I saw this movie in the summer of 1983 at a quaint little movie theater in Santa Monica called The Aero.... On a Tuesday night for a dollar.. and I instantly fell in love with this film... It's interesting how movies like this can give you messages that stick with you all of your life.. I was almost 22 when I saw this for the first time and I watch it maybe once every decade just to get a refresher... It was very rewarding when I turned my three grown kids on to this last year and sat back and watched them enjoy this little gem
The one that dropped him off didn't Swoon!! That was a great scene also !! LOL had me laughing ..I'd kind of been on receiving end of that a time or 2 also or ok..1000...
Just magnificent. In a film full of outstanding moments, this is a standout scene. Touching, bittersweet, funny and just frickin’ great! Makes you wish you were there.
Notice how at 00:30 Mac is the only moving figure while everyone around him has already found a home … and how he tries to speak Scottish but fails, but Roddy still understands and appreciates Mac’s language. Not to get all film studies, but this scene encapsulates the genius heartbreak of the movie.
The idea that this song, ‘Victor’s Song,’ was something he did every ceilidh, it was expected by everyone and the night wouldn’t have been complete without it...it’s just too achingly sweet. A great, great film. And an outstanding scene.

First watched this movie as a 14 year old kid many years ago , I thought it was brilliant then and its still brilliant now . Totally captivating , a magical movie .
A great scene in one of my favorite movies. I love how the village loved Victor's visits and how his friendship with them transcended nationality. He was simply one of them returning after being away for a while. This is what Mac was hoping for.
Local hero was not a film that clicked for me the first way through. It has now been a few a months and i can't help but think about this filme every week of my life. It somehow has all the questions and all the answers. "Guess i've always been a rolling stone"
There is also a small irony here, that Mac is living in the Texas "the lonestar state". So it is also "Mac's Song" as much as it is Victor's song. And who is actually the "Local Hero"? I can make a case for Marina, Mac, Mr Happer, Ben, Gordon. What a beautiful movie.
Amazing movie. So glad I found it. Could you recommend something similar? With that kind of subtle atmosphere, amazing soundtrack, good humour and depth. Its so hard to find a good movie these days.

George Ovcinikov The Secret Life of Walter Mitty has a very similar feel to it. Both are considered “comedies” but I feel that term is a real disservice to them.
This is a movie that I have to watch about twice a year.. since I first saw it probably in 91 ish. If you like this movie, and don't mind subtitles ...I also recommend 'Adam's Apples'
The actor is portraying a Russian trawlerman. USSR so not a Texan. he heard the song on the radio. It would have been banned in the USSR. Western decadence,!!!
