I am so glad that Victor Herbert and Antonin Dvorak were in New York City at that school and Dvorak was able to hear this piece. He then proceeded to write his own Cello Concerto, which is probably the standard by which Cello Concertos are judged. Thanks, Victor, for providing the inspiration! I really like this piece, too.
This is the last piece my brother played before leaving to college... it's very special :) Thank you! It's the most romantic movement of a cello concerto, in my opinion
I do not understand why you find it hard to believe. Herbert was a fine cellist and composer, and the 2nd mov(Bminor) is truly beautiful........after all, you must remember there is only one Dvorak!.....genius is hard to come by.
I agree to a large extant with Rossinisan09 in that the cadenza here was really not necessary and J. Lloyd-Webber's rendition omits it altogether with nothing lost. I've personally never thought cadenzas belonged in music of the Romantic era in the first place. (Frankly, I also find them annoying in Classical-era concertante music as well)
