Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg was the granddaughter of Queen Victoria and expected to be a grand lady herself someday. Her love marriage turned sour because of something completely out of her control. She lost her throne but was at least able to have some peace towards the end of her life.

Victoria Eugenia was not a miserable queen, she had a miserable life what is quite different.

Interesting how Alphonso’s Catholicism and Edward’s Protestantism didn’t prevent them from womanizing.

The church Alphonso pointed out to Ena was called Santa Maria

Contemporary reports remark that Alfonso was good looking and "handsome". I fail to see it! In fact I find him unattractive and sickly looking himself (not that I'm suggesting he was unwell)

I have the same opinion, he just looks ugly and just kind of.. looks off in a way lol

Well, the nicest thing I can say about Alfonso as a husband is, he wasn't as bad as Henry VIII... & even then, Bloody Henry was arguably actually nicer overall to Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves & Katherine Parr than Alfonso was to Ena! I have to agree with the title; she had a miserable life & none of it was her fault. Even before Victoria & haemophilia, women in the Hanoverian dynasty seemed to luck out in life- George I & George IV were also _spectacularly_ awful husbands- & even Victoria's female descendants who weren't carriers often had horrible lives, like her eldest daughter Vicky: she, her daughter Charlotte & granddaughter Feodora all had porphyria like George III, but that's another long & tragic story... I dunno, I think some Mediaeval royal women had better & happier lives, or at least they were no worse off- some actually had decent husbands, if nothing else. Very interesting tho, sad as Ena's story is.

When I first started researching Ena, I thought he was much worse than Henry VIII. At least Henry had the decency to get rid of his wives, Alfonso just kept Ena with him and assumed she'd always be a great ally, which she was. Truly a very sad story, if they'd divorced like Ernst Louis of Hanover and Victoria Melita, who knows what kind of life Ena might have had. I don't think she'd be the type to leave Alfonso, though.

She didn't deserve to be that unhappy. She was stunning, though!

@@TheRoyalWomen in my personal opinion she is the most beautiful out of Victoria's granddaughters although Victoria's favorite was Alix (Alexandra Feodorovna) she tried to encourage a romance between Alix and Albert Victor but Alix wanted to marry Nikolai she met him juring the wedding of her sister and Nikolai's brother Sergey Victoria allowed the marriage because Alix decisiveness impressed her

@@TheRoyalWomen Queen Victoria considered Alix (Alexandra Feodorovna) her favorite granddaughter because well.... she used the girl as an emotional crutch after the death of Prince Albert

When she momentaneously returned to Spain there was a big crowd welcoming her. She returned as a Queen in the middle of Franco’s dictatorship.

It wasn’t just because of possible hemophilia it was because of Ena lineage. She may have been Queen Victoria granddaughter but she was a Battenberg. A morganatic and broke family who were royally connected and handsome. German Royals were really snobbish about that because when your the Broke prince of what’s essentially a small town, your title is all you have.

A personal favorite of mine Victoria Eugene Julia Ena princess Beatrice wanted to name her Eua a Welsh name but the guy ho wrote her name down misspelled Eya for Ena so they all started calling her Ena her family and the common people alike she was named after her grandmother and Eugenia de Montiho Empress of France Ena's mother-in-law and biggest enemy's name is Maria Christina Henrietta Desideria Felicitas Reineria Infant Gonsallo died in a car crash he would have survived if not for his Hemophilia his wounds themselves were not life threatening but he died from excessive blood loss plus the anarchist ho tried to kill her and Alphonso was named Matthew Morall plus a bit more info on Eugenia de Montiho she went to Turkey and met the current Valide Pertevniyal Sultan ho actually for some reason slapped her across the face plus Ena's brother Leopold died from while fighting in Africa he died because of his Hemophilia Ena's best friend was her cousin Beatrice ho was actually married to Alphonso's cousin Alphonso de Orléan 5th Duke of Galeria Beatrice was younger sister to Maria Queen of Romania Alphonso actually had 4 illegitimate kids 2 boys and 2 girls from 3 different ladies his kids were named Roger de Vilmolline (from the French aristocrat Mellanie de Dorthan) Anna Maria Teresa Ruiz Moragas and Leandro Alphonso Ruiz Moragas (from the Spanish actress Carmen Ruiz Moragas and lastly he had a daughter Juanna Alphonsa Milan y Quinoness de Leon from Beatrice Noone plus Alphonso's full name was Alphonso Maria Jaime Isidro Pascual Anthonio plus when he was younger Juan Carlos was known as The Idiot Prince and one last thing the next Spanish monarch will be Felippe's only daughter Infanta Leonor she will be the first Spanish Queen since Isabella II

Actually Ena's Godmother Eugenia de Montiho (she was named after her) was not even at the baptism in person she was represented by Frederica of Hanover plus Ena herself was known as The Jubilee Baby because she was born in the 50th year of Queen Victoria's reign
