Roberto Bertero at the organ of Turin’s Santuario della Consolata (Church of the Virgin of the Consolation).
This video is featuring the Alleluia by esteemed Swiss Canadian artist Victor Togni.
A work that will also highlight the interesting possibility of using the split registers in a historic organ like that of the Consolata. In the canon section I have in fact decided to use the Clarone 4’ Bassi of the Grand’Organo, coupled with the Pedal, in dialogue with the Ottavino 2’ Soprani, played with the right hand.
This possibility of using two totally different registers in a single keyboard allows to broaden the timbre palette and to make up for the typical lack of independent registers of the Pedal (at least in Italy) at the time.
Victor Togni was born on 1935 in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) of Swiss parents.
His musical studies were begun at the Abbey of Einsiedeln in Switzerland and continued at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, the Ecole Normale de musique and the National Conservatory in Paris, the Royal College of Music in London, and the Geneva Conservatory.
His teachers included Fernando Germani, Olivier Messiaen, Marcel Dupré, Rolande Falcinelli, Jean Langlais and Jean-Jacques Grunenwald.
Togni's reputation as a performer and improviser gained international recognition through his many recitals and broadcasts in cities of Europe, Africa, England, the United States and Canada, where he was a frequent recitalist in musical centres and for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
He was first an organist, composer, conductor, improviser and harpsicordist. He had passion for jazz as well.
On March 29, 1965, he was on his way to Montreal to record a recital for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation when the car in which was riding with his producer was hit by a transport truck near Gananoque, Ontario, and he was killed.
So, unfortunately, he died very young, at the age of only 30.
Nevertheless, he had a phenomenal career. Here are some of the awards he received:
First prize improvisation contest - Casavant prize
A.G.O. Convention, Philadelphia 1964
Premier prix de virtuosite, Geneva Conservatory 1963
Prix Otto Barblan, Geneva 1963
ARCM London, England
Welcome to this RU-vid channel aimed at providing some quality online documentation concerning the "Camillo Guglielmo Bianchi" organ located in the Consolata Sanctuary, Turin (Italy).
Audio or audio-video file will be regularly uploaded, all recorded LIVE.
The sound will be captured with Zoom H5 audio recorder (96kHz / 24bit), while footage will be filmed with Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.
The intent is to create a database of the musical literature performed by me, titular organist in this prestigious sanctuary, right during the religious services along the Liturgical Year or during the organ auditions, between one Mass and another.
