Via ferratas were created to help WWI soldiers from Italy progress over and through the Dolomites (Italian Alps). It translates to "iron road" or "iron way" in Italian, and is a series of rebar steps, holds, and steel ropes/cables installed into the mountain, helping to aid the passage of hikers and travelers up, over, and through the massive mountains. Via ferrata delle Trincee is located just across from the largest peak in the Dolomites, Marmolada, at Passo Fedaia. The beginning of the route has a challenging vertical section and is not suitable for beginners. This route includes an exhilarating via ferrata route, a suspension bridge, an old bivac/mountain hut, and WWI tunnels to explore.
