Vice is the condition Saint Paul was referring to when he said, "I do not do the good that I want to do, but I do the very evil that I hate." (Romans 7:19)
Saint Thomas does not think that vice can coexist with grace. Yet, if you have a vice and have come to believe in the incarnation of Jesus Christ and his suffering, death and resurrection, then you have come to believe in the abundant mercy of God.

The same happens to me, but what I do is to turn on subtitles. It is much easier to read English than to listen and understand it. Hope it helps you!

I love the consistent visual language you have built in to represent virtue and vice these last few videos. The visual metaphors have been great at reinforcing the message you are communicating. Thank you for this video series as these last few episodes have helped me understand were I am on my journey.

How might Aquinas view addiction and its attendant acts--e.g., alcoholism and excessive drinking? Would it be a special kind of habit?
@dalelerette206
@dalelerette206 9 месяцев назад
Saint Thomas Aquinas taught the body-soul composite is of matter and soul so it differs from typical material forms. Typical material forms are only found in matter and thus depend on matter. The body-soul composite is the result of the dual nature of humanity, which bridges the spiritual and material worlds by means of its intellect and its animality. It's so hard when you are so in touch with your own emotions and the people around you are so emotionally damaged they no longer know how to feel their own soul. I suppose one could say their sin has mortally wounded their soul leaving the beastly nature to awaken by virtue of the seven deadly sins.

Hi Thomistic Institute I like your videos a lot! What do you think about the theological role of prayer? Is it something we have to do just because of Scriptures or did Saint Thomas see something else in it? Thanks!
@ThomisticInstitute
@ThomisticInstitute 4 года назад
Consider listening to this lecture: soundcloud.com/thomisticinstitute/fr-white-op-introduction-to-mental-prayer-feb-2017-bloomfield-ct Also, a doctoral candidate, Josh Revelle, is writing his dissertation on the role of prayer in St. Thomas's theological method. he'd be a great resource for this question.

What if then a life of vice enables one to take care of their family and letting go of that life means the family starves ?

I have a question is anyone who has a vice in a state of mortal sin?
@ThomisticInstitute
@ThomisticInstitute 3 года назад
Not necessarily. A vice is a habit that disposes a person to sinful actions. It is probably the result of personal sins, but having a "vicious" disposition of soul is not itself a sin. So it is possible to repent after a period of repeated bad acts (which lead to the development of a vice in the soul) and to be forgiven -- and hence to be in a state of grace -- and still to have a vice rooted in the soul. Of course, God can (and often enough does) grant special supernatural graces to help us overcome our vices, but it is possible to be forgiven of sin and in a state of grace and still be left with vices. In fact, it is probably rather common!

Hi, I have a question about what type of sin Aquinas would categorize the fear of missing out as. For example, a person spends an excessive amount of money on an unnecessary item just to not be left out. Thanks #askafriar

If St. Thomas thinks it is always a sin to lie, does it mean that a farmer who is lying to a Nazi officer about the Jews he is hiding in barn is commiting a sin? It sounds counterintuitive. Can anyone offer an explenation?
@EasternRomeOrthodoxy
@EasternRomeOrthodoxy 8 месяцев назад
🇷🇺☦️🤝☪️🇵🇸Exactly what wanted to comment, and yes, I don't understand why they deliberately ignored that issue (if not deliberately then it is very strange), but although the holy Aquinas isn't our Saint (because of theological errors), I can assure you that there's no chance in hell he grouped those kind of lies with the rest as 'sin', I mean not a chance, since you have to be a demon to do such a thing. Just like Jews are allowed to break the Sabbath in case of saving life, then the same thing goes for that too
