Today's episode of The Old Man and The Three is a long time coming as we welcome in Miami Heat guard, Victor Oladipo. In this interview, we dive deep into the ups and downs of Vic's career and how his mindset has changed over the years. Topics include: Training in Southern California, his impression of Chet Holmgren defending NBA all-stars like Kevin Durant and Joel Embiid in pick-up games, the various injuries he suffered with The Indiana Pacers and The Miami Heat, getting traded from The Orlando Magic and The Oklahoma City Thunder, how his perspective changed after being traded and injured so many times, how devastating it was to suffer two significant injuries after finally achieving his goals of being THE GUY on an NBA team, how he had to change his entire attitude towards life after these injuries, his background of always being overlooked in high school, his Tom Crean recruitment story with Indiana, what he learned by playing with Russell Westbrook on The Oklahoma City Thunder, Victor recalls playing against The Philadelphia 76ers during one of JJ Redick's best games in Philly, Vic's takeaways from going toe-to-toe with LeBron James and The Cleveland Cavaliers in The Eastern Conference Finals, discussing if that was the best version of LeBron, discussing "Heat Culture" and so much more.

amazing content, for the one time. Lets give Tommy his flowers. JJ is incredible and has an incredible experience in the highest level of basketball in the planet, but to have someone whos able to take the backseat on topics and also drive home really hard hitting questions (even light ones "how long you done karaoke") Tommy is a legendary fit. The way he assists this podcast by allowing easy carefree informative energy in the room, feels like alot to do with him. Love the pod appreciate you both keeping this amazing show going!

The detail Vic went into talking about his injury was special. From the mental challenges to the physical challenges. Having to subconsciously adjust his game to “make it work.” Even something as simple as not wanting to drive for more than 30 minutes because of how grueling rehabbing and injury is. This is definitely TOP 5 interviews JJ and Tommy

Bro, this Episode it me hard.. I’ve broke my ACL twice, and hearing Olapido’s story is like, bro thats me! All the bad days, the “Dark Place”, the responsability to get better and better everyday. Can relate to Vic more than you can imagine. Tore my patellar my junior year of D1 basketball, right before he tore his quad tendon. Very similar, gruesome injury to the quad tendon rupture he had. Everyone wants to categorize it like an ACL tear but it it much harder to be effective on the court after recovery. When he tells his story I can imagine my 20 year old self going through the same battles and emotions. Great pod. Forever a fan of Vic.

Ngl I didn't think this interview was going to be so good but I feel like Oladipo feelin to show everyone his best basketball this year. I always associated him with that Chris Smoove saying but it was so so cool to hear Vic and JJ break down not only a game they had together but the play call & tendencies that set it up. Jj you do your best work out of a suit & I only watch those BS lamestream media shows if you are on as a commentator. Post drama or setbacks, it seemed like players had to act as prey to the ignorant & loud to try and do well under the bright lights but there's a better way on your pod & point forward now or even just great players to tell their story in general.

I commented on the clip but I want to say this again, as an athletic trainer I love this convo and Vic opening up about his physical and mental journey of an injury. People do not understand the mental toll it can take on someone when their body is their livelihood. Should really put in perspective guys like KD and Klay, just as popular examples, who have had brutal injuries to literally coming back the same player. Respect the guys who are always on the floor ✊🏼 awesome interview JJ

41:20 I haven't listened to Vic's answer, but I have one of my own from teaching different college students (I taught math at a community college for 15 years). Every person has to decide for themselves that they want it, and a lot of guys who reach the top of whatever league they're playing in feel like they've arrived and they don't necessarily slack off, per se, but they're less motivated to keep evolving, keep adapting, keep learning. They might still be trying very hard, but they haven't had the experience of trying hard and _not_ being the best - when they try hard, they win MVP of whatever league they're in, they become top 20 recruits, people laud them and their talent. It can be very hard to get away from that since it's worked so well for so long, so even if they really do have the drive to be the best, success can breed complacency, sure, but it can also breed conservatism (not in the political sense, but in the sense of resistance to change). I used to ask my very best students how I could get my other students to be more like them. What were their best habits? To what did they attribute their own success? Were there things they would do differently if they could go back? The answers I got were all over the map, but the best one was "Give them a couple years out of high school. Let them figure out that they really want to be here." Maybe it's just because that was what I already thought, but it seemed like the best answer I ever got. If they want it and they want to change and they want to earn it, they're going to be successful. If not, not.
