done of the last decade, over 20W is overkill (unless you're playing a ton of outdoor gigs with no PA) If you need more volume, you need more speakers. So this little 6-10W has been a fun amp that's real easy to carry single-handedly!
I did some basic maintenance, a little cosmetic change and a couple mods I found useful:
+ The choke cuts MASSIVELY down on the single coil hum
+ The tone stack is pretty thin, so I added some bass.
+ The clipping circuit is REALLY FUN. I put in 2 modes (+ true bypass) that add a ton of gain options.
These mods are described fully on www.robrobinette.com I wholeheartedly recommend reading that site, it's the most comprehensive user / modder / builder guide for tube amps. I've learned a ton from there over the years.
