VIAIR 450P-RV | Portable, Automatic Air Compressor | Product Review
When VIAIR wanted us to review their 450P-RV portable, automatic air compressor we jumped at the chance because we have heard so many other RVers rave about their VIAIR air compressors. We had been using a cheaper quality brand for a couple of years and looked forward to seeing how it compared to the VIAIR. VIAIR makes a wide range of air compressors. This 450P-RV model was specifically designed with RV needs in mind. The VIAIR air compressor is MUCH higher quality than other compressors I have used, with higher quality components, better air flow, enhanced features, greater flexibility, increased ease of use and lower noise. We are very impressed with the quality of the VIAIR air compressor and are very happy to be able to share it with you in this video. VIAIR provided this air compressor to us in exchange for our honest review.

What we like about it:
VIAIR makes some of the best quality portable, automatic air compressors on the market. If you’re an avid RVer as we are, you would likely find that either the 450P or the 450 model would work well for your needs. Both are quality products that do the job VERY well. The main difference being the volume of air flow and running time. The 400 provides a higher rate of air flow but the 450P-RV can run for longer, up to 40 minutes of continuous use.
VIAIR provided the compressor to us in exchange for our honest review.

I had the same "other compressor". It threw a rod (or similar malady} on the third usage. The Viair unit has served us, and our RV, well for over two years.

Great review! You've sold me. I looked at other reviews on some 'cheaper' models, but nothing as in-depth and convincing as yours. Thank you much!

Thank you for the info on the VAIAR 450P-RV. It is very amazing. I am in the market for a new one. The current price on Amazon without extra accessories is $285 (with accessories is $324 as of January 15, 2020). My Stanley FatMax jumper/inflator just died on me. I think it was my fault for burning it out - continuous pumping tires to 65psi on my dual axel travel trailer. However, I think for that kind of money I will go ahead and get a portable home-garage 2.5 to 4 gallon tank air compressor. I fill it with air and take it with me. It delivers 2.6 CFM or higher depending on make and model. Yes, it is not as small, or light weight, or portable as the VIAIR 450 or other similar, but I can pump those 120 psi RV and truck tires in less than 3 minutes, and of course, I can also run basic air tools with it when I am back home.

Great review, especially important that you emphasized the need for proper extended fill attachments (required for access to rear dually). Personally I just use a small 110VAC compressor that I run off inverter (or shore power if we're not boondocking). Downside of my using the 110VAC unit is that it is larger in volume, although not any heavier than the VIAIR.; the real upside, it cost a lot le$$.

This is the one I have been looking on getting but I might just go with the 400P RV I made a big mistake on trying to go with one at HF and man what a mistake, I had it less than a year and the hose blew up and trying to get another well I might as well just go with Viair thanks for the reviews.

*This is INSANELY nice.💫 **allabout.wiki/Viair** i got a Bostitch 6 gallon pancake and the regulator broke, and it was stupid loud. Also, the gauges barely worked. it wouldnt even power a die grinder. But this little dude ROCKS. Its not only 1/4 as loud as the Bositch, it works like a fine tuned machine should. Kudos to California Air Tools! This performs EXACTLY as advertised. Cant beat the price either.*

Do you hook up the cables to the battery posts alone, or do they hook around the connections on the battery posts?

I like mine, but the two air lines drive me crazy. First, they are not the same. One attaches to the compressor, while the other is only an extension (the connectors are not the same.) When you try to use both they tangle so badly you want to trash the entire thing. If you can get past that flaw, it works great. Be aware that it won't generate enough volume to seat the bead on a rim, but for adding air on the road it works fine.

Mark, since the Viair 450 works on 12 volts of power, will the compressor work when you attach the alligator clips to two, 6 volt batteries connected in a series?

I have the 400. It has more volume, and I've never had it shut down. Usually, a minute or so tops up the tires. I don't worry about draining the battery, I just clip on the trailer battery, never a problem. However, the hoses make me crazy. They are not the same. One (main) has a female connector at both ends. the extension has a male/female. Whatever. But putting both together causes them to tangle hopelessly. (see that coily spring look? They intertwine so you can't stretch them out.) Ugh! Now, I never use two hoses together.
@RoadGearReviews
@RoadGearReviews 4 года назад
Definitely need to be careful when using both to not get them intertwined, but I have found the hoses much better than what I used to have.

Does it have other uses than airing up tires? Can you use it to spray compressed air such as cleaning dirt out of the engine compartment, or use it as a spray gun or staple gun?
@RoadGearReviews
@RoadGearReviews 5 лет назад
I am not aware of an attachment for staple gun, but have seen attachments for cleaning out dirt. Have also known people using these for winterizing their RVs.
@juryrigjohn9697

Pneumatic tools are paired to compressor size by cfm rating. A nail gun for example will shoot a nail if it has enough psi but if not enough cfm you will have to wait for the compressor to build pressure back. Any tool that spins (impacts, grinders drills) needs a lot of cfm. Painting requires more. Hope that's helpful

How much trouble is it to get parts for this compressor? Lets see you replace the piston seal if that is the high wear item on this compressor.
@RoadGearReviews
@RoadGearReviews 4 года назад
Thanks for the suggestion, but I doubt I will ever need to do a replacement like that.

What is the max that this compressor will pump to? Pump up an 8 gal air tank to 200psi. The pump might not make it there or might fail in the process, but lets see how much stress it takes to break it.
@RoadGearReviews
@RoadGearReviews 4 года назад
I don't think it could do the 8 gallon 200psi. But maybe. Probably a better question for the mfg. I would not be willing to test my unit to that level.

It is my understanding that the 400 model inflates tires faster. If so, why would I want the 450. Thanks for your response.
@RoadGearReviews
@RoadGearReviews 4 года назад
400 has slightly higher inflation rate, but 450 has longer run time. Both very similar. Either one are great. We just chose the 450 as it was the newer model.

Our opinions are our own and we never accept any product for review that we would not have purchased for ourselves anyway. The fact that the product was provided to us by the manufacturer at no charge does not change the honesty or integrity of our review. Our opinions are not for sale and we were not paid to do this review. The fact is, the VIAIR is an excellent product - as you will find evidenced in the Amazon reviews from others - and deserves the positive review we gave it. Over 90% of the products we review are items we have purchased ourselves. We only review products that we feel are useful and valuable to us and our audience. Thanks.

Our opinions are our own and we never accept any product for review that we would not have purchased for ourselves anyway. The fact that the product was provided to us by the manufacturer at no charge does not change the honesty or integrity of our review. This VIAIR had been on our wish list for some time already. Our opinions are not for sale and we were not paid to do this review. The fact is, the VIAIR is an excellent product and important for proper tire inflation and safety - as you will find evidenced in the Amazon reviews from others - and is well deserving of the review that we gave it. Over 90% of the products we review are items we have purchased ourselves with our own money. We only review products that we feel are useful and valuable to us and our audience. If you knew us and were familiar with us, our content and our reputation/integrity, you would not even question this. But we understand there are others out there that will do positive reviews just to get free stuff. We do not. Rare, but true. But we understand cynicism is alive and well, especially online. For the record, ee do not have the time or interest in free stuff for the sake of it... we are only interested in sharing quality, useful products that we can genuinely recommend to our audience to enhance their experience of life on the road.
