The Language of the Gloves is another tool of historical flirtation (as the Fan Language I posted few times ago) and was used during the second half of the 19th century... when a lady has something to say to a gentelmen, but don't want to seem like coquette. Or just have lost her fan, why not? Watch and try!

Goodness, no! It's a whispered convention among young people, if it's codified at all it's in fashionable frivolous magazines. In many cases it might be something agreed on between specific people to talk secretly in public places. But tbh it's probably not more true than many a Bravo or Cosmo article, certainly not a universal thing.

the code was not that rigid like the other comments say, it was what women showed instinctively when they felt like wanting to say those. btw i love this kind of content and you did it great 👏😊

Who knew you could communicate so much with just your gloves? Were men aware of the secret glove code? Or was it more useful for women to hint/watch/gossip about each other? I'm so curious.

The weird thing is, in order for this to work, everyone had to know the code so they could communicate with their sweetheart. There's no point flapping your gloves if he doesn't know what you mean. And if everyone knew what you were signalling, there's no point to having a secret code in the first place...
