Is there a statistical category for 'blocks and regains possession'? Because if it doesn't exist, someone needs to create it to quantify how much more valuable Wemby's blocks are than anyone else's. So many blocks (in fact most of Victor's early in the season) end up going into the crowd, but Wemby is just pinning shots against the backboard or flipping it to a teammate. It's absolutely insane how he can get more blocks per game than anyone else in the league, and then decide "nah that's not enough" and so regain possession on almost all of them.
not only that mate, players avoid to even attempt a fg when wemby is in the paint, its so often now that they simply pass it out for a 3 point shot. if the players were to attempt as many fg in the paint as with other defensive players, wemby would have EVEN more blocks
Some poeple said "it because his height and length" And also some people said "dont overhype" Just compare yourself To Messi or Ronaldo. Or compare yourself as some Sport Fan
No, it's pretty much his height. He gets beat to the rim all the time. There are multiple breakdowns on RU-vid that show he plays bad defense, but his length saves it.
@@JoshNBANFL “keep saying” like this isn’t my only comment about the situation lol. But for example if my Timberwolves were 20-60 I would not be claiming Rudy as dpoy
Imagine if this guy ends up getting crazy muscular like Giannis or Lebron did?😳 I definitely wouldn’t doubt him averaging 35 ppg 15 Reb 5 blocks per game some day. He really does have all the potential in the world to be the GOAT.
@@Alijahboi he don’t need the muscle. He’ll still be a top 1-3 player in the league and very likely the #1 player in the league even without the muscle. But if you added a Giannis/lebron amount of muscle on him, he would be #1 in the league by a whole whole lot, and possibly even #1 in all of nba history by a whole lot. There has never been an nba player with this much potential before
This dude is fundamentally changing the game single handedly. I've never seen someone of that tall so nimble and fast. Is this the start of another Spurs dynasty?
0:33 Look at the immediate change of space with his footwork. It's just so much more than the height, the balance, footwork ,anticipation, he's a DPotY his rookie season. Unreal!
His block against Maxey in OT (or whenever it was) was about as close as possible to being a legal block, he’ll probably end up having a lot of plays where he barely hits it off the glass
Russell was considered a better defender than Chamberlain. When Russell blocked a shot, the block tended to become the outlet pass. When Chamberlain blocked one, the offense retained possession because the ball went out of bounds.
I LOOOOVE it when some idiots out there are like, “Of course he gets a lot of blocks, he’s 7’4!!” And then you’re just like, “Ok, so why wasn’t Yao Ming an amazing shot blocker?” Then they’re like, “I mean, he’s not just 7’4, he also has an 8’ wingspan!” And then you’re like, “So why wasn’t Tacko Fall an amazing shot blocker?” Then they go silent.
That's it. ofc with this body he had to defend well, he had to guard two guys in same time, he had to take rebounds, pass well, dunk often... this is the theory with this body. But so many tall guys have to do that and they don't... so many musclemen have to do that and they don't... Zion, Holmgren, Gobert, Embiid, Bol Bol etc... even KD, I mean especially in defense ! So many great NBA players can do one of these things, but they don't or not all of this... We have to admit, they still great but they are'nt Wemby. And like he said, this is just the beginning.
Angles that players are used to taking and have a 'shot' at scoring is completely off the table with Wemby. He makes players play a different game than they are used to. Wild
He rly love basketball. Both defense and attack, he truly like what he does, where he play. Thats the difference. He put his freaking heart into the court every match.
Tyrese Maxey said he got to play 1 on 1 against Wemby sometime, and Wemby wanted to only play defense. Maxey said it's the first time he ever saw a basketball player do that 🤣
I was hooked on steph's insane 3 pointer videos thought nothing will come close to that ever. But then wemby cane and just started swatting and boy is it fun. Cant wait for the next season. THE SEASON OF SWATTING. 👽👽
We are so blessed to witness the unfolding of a future 🐐. He will go down in NBA history as the greatest shot blocker of ALL TIME! See me in 5 to 10 years from now.
Wemby should win the award of ROY as well the DPOY this season. What he´s doing is insane! I think the spurs will win the title in the next 3 or 4 years.
New Stat for the League: OFFENSIVE BLOCKS - blocks shot with possession of ball and coverted to points, DEFFENSIVE BLOCKS - blocks shots but opposing team still has possession of the ball.
This kid is just so incredible for so many reasons. He doesn't just get fingers on a ball and mess up shots. The amount of contact, redirection, and control he gets on these blocks make them practically steals! His blocks are out of the world, and it's just his rookie season! It would almost be enough on its own to make him a valuable pick, but then we add on that he's shooting 46% FG, 32% from 3, getting tons of rebounds? He's honestly such a menace. I would be terrified to go up against this guy. Teams are going to need unique gameplans just to work around his play and even then, he's still just such a solid player, he can bring value regardless. I especially think he carries his height in an unassuming way and that surprises people a lot. The way he holds himself when he's in an athletic posture disguises his size. So when people are going up near him thinking they're in the clear, the amount he can elevate just by literally standing up straight is surprising a lot of shooters and drives. It happened constantly in this clip, it's going to keep happening. I'm no spurs fan but this kid is amazing and I can't wait to see his continued growth and potential.
Nice spotting his deceptive ability. You're right. He crazy agile, and it seems like crouches very low before completely reaching out of nowhere to snatch shots out of the air. His athletic posture though, while unassuming, Is also made to tower over opponents and smother them when guarding them, So he can take up physical space and impose himself when he wants too..
He also make some good assist and he will improve. So, even if others teams make an anti wemby plan, this kid can pass to his teamates. Wemby need another good defender to help the team when he will be on the bench and a good pg.
@@noobtube373 always good to see a person who doesn't lie saying a guy from an obsolete era is better than a way More advanced one, most who say Wilt is so great watch highlights only, I have seen full games from his era they look trash even compared to the 90s way More skilled era so why say wilt was better and could do great now If he couldn't?
Sonetimes i witness something special and feel privileged to do so. Watching this kid play basketball is one of those things. He is the future greatest
Didn't expect my countries only NBA player, Jakob Poeltl, to be featured that often in a highlight-reel video. On the receiving end, I must add. ;) Der arme Jakob. ;)
wemby having a blocks vid this long as a rookie is scary for the league. also, hakeem played 18 seasons and has 3830 blocks. at his current rate, wemby has the potential to pass hakeem for most blocks in nba history in just his 14th season.
I think that the most important thing of all that, is that he is really fun to watch. I think he is the first player, since along time ago, to give that stuff, even Curry or Lebron havent that thing. The fun x factor.
He's like a more athletic version of Bill Russell. Notice how his blocks keep the ball in play (e.g. he catches it or sends it toward his teammates) AND how he reacts so quickly afterwards either leading a break or making a great outlet pass. What a player. Along with all the other greats in the NBA right now he makes games so fun to watch. Can't wait to see what he does going forward.
Ralph Sampson was exactly the same height, and we All know how that story ended. There's been ALOT of Tall guys come and go, but only ONE who plays like Wemby. Gotta give him RESPECT. 💯
usually its scoring for this kind of length video highlights but fk this is only blocks. LMAO casuals saying its normal and should be expected because of his height and length but you need to consider that this is also a rookie and shot blocking requires IQ and timing. Hes playing against Pros.
