New subscriber! So happy to find you. I'm working on decorating a 100-year-old estate and the theme is Alice in wonderland and I am doing Alice's bedroom in a Victorian style using many of these decorations that you've shown here so it's quite the inspiration to let me know. I was on the right track and you subscribe or so happy to meet you😊

As a kid we used to make the popcorn and cranberry garland. After Christmas, the tree and the garland went out back in the woods to feed the creatures. Awesome video!

They should also bring back the day humans did NOT destroy their body with tattoos and will be sorry for doing when they get older and finally release how stupid and ugly it is and what it says about the person that would mutilate their body against Gods will
Год назад
Bring back which day? Did you know that as far back as 600 AD Christians were getting tattoos of crosses and fish and other Christian symbols? There's still Razzouk tattoo shop in Jerusalem whose family has been tattooing Christan pilgrims across from the church of St John the Baptist since 1300 AD. Tattoos and body modifications have been a part of human life in many cultures for (at least) thousands of years. I don't consider myself religious, but if my body were a temple I suppose I'm just putting up some fabulous wall art :)

I'm a big fan of the phrase "vintage style not vintage values". I like to appreciate the beautiful things of the past like the clothes and hand crafts, but leave all the terrible parts back where they belong.

My grandmother, who was born in 1922 would have to agree with this sentiment, as would her mother who was born in the 1880s. That said, the aesthetic was quite lovely.

To be fair to those first attempt x-mas cards, I'd send the punnishing Santa or the bear-hugging polar bear with an inside punchline as a joke card even today. And I feel like you could still get an xmas card today with a cute polar bear embracing a snow-shoer alongside the words "bear hugs for Christmas" or a bunch of happy songbirds flying in a dark night bringing in the season of light with golden lighted candles. The nuances of art style lead to humour, but the visual symbolism isn't so nuts, really. The Christmas-to Easter Christian calendar arc is about birth and rebirth of Jesus- a baby, being born(reborn) at Christmas as nature continues to birth wonders in spite of climate obstacles, so the egg card I understand too. It's, by far, the creepiest and least relevant today, given eggs became more of an Easter symbol in the end (after all they ARE laid in spring). And of course, in spite of the continual jokes about "naughty" and "nice" lists, Christmas tradition has largely moved out of the brief trend of the punishing Santa or Santa's helper narrative, so that kid going into the bag is a sign of changing values. Even the frogs, unseasonal though they seem, are in the red-green colour pallet of now-traditional Christmas decor. It pains me to say it, as I'm a hardcore cat fan, but the cat couple is the card that shows the least vision of any kind viewed via hindsight. It isn't seasonal, seeming to assume that Christmas, like any other holiday, is just about showing cute pictures of animals as happy stand-ins for posh socializers generally.

Wow, thanks for that history insight! I didn't know some of these. It's interesting to see which symbols and designs lasted to today and which just didn't make it!
@myragroenewegen5426
@myragroenewegen5426 2 года назад
@ It's all speculation -- the Victorians invented a bunch of tradition very quickly around weddings and Christmas and funerals and you-name-it, with their penchant for the sentimental, moralistic and fervently religious stuff. It's just so much fun to imagine historic times like that, when people were creatively groping around and suddenly created traditions that became spontaneously "old" and "timeless" and are now so intuitive that it's hard to imagine what else could have been. I so enjoyed your calming Christmas spirit.

The popcorn and cranberry garland. If you want to make them last for years thread red beads and popcorn onto your thread and when your done hang it up outside and spray varnish clear coat over it.

For some reason I was very surprised that the victorians already had glitter! Do you know what it was made from?
3 года назад
I'm not exactly sure, possibly some kind of foil? Glitter has been around in one form or another for a surprising amount of time!

Take your broken vintage ornaments & crush them with a rolling pin to create vintage glass glitter. Also check RU-vid videos for vintage glitter diy’s
@mungia1500
@mungia1500 2 года назад
I believe that glitter (before the kind we have today) was made out of glass and from Germany around turn of the century. It’s also my understanding that glitter was around in some form before that.
