Beautiful kayak. Great features. Would love to see non-Hobie kayaks support use of a sail, like the Hobie. It doesn't take much wind to get a kayak to move with a small sail. I use the sail on the Hobie and love it. I also use Hobie stabilizers (AMAs) for extra security and safety.

I'm interested in the Vibe Shearwater because I could buy one now with a paddle and a PDF and get on the water. I could upgrade to X-Drive pedal later if I wanted, and I could get a Bixby drop in for those long return trips after that. Kind of nice it's somewhat madular. Have you tested the Bixby water-jet drop in on that boat? Would this make a good first boat?

I love the idea of the Shearwater. I’m waiting for a local shop to get one so I can demo it. I’m going to demo the Slayer max this Saturday morning. Getting close to pulling the trigger on a peddle drive. I really liked the outback when I tested it last summer. I was A little worried about the low seat position. But after I rented a pelican pedal Drive from Marty’s last fall (about the same seat height) Had no problem with it. The pelican wasn’t bad but the rudder system seemed a little weak.

I wanted a hobie but didn't want the weight issue. Can't have a trailer, so top loading is the only option. I like how it's got a reverse too, which is the main reason I even want one. When running bridge bumpers at night i need something I can drop in reverse so I can pull a 30 inch gag out of the heavy structure.

2 things that stand out to me....1 is it doesn't look like it has much freeboard at all, a small wave would come over the side into the boat...and 2, at 1:56 watch the drive pod, super wobbly, something moving that much if its properly secured is going to cause problems in not too much time.

This boat was missing a gasket around the pod, that's why it was wobbly, I will re test it soon as well as the wave/surf test

That bite will have instant reverse, if that is important to you I think the shearwater with a hobie md 180 drive if you can find it will be a better boat though

Yet again we see the pros and cons of prop drives vs. Fin drives. Instant reverse vs shallower capabilities. To me, instant reverse on a prop drive is a game changer. I'm glad to see some of the newer companies are diving into the pedal drive game. Hopefully it helps slash some of the way prices on higher end boats.

Nice video. One question, did you notice any clumping sound when pedal at full speed? I watch two other videos about this yak, and they all have the clumping sounds when pedal. In one video, the guy even use the hobie 180 drive not the vibe x-drive, but the noise is still there. One reply suggested that it is the drive fins hit the hull at full extension.

Personally I have the V2 Hobie drive and I’ve never really felt I really needed reverse but you can flip the drive around if you really needed to

Yeah you can train yourself to do it fast, still the smoothness, speed, kick up fins and sort of instant Reverse on the new 180 MD with kick up is a winner

Great vid! It looks like it sits so high!! Did it feel as stable as say an Outback? I'm coming from a Big Game with my cheeks on the deck, when I pedaled an Outback I feel so apprehensive in rougher water. But I think that's also due to me not having my crutch aka Paddle. LOL

The hull looks fast but the pedal drive is old technology. Is the standing platform on the seat back a wasted feature? Hard to stand in a kayak at anytime but standing on the seat back would only work in VERY calm conditions.

"Everyone knows that they're faster than the standard pedal drive, and it's a lot more efficient." Don't speak for everyone, bud. Personally, Old Town's PDL is the best drive I've tried (and I've tried pretty much all of them). And speed has as much to do (if not more )with the hull shape as it does the drive.

No lever or cable to pull for reverse ruins this kayak for me. Is a real shame... this was a contender for my next kayak.

Seems slow and turns wide. I was thinking that sharp entry would slice through the water better than the outback/compass. Also I believe the old Town pdls are faster

So I settled with a 2016 outback for me and a revolution 13 for the wife. Cant wait to deck it out! Already I bought 4 21" H Rails for accessories. Hope it works well for us

Aliex Folgueira he picked it up from a dealer in Georgia so I can only assume it was a mistake somewhere down the line. He hadn’t hit anything we launched at pcola beach and like 5 minutes into the trip one of the fins just fell off the rod. I’m sure it was just a missed step but ruined a good fishing trip lol. He picked up a set up turbo fins after that

With a lot of these videos, I see people who are new to this kind of drive system for kayaks making the same mistake. They all kick their feet fairly shallow and fast. You get a more efficient power stroke out of the fins when you make longer pushes with each leg. Short strokes lose power and efficiency.

@@AliexFolgueira It's not necessarily a mistake, as you're still ultimately moving forward, which is the whole idea. I'm just saying that making longer kicks will allow you to use both less energy while you pedal AND will result in more efficient thrust from the fins. You can do whatever you like, I'm just waiting to make sure you know that you can totally save a lot of energy by making slower, longer strokes with your legs. If you or anyone else wants to know, the efficiency loss comes from how the fins work. When the fins flap, they swing through the water just like a fish's fin. There's a point in that swing where the fin is generating no thrust, which is when the fin is reversing direction. It's kind of like when you paddle. When you use a kayak paddle, you want long, smooth strokes, not short quick ones, when you're going for distance travel. Just give it a try some time!

Like I said a long time ago when the lightning was released...a good buddy of mine bought 1 and has hated it ever since it was put in his truck. Robert field doesn't even use his own kayak. Load of junk. This video proves it once again

The patents on the original mirage drive expired so that's why other companies are using it. New kayaks with 20 year old drive technology trying to undercut Hobie on price to sell kayaks.

You can use a mirage 180 but that will obviously be double the price of the vibe x drive.

you can get a 180 drive, then just buy the shearwater 125 (hull) and boom you do need the hand steerer

Not a big fan of Vibe kayaks. Ive had 2 mainly do to the price, wont buy another. They seem to be made out of thin plastic Ive had one actually crack on me. And they seem to have a lot of flex when trying to stand. Also all the parts like the hatches are kinda cheap, they wear out quick. Ive got a Lifetime Yukon I got for $400 on sale and like it a lot more then either of the Vibes Ive had. Tougher plastic and doesnt flex. Plus its made in the US not China like the Vibes are.

All legit points except the China thing. I laugh when someone makes fun of Chinese kayaks but trailers one with an imported truck or has a Chinese made fish finder.

Hmm I have not had any of those issues on my sg130, hatches are fine and the plastic is thick and heavy. There is probably some variance on plastic thickness. How exactly does a hatch wear out????

i hear this complain about kayak plastic being to thin about all kayak manufacturers.. lol people say hobie are thin, old towns are thins, nucanoue are thins and so on and and on... i wonder if people would buy a 1 in plastic all around kayak, it will weight 500# and not float.. lol
