for ppl that don’t know..BLITZING and BEING AGGRESSIVE are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS, just because someone doesn’t blitz DOES NOT mean the coach isn’t “aggressive”
Agreed. I think blitzing (and how it's done) is part of the equation but not the entire formula. For example, one of the Eagles main blitzes the past season was getting into their Penny (5-1) front and rushing all the on ball defenders trying to get one-on-one match ups. While it has it's uses, it's not as aggressive as Fangio's designs that aim to manipulate protection and force the issue by getting unblocked defenders or forcing backs to block. Like you said, relentless pursuit, attacking blockers, DBs that stick their face in traffic, trying to punch the ball out or go for strip sacks, turning into the WR when the ball is in the air are all signs of an aggressive defense.
It definitely isn’t “COMPLETELY” different lol blitzing falls under being aggressive but isn’t the only aggressive way to scheme a defense…the notion of blitzing is literally aggression 😂😂
@@terrancecollins2696I feel like you’re arguing for the sake of arguing. Obviously blitzing is aggressive, he’s just saying that just because a defensive coordinator doesn’t blitz a lot doesn’t mean he isn’t aggressive
Dolphin fan here. Philly just got one hell of a coordinator. We upgraded in every category and Dolphin total defense improved from bottom half to a top ten overall defense. Philly just hit the jackpot.
With the pieces they've added and the pieces they got back (and the ones they currently have)... Where would you say they could rank? Recent Additions: ---------------- Gardner-Johnson Bryce Huff Quinyon Mitchell Cooper DeJean Jaylix Hunt Always interested to hear an outside non-biased opinion. Congrats on OBJ
This is another great breakdown. You don't miss, my man. I often wondered why we never got another Jim Johnson along the way. Did offenses figure out the schemes? I loved those aggressive blitz schemes. Having Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent, and B Dawk back there made things a lot easier, I know.
Appreciate it! Those zone blitz heavy defenses were better at handling those "old school" offenses that used more heavy personnel and condensed formations. Teams started to spread them out and take advantage of the extra space allowed from less defenders in coverage. Fangio coached with and under Dom Capers and his zone blitz heavy teams for a long time, the bonus dropper Fangio uses is just an evolution of those zone blitz defenses to help deal with spread formations. Of course, there are coordinators like Wink Martindale that still blitz a ton, but they often paired it with a lot more man coverage. Although Brian Flores started utilizing a lot more blitz heavy zone principles this past season after learning a lot from Pat Narduzzi when he spent a year in Pittsburgh.
In fangio scheme you need good linebacker play and good safety play... Sidney may fit well in this scheme when he comes back but in the draft i feel like Howie is gonna have to change his draft pattern and take a safety pretty high..maybe one of those 2 round picks...thay 22 pick i see him goin o line which is fine but edge and safety must be addressed...get a corner in free agency if possible
Counter argument is to watch, “how one man destroyed nfl defenses”. Scheme wise I have issues but his hurdle for success will be primarily who is starting LBs and Secondary will be. If Howie dictates Nakobe Dean and Bradberry and his current safety’s then it will Fail. Oh it’s true, true!
I have been looking for a breakdown like this since Fangio got hired. Thanks man. This is exactly what I wanted. You did a great job. Got a follow from me for sure.
This move has really grown on me. I really like both of the new coordinator hires. Let's nail this draft, acquire a few veterans along the second and third levels of the defense, and possibly get a legitimate veteran #3 receiver after the inevitable annual Howie Roseman restructures.
If no one hires Wink Martindale, he'd be a awesome consultant on blitz packages based on this video. I like this model. This seems to be similar to the old Dick Lebeau Pittsburgh Steelers' fire zone blitz pressure packages utilized @ 15 years ago.
Wink actually just got hired by the University of Michigan. But that's exactly where this came from! Dick LeBeau was a DB coach for Dom Capers when he was the DC with the Steelers in the early 90s. Together they built their fire zone blitz package and when Capers left to be HC for the Panthers, he brought in Fangio to be his DC. Capers later became HC for the Texans and Fangio was his DC there too. Fangio has just added this little wrinkle to help deal with spread formations that were exploiting some of the weaknesses of the fire zone defenses that Capers/LeBeau built.
@@PhillyFilmRoom Oh wow. I didn't know that Michigan was set to hire him. Yo, thanks for that info. I didn't know that connection. I didn't know Fangio was a part of their staff. I didn't pay attention in the '90s on position coaches. I have to admit I love your channel. You're very knowledgeable about the game. Very impressive. I played LB and that was in the late 70s so I didn't focus on coverages, and things were not complex. Our defensive philosophy was "see ball get ball!" LOL :) (BTW, this is my wife's computer; why you see her name).
As a Broncos fan (3 years of Fangio defense/ head coach) i have some insight for philly fans. The defense is gunna look bad early (hard to learn) and wont look great until year 2...many players cannot fit this scheme (expect many defensive roster changes on defense after year 1). You'll be soft in between the 20s and lock down in the redzone. Players generally don't like Vic and refer to him as "old school", a "curmudgeon", and more of "you fit my scheme" rather than a "make the scheme fit you" type of guy. Even the most easy to get along guys like Justin Simmons (former all pro fangio saftey) doesn't want to play in philly BECAUSE of Vic and Justin is a Walter Payton Man of the year kind of guy. You will need ELITE safety play for it to work also (he asks a lot from his safeties) and if you don't, expect BIG gashes in between the 20's.
I think Blankenship will surprise a lot of people in this scheme. He doesn’t get enough credit, he had the 4th highest pff grade out of his entire draft class mid-season
Yes Fangio ask Lamar and the Ravens about Fangio they put 56 points on his great defense other teams will also adjust to the Eagirls defense and give a hard tackle on Smith and Brown as the fumble away catches that Hurts won't like
Reddick and Nolan Smith are those hybrid edge defenders that work well in this type of defense. But they need to get faster at LB for sure and add another piece at safety.
The problem is that yes Vic Fangio came up with all the soft coverage stuff but he adjusts his coverages accordingly but his disciples don't and instead aim to protect their defense against explosive plays which may help your ppg but limits the ceiling of your defense
Oh shut up. When eagles went to super bowl, u wasnt complaining? Vic fangio is way better than gannon. Eagles dont have good corners to play a heavy blitz scheme.
I’m all for giving it another year with the Fangio scheme with the man himself….however….if we have the same fall apart season we did this year on defense then we need to shy away from it and try something else. As it was illustrated in your video though I think it will be a good call, but only because we have the actual Fangio, if we were just getting a disciple then I would be tuning out next year lol
For as long as he has been around, dont you think the rest of the NFL kinda knows him really well ? How much has he changed the core points of his system ?
Spags is doing pretty good. He’s been around for a while too. I get what you’re saying tho. That’s how I felt when we got Kellen Moore because cowboys might be familiar with his schemes too
By that logic, we should’ve had the greatest offense and defense in the league last year with basically two first time coordinators on both sides of the ball. These guys have continued success in the league for a reason; they have extremely high football IQ, they make the most out of the personnel they have, and they’re not afraid to make adjustments.
It's not like he's the only long tenured coach in the NFL. Belichick has been running similar variations of his system for close to 40 years now and they've consistently had really good defenses. Really, we overrate scheme too much because it's easy to put coaches/schemes in buckets and say this is the scheme they run. Teaching, game planning, adjusting within game and getting players to execute the system are far more important than the actual system. These coaches all add bits and pieces to their defenses over the years too.
I mean, I just showed you and then provided stats to back it up. And I get it about dropping edge rushers, different coaches have different styles and philosophies about it. It has been a very successful strategy for a long time though with it happening a significant amount under coaches like Belichick, Mike McDonald, Jesse Minter, Saban, Kirby Smart, and all of those great Ravens and Steelers defenses of the 2000s just to name a few. Even Jim Johnson dropped edge rushers in his zone blitz schemes.
