My name is Amanda, and I am a theatrical and historical costumer living my best bustle gown dreams! Check back for fun historical experiments, fun facts, and tutorials.
I'm gonna stiffen fabric then seal it with this stuff I use for paper beads. I'm gonna have to use a color that matches my blonde hair. I don't want to see the backing thru it if it's not perfectly tightly woven. Gold silk would be cool. Maybe some decoration on the fabric. I guess I could do a picture of myself. I sepia or something
Great job! I’ve used thrift store sheets to make mock ups for 14th and 15th centuries clothes, but they turned out so goid that I ended using them for undergarments. Also, why didn’t I think of tracing patterns with the aid of my dress form? 😊
Dressed in 1870s costume, I give garden tours at a museum for school field-trips--and I burn easily. Carrying a parasol has been awkward because I need my hands. Thanks for this creative, clear, super visual set of instructions and for the resources. Loved the music--and by the way, are you aware that your hands are utterly beautiful?
Thanks for preserving a piece of the enduring human spirit... i know these were intended to be personal, but sometimes sharing things originally personal holds an extra piece of magic.
Hi Amanda. Great video. Thank you. I have a question. I'm wanting to add lace to the bottom of a midi dress to add about a foot in length to the overall length. Should the lace be gathered with a basting stitch before sewing onto the dress? I've never done this before, and unsure how to do it. I think I'd like it to look like a lace slip beneath the dress. Any ideas? Thanks for your time 😊

It just depends on how you'd like the lace to look - you could certainly sew it on flat, or pre-gathered (although gathered lace will probably not work so well with this technique).
I love everything about this, i need to know, for myself, that youve since made a corset that doesnt do that diamond gapping in the back. Not for nitpicking purposes, just for the longevity of the garment, a diamond shaped or curved gap is going to bend the bones on the lacing strips and that can cause them to wear through the fabric or even break. Yes, even flat steels, yes even zipties. Loving these videos and cant wait to see what you make next!
Aaaaaaaaa! The music is way too loud! Just keep it soft in the background without turning it up between your speaking. It detracts from your narration.
This video was absolutely fantastic. Loved your outfit. Clear and concise instructions 😊 My sweet Victorian grandma and I would have had so much fun watching and making. She left me all kinds of treasures; now I know what to do with some of it. I can't think of a better way to remember and honor her. Thank you so very much. Hats off to you.
I’m new to sewing and I’m making my mother a pair of pajamas. I just bought a beautiful lace trim that to my delight will go perfectly with my project. And she will love it. I had no clear idea how to sew the trim on the pajamas, without going through a lot of work! Using bonding, interfacing etc. very confusing. I can’t thank you enough for simplifying the process for me. I’m excited now to finish my project more than ever!
Thank you for sharing these wonderful idea's... Since covid we are back at hard time's, so I always look for affordable way's to save... I just love the popcorn and cranberry garland...I will be making that this year...seems like we're getting back to basics , and I try to bake cookies to give for small presents 🎄 Hope you all have a beautiful Christmas 🎄 🎅 🥂
My Christmas wish is for you to someday soon hav a big beautiful old Victorian home of your own! Sending you love and best wishes for this holiday season! You are absolutely dear! 🎄♥️🎄♥️🎄♥️🎄
Thank you for the resources I teach at a senior center arts and crafts and these ornaments are just so lovely! Thank you for the ideas! It would also be pretty with old fashioned illustrations of reindeer or you could cut out the cats too and put little scarves on them !
You did such a wonderful job- it is so beautiful! Do you remember what type of interfacing you used? I know you said heavy duty but could you be more specific? I’ve only ever used lightweight fusible and am so intimidated by the many different types

Thank you! I don't remember exactly what it's called, but it was the heaviest thing I could find at Joanns. It feels like a stiffened piece of felt. I think I just looked through the interfacing shelf until I found the thickest and sturdiest feeling option.
New subscriber! So happy to find you. I'm working on decorating a 100-year-old estate and the theme is Alice in wonderland and I am doing Alice's bedroom in a Victorian style using many of these decorations that you've shown here so it's quite the inspiration to let me know. I was on the right track and you subscribe or so happy to meet you😊
I am so glad to have come across your channel. Thank you for the great content and tidbits of learning you throw in while demonstrating! I am wondering what size covered buttons you used. Locally it looks like 3/4in is going to be my smallest option. Thank you! Amy

Thanks so much! They're 5/8", purchased from here: www.etsy.com/shop/everythingribbons?ref=yr_purchases§ion_id=5492220
Thank you so much for the tip regarding sleeve construction. I always struggle with the gathering of the sleeves and this flat construction method is going to help me soooo much! And I too sew in my undergarments including corset during the fitting process. It just takes too long to change in and out of it when you don't have another person to help with the fitting all at once. I also love the plaid! Thank you again!
I’ve only had one bad encounter. Went to get something from my car while at an event and a man approached me and asked for a cigarette then asked “are you a freak” and “do you do porn.” I don’t go out alone anymore in costume.
under no circumstances can i recommend Truly victorian. The woman is racist! just look at how she handled that Sil Road desaster a while ago. on top of that i was treated way different by her while going by my maiden name which is non english, than she did my fellow english named costumers.
I love that book. The apportioning rulers work really well. I have to keep in mind that I am shorter waisted than average just like I do in modern patterns. It's like magic!
