FIlmed May 22nd and 23rd, 2017
Last year, Windsor hosted the Memorial Cup (which our Spitfires won). VIA Rail partook in the Memorial Cup festivities by hosting a rail safety campaign and bringing kids to and from the WFCU Center festivities in an RDC set they brought down from Toronto. RDCs are beginning to get incredibly rare to see in service in North America. As of now VIA only operates them in revenue service up in Sudbury to service some remote towns in Northern Ontario. This event was the first time VIA RDCs had been sitting in the station in Windsor since the mid 1980s according to some other local railfans who have been around longer than me. The event even brought a couple of people over from Michigan. I didn't forget I had this video but I didn't upload it sooner because I had moved it to an external hard drive and just never bothered to edit it until now. These RDCs were recently rebuilt I believe which is why they were in running condition. VIA was looking into running RDC service between Windsor and at least Chatham a few years ago and tested some down this way (not all the way into Windsor) but I doubt they will be using them down here for revenue service. Would be pretty cool though. Only other RDCs in service I know of, apart from the VIA ones in Sudbury, are in BC for a remote area. Enjoy!
